Derby News Network Power Rankings - January 2012

For more background on the methodology and reasoning behind our Power Rankings, please see this month's intro article and the original DNN Power Rankings FAQ.

DNN WFTDA W/L Next Notes
1 Gotham

1 E 2012 0-0
2011 14-0
3/3 @ L.A. Derby Dolls Now the only WFTDA team to put up two undefeated seasons (2008 and 2011) and the only team to win the Hydra twice, the 2012 challenges left for Gotham will be attempts to break the consecutive-wins record (currently 22; Gotham has won their last 14 flat-track games) and to become the first team to win back to back WFTDA titles.
2 Oly

1 W 2012 0-0
2011 14-1
3/18 vs Jet City Although Gotham put paid to Oly's hopes for their own undefeated season in Denver, the team from Olympia can take some comfort in the fact they've made it to the WFTDA championship game in each of the three years they've been eligible.
2 W 2012 0-0
2011 9-3
TBD Rocky Mountain arguably gave Gotham a tougher run for their money than Oly did at Championships, but Oly's head-to-head win at Westerns keeps RMRG at #3. 2012 may very well be a rebuilding year for the Fight Club, with a fair amount of their key players retiring or departing for new challenges.
4 Texas

1 SC 2012 0-0
2011 14-9
1/28 @ [TBA] There may be no team in the sport more resilient than Texas, at it for a full decade now and the only team to have been a credible threat to reach the championship game every year since 2006. They rise to their highest slot since May 2010 with a third-place finish in 2011's very competitive WFTDA championship tournament.
2 SC 2012 0-0
2011 12-4
4/6 @ No Coast Kansas City had a crowd-pleasing run of thrillers at the 2011 Championships but couldn't topple regional rivals Texas in the third-place game. Like Rocky Mountain, though, Kansas City is set to lose some key members in 2012 -- notably Kelley Young, Eclipse and Hall Balls -- and may find the going tougher this year.
6 Rose City

3 W 2012 0-0
2011 9-6
5/12 vs Denver It just wasn't Rose City's time yet at Championships, but their first-round battle with Kansas City went right down to the wire and could have easily gone either way. The Portland team doesn't look like they're done improving yet, though, and is a serious threat to finally break Oly and RMRG's three-year lock on the top of the West this year.
7 Rat City

4 W 2012 0-0
2011 11-9
6/16 @ L.A. Derby Dolls No WFTDA action or movement since Regionals.
8 Denver

5 W 2012 0-0
2011 13-3
5/12 @ Rose City No WFTDA action or movement since Regionals.
9 Bay Area

6 W 2012 0-0
2011 14-5
TBD No WFTDA action or movement since Regionals.
10 Windy City

1 NC 2012 0-0
2011 16-3
3/31 vs Naptown For the third year in a row, Chicago's WCR picked up a Championships bye by winning their North Central region but ended up one-and-done at Championships. Though they came close to getting past eventual 4th-place finisher (and DNN #5) Kansas City, they remain stuck behind Bay Area based on BAD's solid 116-49 handling of WCR in August.
11 Philly

2 E 2012 0-0
2011 12-9
7/7 @ Charm City Philly's up-and-down 2011 finally ended in rather similar fashion to 2010, as they were defeated by Oly at Championships - though Philly finished short of 4th place this time.
12 Minnesota

2 NC 2012 0-0
2011 11-4
2/4 vs Old Capitol City MNRG reaches their highest-ever perch in the Power Rankings after dealing Charm City a minor upset at Championships and nearly taking out Texas as well.
13 Charm City

3 E 2012 0-0
2011 9-8
4/14 vs Chicago Outfit Charm City posted an epic second-half comeback against Minnesota at Championships but then saw it all unravel behind a nonstop series of penalties; they ended up one-and-done and drop one spot to Minnesota.
14 Naptown

3 NC 2012 0-0
2011 14-4
1/21 vs Pickup Teams Naptown couldn't continue their strong run at NC regionals upon arriving at the WFTDA championships and was summarily dismissed by Philly in a first-round blowout. They did thump Toronto 266-67 in an expected blowout in December.
15 Detroit

4 NC 2012 0-0
2011 8-13
3/25 vs Chicago Outfit No WFTDA action or movement since Regionals.
16 Steel City

4 E 2012 0-0
2011 11-7
3/17 vs Bleeding Heartland No WFTDA action or movement since Regionals.
17 London

5 E 2012 0-0
2011 4-6
TBD Crushed a badly overmatched visiting Sioux City in November, 307-19, but stay in their post-Regionals rank.
18 Montreal

6 E 2012 0-0
2011 17-7
3/3 @ Minnesota No WFTDA action or movement since Regionals.
19 Nashville

3 SC 2012 0-0
2011 7-6
3/24 vs Atlanta Nashville has had no luck in the random drawing for seeding at Championships, getting a first-round game against the previous year's champions in both 2010 and 2011. As expected, Nashville was soundly defeated (this time by Rocky Mountain), but put up a stronger fight than they had in 2010. With Kansas City losing some of their key members this year, Nashville will likely be hoping to make a play for #2 in their region by the time tournament season rolls around again.
20 Boston

7 E 2012 0-0
2011 7-10
4/28 vs Naptown No WFTDA action or movement since Regionals.
21 Carolina

8 E 2012 0-0
2011 17-3
2/18 vs Columbia Crushed Cape Fear in a post-Regionals bout 210-55, but faces the reported retirement of a major player in Holly Wanna Crackya in 2012. No movement since Regionals.
5 NC 2012 0-0
2011 12-6
3/24 @ Grand Raggidy No WFTDA action or movement since Regionals.
23 Arch Rival

6 NC 2012 0-0
2011 10-6
3/3 vs Madison No WFTDA action or movement since Regionals.
24 Brewcity

7 NC 2012 0-0
2011 6-9
3/31 @ Minnesota No WFTDA action or movement since Regionals.
25 Cincinnati

8 NC 2012 0-0
2011 5-12
2/18 @ Grand Raggidy No WFTDA action or movement since Regionals.
Key:
E WFTDA East region
W WFTDA West region
NC WFTDA North Central region
SC WFTDA South Central region

WHAT??? IT'S AN OUTRAGE I

WHAT??? IT'S AN OUTRAGE I TELL YOU!!!

Methinks the 7-10 Western

Methinks the 7-10 Western teams need to get out and play some 7-10 E and NC teams. You get past 6 W and the West disappears.

Underdogs...again

The KC Roller Warriors seem to go into every Championships as the underdog but once again, they "surprised" everyone. Despite a depleted, sick and injured jammer rotation, they took a very respectable 4th place in spite of being forced to jam 3 blockers in their final 2 games, nearly beating Oly to play in the final game with Gotham.

A huge congratulations to KCRW for a great 2011 and I look forward to your 2012 season!

Sioux Falls vs. London

I believe that it was Sioux Falls, and not Sioux City that made the London trip! You can read all about it because Sioux Falls is the WFTDA featured league for this month!

TEXAS IS THE REASON!!!! NOW SEE WHY......
