Derby News Network Power Rankings - June 2012

For more background on the methodology and reasoning behind our Power Rankings, please see this month's intro article and the original DNN Power Rankings FAQ.

DNN WFTDA W/L Next Notes
1 Gotham

1 E 2012 2-0
2011 14-0
6/9 @ Philly After warmups against Long Island and Connecticut, June will finally see Gotham get some top-level competition as they take on Philly (June 9), Denver (June 23) and Rose City (June 24).
2 Rose City
(+3)
3 W 2012 4-0
2011 9-6
6/23 @ Steel City The Portland crew rises to their highest-ever ranking by winning tough games over Denver (151-115) and Texas (149-117) on consecutive weekends. They'll play Steel City and Gotham at ECDX.
3 Denver
(-1)
4 W 2012 3-1
2011 13-3
6/3 vs Kansas City Last month's #2 team gets knocked down a peg after losing a head to head match with Rose City, but their subsequent 169-145 defeat of cross-town rivals Rocky Mountain eased the sting of that a bit. Denver continues to be plagued by cold streaks, though, as RMRG had a 66-3 run to close that game; they'll certainly need to get that under control if they hope to topple Gotham come ECDX.
4 Windy City
(+2)
1 NC 2012 2-1
2011 16-3
6/3 @ Charm City Windy City's last-jam 3-point loss to Rose City in April is looking better and better with Rose's subsequent wins over Denver and Texas. Windy's historical success against Texas, combined with Denver's impressive defeats of Bay Area and Rocky Mountain, leave WCR threading the needle to land between the two of them at #4.
5 Texas
(-2)
1 SC 2012 4-1
2011 14-9
6/22 @ Montreal It's a slight drop for Texas after losing by 32 to Rose City, but they still look to be near the top of their game. June finds them up against a fairly wide mix of competition -- Arch Rival (June 9), Montreal (June 22) and Philly (June 23).
6 Bay Area
(-2)
6 W 2012 1-1
2011 14-5
6/23 @ Rat City April's trip to Denver, where they got blown out by Denver but defeated Rocky Mountain, still stands as BAD's only data point of the year. We'll get a little more information when they take on Rat City on June 23.
2 W 2012 4-2
2011 9-3
6/2 vs Kansas City RMRG rises a few spots after a decent showing against Denver, though the 169-145 final score was a bit closer than it looked as Rocky was down by 87 points late in the second half. Following RMRG's loss to Bay Area and their very narrow win over Arizona, it's clear the ground has shifted this year in the West after almost three full years of RMRG / Oly dominance.
8 Arizona
(+2)
10 W 2012 4-1
2011 4-7
6/23 @ Boston Arizona's only action of May was an 80 point win over Emerald City, but they stay right behind Rocky Mountain for the moment based on their 11-point loss to RMRG in April. Arizona will travel to ECDX this month, where they'll face Boston and Steel City.
9 Kansas City
(-2)
2 SC 2012 3-0
2011 12-4
6/2 @ Rocky Mountain No action in May, and KCRW slips a bit as Rocky Mountain passes them. They'll very quickly get the chance to challenge that assumption -- they're in Denver this weekend, where they will play both Denver and Rocky Mountain.
10 Rat City
(-2)
5 W 2012 0-0
2011 11-9
6/2 @ Tampa Pretty much a complete mystery at the moment, as they haven't been seen in sanctioned action since late September. They're definitely out to fix that this month, though, playing on four weekends in a row. Games against Tampa (June 2), Terminal City (June 9), Angel City (June 17) and most importantly Bay Area (June 23) should dial in their current strength quite effectively.
11 Philly

2 E 2012 2-0
2011 12-9
6/9 vs Gotham Philly got their 2012 action underway with triple-digit wins over Montreal and Nashville; based on that, they don't appear to have lost much of a step from 2011. But their June schedule is pretty harrowing, with Gotham (June 9), Texas (June 23) and Denver (June 24) all on the docket.
12 Oly

