Detroit Derby Girls

Now we're cooking. May saw a couple of upsets, but most of what we learned came from the closeness of games that went the right way.

Steel City's Steel Hurtin' ventured to Detroit on Saturday, and in a wild finish, the Detroit Derby Girls came from behind in the game's final jam to take a 158-157 victory.

Last Weekend's Bouts Last weekend saw two long-running local rivalries return for 2013: Sacred City (27 WFTDA) travelled to Angel City (DNN #19, 18 WFTDA), and Montreal (DNN #17, 17 WFTDA) travelled to Boston (DNN #21, 20 WFTDA). Both games went as the rankings expected, but may well provide some early season indications of teams’ fortunes in 2013.

DETROIT, MI -- In a battle within the North Central’s top five, it was the Detroit Derby Girls (#18 DNN) who showed they were still contenders within the region as they defeated the visiting Ohio Roller Girls (#24 DNN) 159-129 on Saturday night. Both teams looked primed and ready to kick off their 2013 seasons even before the 2012 Championships, Grits and Glory, have been played.

NIAGARA FALLS, NY -- Coming into the first quarterfinal game at the North Central Playoffs, 3 seed Naptown and 6 seed Detroit looked like potentially very well matched teams given recent identically-sized 3 point wins over Kansas City.

BUFFALO, NY -- The fourth edition of the WFTDA Big 5 kicks off this weekend in Niagara Falls, NY as the ten top teams from the WFTDA North Central get it on in a tournament hosted by the East region's Queen City. See WFTDA's official tournament bracket here.

MILWAUKEE, WI -- A messy start for the Brewcity Bruisers (6NC WFTDA) gave the Detroit Derby Girls all the margin they needed to win a game marred by 20 total jammer penalty minutes.  The bout was so penalty plagued that ten of the bout’s 38 jams went the full two minutes.
