Now we're cooking. May saw a couple of upsets, but most of what we learned came from the closeness of games that went the right way.

There's a lot more action in the Power Rankings this month as teams start to kick off their seasons in earnest. We’ve got our first ranking debut of the year, and another team returning after a lengthy absence. Want to skip the reasoning and jump straight to rankings? Go on then.

Last Weekend's Bouts Last weekend saw two long-running local rivalries return for 2013: Sacred City (27 WFTDA) travelled to Angel City (DNN #19, 18 WFTDA), and Montreal (DNN #17, 17 WFTDA) travelled to Boston (DNN #21, 20 WFTDA). Both games went as the rankings expected, but may well provide some early season indications of teams’ fortunes in 2013.

ATLANTA, GA -- For the first twenty minutes of the quarterfinal bout between 1W Oly and 2NC Minnesota, it looked as if Minnesota might be able to land a major upset -- but Oly took over in the last minutes of the first half and never relinquished control of the game. Oly's lead was as high as 115 points in the second half, and they took a 218-125 win to advance to the semifinals against Texas.

ATLANTA, GA -- In the second bout of the WFTDA Championships opening round, 2NC Minnesota got revenge for a late-second unsanctioned loss against 3SC Kansas City with a 96 point win, 244-168. Kansas City still had an outside chance with under ten minutes to play, but a late 23-0 followed by a 15-0 for Minnesota put the game far out of reach.

LINCOLN, NE -- The Women’s Flat Track Derby Association tonight conducted a random draw to determine the bracket for November’s Championship Tournament. Each region’s #1 seed receives a first round bye; the #3 seed from each region will face a #2 from another region and the victor of that match-up proceeds to face a #1 from a third.

NIAGARA FALLS, NY -- In a very long-awaited rematch of a 155-155 tie game in June, the North Central's top two seeds, 1NC Windy City and 2NC Minnesota, met in what was also a repeat of the 2011 tournament final. While the score wasn't a tie this time, the game proved to be every bit as evenly matched as it was earlier in the year.

NIAGARA FALLS, NY -- Coming into the semifinals at the North Central Playoffs, it was widely expected that 1NC Windy City would have little trouble with 5NC Ohio but 2NC Minnesota and 3NC Naptown would have a tight one. Reality would not comply, as Minnesota jumped all over Naptown early and squashed the uncharacteristically ineffective Indianapolis crew, 283-86.

BUFFALO, NY -- The fourth edition of the WFTDA Big 5 kicks off this weekend in Niagara Falls, NY as the ten top teams from the WFTDA North Central get it on in a tournament hosted by the East region's Queen City. See WFTDA's official tournament bracket here.