1 W 2012 1-0
2011 14-1
6/3 vs Tampa Oly continues to not provide many clues as to what they might be like this year, though they'll finally get some action this month as they play Tampa, Naptown, Dockyard and newly-minted WFTDA league Sac City. They'll definitely be without the services of satellite superstar DeRanged for the first three of those bouts, as she was recently hit with a three-game suspension for "intentionally contacting an official" back at November's WFTDA championship tournament.
13 Minnesota

2 NC 2012 5-0
2011 11-4
6/2 @ Charm City The North Central's #2 team has built up an undefeated 5-0 record thus far this year, but had a pretty tough battle with Naptown before emerging victorious by 35. They seem to have scheduled their season very effectively, though, with steadily increasing levels of challenge every month -- in June, they take on Charm City and Detroit on June 2 and 3 (both of whom they narrowly bested last year) and Windy City (who narrowly bested them last year) on June 16.
14 Charm City

3 E 2012 3-0
2011 9-8
6/2 @ Minnesota This year, Charm City has put up 3 triple digit victories in a row over Queen City, Chicago Outfit and Nashville, but hasn't yet faced a team who has given them trouble in the past. That changes this weekend when they take on Windy City and Minnesota at Midwest Brewhaha; they get slightly lighter competition at ECDX when they battle Montreal and Boston. The loss of a variety of superstars from the 2011 season hasn't been reflected on the scoreboard yet, but June's games could highlight their absence -- or demonstrate that Charm City has shaken off their losses.
15 Naptown

3 NC 2012 6-2
2011 14-4
6/10 @ Atlanta With the exception of a larger-than-expected loss to Windy City in March, and a closer-than-expected win over Tampa in April, Naptown has been playing almost exactly to expectations thus far in their 5-2 season and stand pat at #15. This month they take on Oly and Jet City on June 23.
16 London
(+2)
5 E 2012 2-0
2011 4-6
7/14 @ Bear City It's a minor jump for London, based more on a minor slip for Steel City than London's record-setting merciless destruction of Auld Reekie, where London won 667-18. London plays Bear City (Berlin) in June, but we're unlikely to see Europe's best get any real competition until the East playoffs.
17 Detroit
(-1)
4 NC 2012 0-0
2011 8-13
6/2 @ Arch Rival Like Rat City, Detroit has been very quiet for a very long time -- their last sanctioned game was on October 9, 2011, where they lost the third-place game of the North Central playoffs to Naptown by just 11 points. Their quest for the Championships begins anew this weekend at Brewhaha when they play Arch Rival, Brewcity and Minnesota.
18 Steel City
(-1)
4 E 2012 4-1
2011 11-7
6/9 @ Montreal The Pittsburgh crew had a surprisingly close game against Dutchland; though they were missing key players from their roster, Steel City's 6 point win was much closer than seemed possible going into the game. Steel City slides a bit on that result, but will get a chance to bounce back against Montreal on June 9; they have extremely stiff competition at ECDX when they play Rose City and Arizona.
19 Montreal

6 E 2012 6-4
2011 17-7
6/9 vs Steel City Although they've been as active as ever and have played 10 games so far this year, Montreal has been turned back in all of their 4 games against Championships-level team -- Philly gave them the most solid denial, beating them by 145 in May. June 9's bout against Steel City will be the newest edition of what's become one of the East region's signature rivalries; they also get Texas and Charm City at ECDX.
20 Boston

7 E 2012 2-1
2011 7-10
6/16 vs Maine The Massacre had to fight hard to collect their first two wins of the year in May, holding off Dutchland by 19 and fully capitalizing on Carolina mistakes to win by 9. They've got a busy June lined up that looks like it will start easier and end much harder - they play Maine and Providence on June 16 and 17, then get Arizona and Charm City at ECDX.
21 Carolina

