Now we're cooking. May saw a couple of upsets, but most of what we learned came from the closeness of games that went the right way.

There's a lot more action in the Power Rankings this month as teams start to kick off their seasons in earnest. We’ve got our first ranking debut of the year, and another team returning after a lengthy absence. Want to skip the reasoning and jump straight to rankings? Go on then.

NIAGARA FALLS, NY -- 4 seed Arch Rival came into the North Central Playoffs with high hopes of advancing to Championships, but a disappointing 1-3 run ended with a big 217-119 loss to the tournament's bottom seed Madison in the 7th place game. A 96-4 run in the second half for Madison sank Arch Rival's hopes of equalizing their weekend record.

NIAGARA FALLS, NY -- 6NC Detroit continued showing off a stout, punishing defense in the final game of Saturday action at the North Central playoffs, hammering a game but overmatched 10NC Madison crew to a final score of 204-116.

BUFFALO, NY -- The fourth edition of the WFTDA Big 5 kicks off this weekend in Niagara Falls, NY as the ten top teams from the WFTDA North Central get it on in a tournament hosted by the East region's Queen City. See WFTDA's official tournament bracket here.

MADISON, WI -- With the North Central rankings in disarray, Milwaukee’s Brewcity Bruisers came into Madison last Saturday night with high hopes of erasing a winless record against their in-state rivals. It was not to be. Despite Brewcity playing the cleaner game, all the big power jam points went Madison’s way for the 158-130 final.

MADISON, WI -- In a rematch of their meeting at last October’s North Central playoffs, the Ohio Roller Girls proved their upset of Madison was no fluke, downing the Dairyland Dolls on the road in Madison, 154-128.  

With the second quarter WFTDA rankings period closing at the end of the month, June's bouts represent the final chances for teams to solidify their seeding for the September and October regional tournaments -- or claim an invite by breaking into their region's top ten.

MADISON, WI -- Houston (#22 DNN, #5SC WFTDA) kicked off a three-bout tour of the Midwest with a closed-bout Friday evening victory against Madison (#10NC WFTDA), pulling ahead in the second half to win 176-127.

BALLWIN, MO -- In front of 650 Saturday night at Midwest Sport Hockey, two North Central top tens provided a glimpse of how competitive play will be within their region in 2012. Bouncing back from two deficits, NC #6 Arch Rival (unofficially ranked #22 in the nation by DNN) used a 24-0 late-bout rally to milk a 131-121 win over NC #10 Madison in WFTDA-sanctioned play.
