Derby News Network Power Rankings - August 2010
| DNN | WFTDA | W/L | Next | Notes | ||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
|
1 W | 2010 9-0 2009 12-0 |
TBD | Now at an unprecedented 20-0 in WFTDA sanctioned bouts, Oly will be keeping a low profile until Western Regionals start on October 1. | ||||
|
1 E | 2010 4-0 2009 7-2 |
8/13 @ Bay Area | Gotham trucked over Madison in a hangover bout in July, but gets a more comprehensive test at the Hometown Throwdown event this month where they'll face #6 Rose City, #7 Rat City and #14 Bay Area. | ||||
|
|
2 W | 2010 7-1 2009 8-7 |
8/21 @ Windy City | No action in July for the RMRG crew, but they'll travel out to #10 Windy City this month to try and take down the queens of the North Central. | ||||
|
2 E | 2010 7-3 2009 9-2 |
8/14 @ Arch Rivals | Performed pretty much as expected with a 98-point drubbing of #16 Steel City in July; they take on Detroit, Kansas City and Arch Rival in this month's ARRGageddon round-robin. | ||||
|
3 W | 2010 6-1 2009 12-3 |
8/21 vs Madison | #8 Charm City gave them a first-half scare, but Denver exploded in the second half to handily win 208-101. Madison comes calling this month. | ||||
|
|
4 W | 2010 6-2 2009 5-3 |
8/13 @ Rat City | No action in July, but they have a huge weekend coming up this month as they face #2 Gotham, #7 Rat City and #14 Bay Area at the Hometown Throwdown. | ||||
|
5 W | 2010 5-3 2009 5-7 |
8/13 @ Rose City | Rat City is pretty much in the same boat as Rose City right now as they prepare for the Hometown Throwdown. Rose narrowly defeated Rat City head to head earlier this year; RCRG would love to get a win over their nearby rival heading into Western Regionals. | ||||
|
|
4 E | 2010 4-6 2009 13-5 |
8/21 vs Boston | Played #5 Denver very close for a half before their recurrent penalty problems allowed Denver to run away with the second half. This month, CCRG gets a grudge match against Boston, the team that stopped them one game short of Nationals in 2009. | ||||
|
1 SC | 2010 3-5 2009 11-2 |
8/22 vs Dallas | No action or movement for Texas in July, and they have no action scheduled for August. | ||||
|
1 NC | 2010 3-2 2009 10-2 |
8/21 vs Rocky Mountain | One of the few teams to move this month, Windy City swaps spots with #11 Boston after hanging on for a 121-115 squeaker of a win. | ||||
|
3 E | 2010 4-6 2009 10-9 |
8/21 @ Charm City | Boston's been a little hard to figure recently - in June, they played a very strong first half against #6 Rose City and very weak second, and in July they did the exact opposite against #10 Windy City. Boston slips a spot on the loss to WCR. | ||||
|
2 NC | 2010 7-1 2009 8-6 |
8/14 @ Arch Rivals | No action in July but they'll have a shot at old rival Philly at ARRGageddon, along with Kansas City and Arch Rival. | ||||
|
3 NC | 2010 1-6 2009 7-4 |
8/21 @ Denver | Dropped a narrow one to #11 Boston, got thumped by #2 Gotham and delivered a 100 point drubbing on Houston in July. Their upcoming matchup with Denver should provide a good warmup for NC regionals. | ||||
|
6 W | 2010 8-3 2009 5-5 |
8/13 @ Gotham | Bay Area took July off after a very busy June. How they do this month in the Hometown Throwdown against Gotham, Rat City and Rose City will go a long way towards showing whether they are a threat for one of the top 3 slots in the very tough Western Region. | ||||
|
- | 2010 10-1 2009 8-3 |
8/21 @ Angel City | The sole non-WFTDA team in the top 25 has been quiet since early June, and we won't see them in action again until they visit Charm City in September. | ||||
|
5 E | 2010 7-3 2009 11-3 |
8/14 @ Brewcity | Took an expected big loss to #4 Philly in July, but their matchup with #22 Brewcity should be one to watch this month. | ||||
|
- | 2010 2-2 2009 5-0 |
TBD | The girls from across the pond continue to hang out in the middle of the pack, with no new interleague data since their late-spring stateside swing. | ||||
|
3 SC | 2010 3-2 2009 9-4 |
8/14 @ Philly | KCR-Dub faces #12 Detroit at ARRGageddon in a bout that has the potential to lift them up the rankings heading into South Central regionals; they also get #4 Philly and Arch Rival. | ||||
|
4 NC | 2010 9-1 2009 10-5 |
