Angel City Derby Girls

Now we're cooking. May saw a couple of upsets, but most of what we learned came from the closeness of games that went the right way.

LOS ANGELES, CA--The Rose City Rollers took on Angel City Derby Girls in a Sunday midday hangover game, having played the Los Angeles Derby Dolls on the banked track the night prior. The two teams entered having finished their 2012 Western Regionals match-up at 194-147, in Rose's favor – a closer-than-expected finish at the time.

The round-robin Tinseltown Showdown, held in Los Angeles April 5-7, saw six bouts over three days, including a last-jam nailbiter between Houston and Tampa. The tournament brought together teams from across the country that seemed closely matched during the planning stages, but there were more big wins than close games.

Last Weekend After a few hectic weekends of WFTDA action, the last weekend in March provided some respite. Montreal’s visit to--and near upset of--Windy City was the weekend’s biggest bout, but it looks unlikely to have a major impact on the rankings.

Last Weekend's Bouts Last weekend saw two long-running local rivalries return for 2013: Sacred City (27 WFTDA) travelled to Angel City (DNN #19, 18 WFTDA), and Montreal (DNN #17, 17 WFTDA) travelled to Boston (DNN #21, 20 WFTDA). Both games went as the rankings expected, but may well provide some early season indications of teams’ fortunes in 2013.

LOS ANGELES, CA--Sacred City’s Sacrificers played Angel City’s Hollywood Scarlets on Angel City’s home track for the first time since 2010 this past Saturday. Angel managed to shrug off both their heart-rending last jam loss at regionals and a 1-6 record against their local rivals to go 4-0 in sanctioned play so far in 2013 with a 243-139 win.

RICHMOND, CA -- Angel City and Sacred City have a storied rivalry going back to 2007, with almost every single meeting between the teams coming down to the last few jams. In the seventh place of the West playoffs, it came down to literally the last few seconds.

RICHMOND, CA -- In a Saturday consolation bout at the WFTDA West Region playoffs, lead changes near the start of the game suggested Angel City might keep Rocky from making Sunday's fifth-place playoff, but a 48-0 run for RMRG at the end of the first half put paid to any hopes the Scarlets might have had of an upset.

RICHMOND, CA -- In the second quarterfinal game of the WFTDA West Region Playoffs -- and the second game of the day for 8th seeded Angel City, who had barely gotten past 9W Wasatch in the tournament opener -- top seed Rose City was widely expected to crush ACDG, but the ladies from Los Angeles refused to stick to the script.