8 E 2012 6-2
2011 17-3
6/9 @ Chicago Outfit Carolina began May ranked right behind Boston and justified that ranking when they lost to Boston by single digits. Their 6-2 record looks solid on paper, but 4 of those wins came against teams that didn't make the playoffs last year. They'll travel out of region to try on the Chicago Outfit on June 9.
22 Dutchland

9 E 2012 3-3
2011 9-4
7/22 @ Detroit Lancaster, PA's Dutchland had a harrowing start to their season when Naptown whomped them by 208 points, but Dutchland bounced back with two quality losses in May, losing by 6 to Steel City and by 19 to Boston. Those results are good enough to get Dutchland back in the top 25 for the first time since August 2011, though they won't be in action again until late July.
23 Tampa

6 SC 2012 5-3
2011 6-9
6/2 @ Rat City Tampa just missed the cut after April's action due to a 7 point loss to Cincinnati, but their May results (beating Madison by 55 and slamming Atlanta by 128), added to a defeat of Nashville and a close game against Naptown in April, make Tampa / Cincy look like the outlier. Though #25 Houston beat Tampa quite badly in late March, the totality of results since then suggest that a rematch would be a much different game. This weekend, Tampa takes on Jet City, Rat City and Oly in a Pacific Northwest swing.
24 Ohio
(-2)
7 NC 2012 13-1
2011 13-8
6/2 @ Grand Raggidy The Columbus team keeps stubbornly hanging on to their position in a tightly-matched North Central clump of teams -- but, like Carolina, their 13-1 record has been built mostly against sub-playoff teams (10 of their 13 victims missed 2011's playoffs). However, a June 1 win over Madison gives them some momentum going into this weekend's Brewhaha, where they continue against Grand Raggidy and Brewcity.
25 Houston
(-2)
4 SC 2012 6-3
2011 14-9
6/9 vs Arch Rival Houston opened the year strong with a 6-0 record but has hit the wall against Championships-level teams in their last three games, losing by 139 to Windy City, 53 to Texas and 230 to Rose City. They get a chance to dial back the challenge level this month a bit when they play Arch Rival (June 9) and Northwest Arkansas (June 23).

And then there was Brewhahahahahahaha....

Well your Detroit theory just got blown. Great job Arch Rival!

Detroit

Have to wonder if Detroit having no sanctioned bouts since October was a bad decision. ARRG has been playing an aggressive schedule against out of town teams and frequently works with the GateKeepers. Detroit has great talent but just didn't look as polished in that game. I'm looking forward to watching both teams the rest of this weekend.

Also looks like Detroit was

Also looks like Detroit was Vet light. Besides Cookie and Racer and a couple others...mostly new names on that charter.

WHAT??? THIS AND MY ABSENCE

WHAT??? THIS AND MY ABSENCE AT BREWHAHA ARE OF EQUIVALENT OUTRAGE I TELL YOU!!!

gg arrg

Detroit has a lot of Travel Team rookies this year. The rooks played very well this game especially Ally and Feta! Given some time to gel as a team and get everyone on the same page this team is gonna be BEASTY. This was Detroit's first game of 2012. Oh, and stay out of the damn box women!!!!

Naptown

Also plays Rat City on the 24th during our trip to Washington. SUPER stoked to play them!! :)

Brewhaha

Looks like Brewhaha is really messing up your rankings. I'm sure with the mass of top bouts this month you were expecting some more misses, but who thought there'd be so many by the first weekend? Sure does keep derby exciting!

I couldn't agree more

Looks like this weekend was full of ranking shake ups world wide! Can't wait to see what ECDX brings and really looking forward to the MNRG and Windy rematch later this month!

Tally

DNN fared better on Day 2. By my tally from Brewhaha, DNN went 5-4.

