After a big win by Philly's Block Party over WFTDA Apprentice Hartford Area Roller Derby, Philly Roller Girls Liberty Belles faced the B.ay A.rea D.erby Girls All-Stars. It was a sparkly-helmeted skirmish in University of Pennsylvania's Class of 1923 Arena--but even an impressive late-game rally by the Liberty Belles wasn't enough to stop the Golden Girls taking a convincing 263-152 win.

Now we're cooking. May saw a couple of upsets, but most of what we learned came from the closeness of games that went the right way.

WASHINGTON, DC--On April 27 at the DC Armory, the DC All Stars (WFTDA 42) hosted the Philly Roller Girls (DNN #7, WFTDA 9) Liberty Belles, returning the favor from last season. When these two teams met last August 11 in Philadelphia, the score was Philly 287, DC All-Stars 103.

DUNDALK, MD -- In a private, neutral-ground Sunday morning bout between Boston (DNN #19, WFTDA #21) and Philly (DNN #7, WFTDA #9) following Boston's 214-108 loss to Charm City (DNN #15, WFTDA #12) on Saturday night, Boston found themselves following an increasingly familiar arc.

Last Weekend's Bouts Last weekend saw two long-running local rivalries return for 2013: Sacred City (27 WFTDA) travelled to Angel City (DNN #19, 18 WFTDA), and Montreal (DNN #17, 17 WFTDA) travelled to Boston (DNN #21, 20 WFTDA). Both games went as the rankings expected, but may well provide some early season indications of teams’ fortunes in 2013.

ATLANTA, GA -- Bay Area returned to Championships for the first time since 2010 aiming to survive the first round for the first time, with Philly looking to find the sort of form that guided them to 4th place that same year. While Philly opened the scoring, Bay Area had taken the lead by the end of jam three and never looked in any serious danger of surrendering it.

LINCOLN, NE -- The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association tonight conducted a random draw to determine the bracket for November’s Championship Tournament. Each region’s #1 seed receives a first round bye; the #3 seed from each region will face a #2 from another region and the victor of that match-up proceeds to face a #1 from a third.

BURLINGTON, VT -- Since 2009, the East Region final has always come down to Gotham and Philly. This year's edition was slightly different with the significant addition of Philly's ace jammer V Diva, but in the end the score was relatively similar to last year's final game in Baltimore.