Hits (UR = unranked):

22 over UR (Ohio over Grand Raggidy)
16 over UR (Detroit over Brewcity)
13 over 16 (Minnesota over Detroit)
24 over UR (Chicago Outfit over Burning River)
22 over UR (Ohio over Brewcity)

Misses:

UR over 16 (Arch Rival over Detroit)
UR over 24 (Cincinnati over Chicago Outfit)
14 over 13 (Charm over Minnesota)
14 over 6 (Charm over Windy)

I figure best guess is Windy will drop down to join Charm and Minnesota, and the three of them will be grouped together based off the results of this weekend plus the upcoming Minnesota-Windy bout.

Hell if I know what DNN is going to do with the rest of those results. Good luck!

Any other rankings out there?

Brewhaha seems to have caused troubles for everyone’s predictions. Unless I’ve miscounted, I see DNN went 5-4, FTS went 12-4, Derbytron went 9-5 and WFTDA went 7-5 for Brewhaha.

EDIT: Oh... I just noticed that the rankings listed withing the scores are based off of May's rankings, not June's. So my analysis of DNN's results is off.

Predictions...

Wftda rankings aren't predictors of the future, but of teams' performance through the past quarter. Tracking misses and hits doesn't accomplish much, especially considering there isn't regional crossover included in rankings, #1 in the nc isn't necessarily better than #2 in the west.

Or number 3 in the East? ;-)

Or number 3 in the East? ;-)

True

True that they aren't supposed to be predictions. I was just comparing ranking methods to each other.

And I wasn't counting bouts across regions for the wftda numbers. I only used NC vs NC bouts. So it didn't count the Charm bouts, for example.

Define Rankings vs Predictions

I think derby needs to get away from the idea that rankings are predictions. I guess it got that way because not all teams played all the other teams. But in baseball, we don't say that the standings are bunk if the Cardinals beat the 1st place Reds, for example.

For all practical purposes, Detroit should have always been ranked or had standings ahead of Arch Rival. ARRG had never beat Detroit nor beat anyone who beat Detroit within any kind of window. Now they have, so that of course changes things. And based on this weekend's results, WCR could also find themselves #2 in the NC for the first time in a long time!

Other sports

Other sports like baseball, basketball, football, etc., have defined seasons and regions where each team plays every other team, or a large portion of them. The standings are based purely on wins, not on who beat who, in large part because the teams are relatively similar in power/strength besides a few outliers. The way derby seasons are scheduled that sort of thing would be impossible.

Magic Money Fairy

Until the magic money fairy comes and funds everybody's travel, we're all stuck with the current situation.

Why I sleep with my stank, busted-up gear under my pillow

I am hoping for a visit from the magic money fairy.

Columbia?

What happened to Columbia?

Dude

Dude,
Columbia fell off the ranking in April.

Wasatch?

Hurry up already with the new rankings! Wasatch is on a roll, and want to see if they;ve pushed their way into the power rankings.

Sad to say ...

From the intro article of this ranking:

Derby News Network wrote:

Wasatch. Their out-of-nowhere defeat of Angel City in May instantly transformed them into a playoff contender in the West, but their remaining scheduled games this season -- Silicon Valley, Santa Cruz, Choice City and FoCo -- aren't against the caliber of opponents that could lift them to top 25 just yet.

Happy to say!

Wasatch stomped 12W Silicon 261-70, a much higher spread than the predicted outcome, same with Santa Cruz. As for Choice and Foco that is misinformation, Wasatch's B-team is scheduled to play. Unfortunately being a previously unknown team with few competitive leagues near enough to schedule hangover bouts it is extremely challenging to get a team willing to travel to Salt Lake City. It is also near impossible to get games with top ten teams or higher ranked teams when no one has yet heard of you, or when the opposing team has little to gain playing and up-and-coming league. But doesn't crushing teams right out of that top ten spot as well as beating Angel City say something? Wasatch is most definitely a playoff contender and a force to be reckoned with, possibly even a Top 25 contender. Things change Southbay, WRD is a ranking breaker just you watch ;)