8/22 @ Kansas City | Cincy is 8-0 in sanctioned bouts this year, with their only stumble coming against non-WFTDA San Diego. They have arguably the toughest bouts of their year coming up late this month though: #18 Kansas City and #14 Bay Area. | ||||
|
2 SC | 2010 10-3 2009 8-8 |
8/28 vs Carolina | ATL continues to have a very successful year with a big win over new #23 Providence, but they'll be taking it fairly light until South Central regionals with only one more bout on their schedule. | ||||
|
6 E | 2010 11-3 2009 5-6 |
10/2 @ San Diego | Montreal takes a well-earned summer break after a hectic 2010 schedule that had them play 7 Eastern Region teams. They'll stay in hibernation until facing #11 Boston in the first round of Eastern Regionals. | ||||
|
5 NC | 2010 7-2 2009 6-4 |
8/14 vs Steel City | Brewcity takes the biggest jump of the period by putting a 148-68 smackdown on previous #23 North Star. A bout this month with #16 Steel City ought to show if that surprising outcome was an outlier. | ||||
|
8 E | 2010 2-7 2009 6-4 |
8/14 vs DC | Providence returns to the top 25 for the first time in almost exactly a year by thumping previous #24 Nashville 182-116. | ||||
|
7 W | 2010 5-2 2009 5-1 |
TBD | After hovering on the edges for awhile, Jet City finally breaks into the top 25 -- ironically enough, the same month they suffer their biggest loss to date (225-83 to Oly). They come in with the help of Tampa's defeat of Dallas in July. | ||||
|
6 SC | 2010 5-10 2009 7-5 |
11/6 @ [TBA] | Tampa Bay debuts at the bottom slot by taking a narrow 104-101 win over previous #22 Dallas at the Rocket City Rumble. | ||||

Madison and DRD
"The Mile High girls go to Madison this month."
actually, they come see us :)
And we'll have some good sibling rivalry going on: DRD's Alaine "Deadly Long Legs" Olthafer is sisters with DD's Darling Nikki and Goldie Mean.
p.s. hurray Jet City!!!
Fixed. Thanks!
Fixed. Thanks!
It's an outrage?
Congrats to Jet City!!
I can't wait to see all the action that's scheduled to take place between now & the Regional Playoff Tournaments... Things are getting exciting!
I think the 16-25th spots will solidly be in flux for awhile.
Just as a reminder...MNRG just beat both #23 and #25 at the ECE. I suspect the more recent loss to Dallas - who just dropped - may have had something to do with the lack of mention. But then, MNRG occasionally seems to be tied to the position of NSRG (dating back, perhaps, from the Brawl of America?), whose BCB loss dropped them as well. Of course, NSRG is about to play Arch - also of note - in August.
Wow, is that messy.
It's fascinating, really. 25 is just a small enough number that the up-and-comers and older teams working their way back up the ladder seem to flit in and out of these standings. Not that you should start doing the top 40 or something, but man...the calls on 'who would win today' at the bottom of the ladder get trickier and trickier.
I'd be curious to see how many hits and misses you get down at the bottom of the rankings as opposed to the top.
Good luck with your estimations next month as we head into the final weeks before the Big 5.

Top 40
With the current regional tournaments set to 10 teams per region & 4 total regions, it would appear to be a challange but well worth creating a "top 40" list.
I am surprised to see MN off the list this month....'
Overall, Excellent job DNN!!!
Oh, we haven't been on since April, Rev.
MNRG beat Pikes Peak, Tampa, and Providence in May and June (although neither of our ECE bouts ever made it onto the written recaps), then lost to Dallas in a come-from-behind and smoked Assassination City last week. We've also never lost to Brew City.
But hey, like I have said, it's triangulation. It's difficult to decide who beats who at any given time. Hopefully after our bouts against Sacred City and B.A.D. in three weeks we'll have enough coins to get the power up and be back in the top 25.
Never lost to Brewcity but...
Dear MNRG,
Beating Tampa, and yet losing to Dallas really makes things more difficult for DNN and all of us who continue to make sense of the Power Rankings. So MNRG, please consider that next time this situation comes up and take care of business.
Thank you.
Your pal,
Piggy Smalls :@)
-----------------------
Also... The last time MNRG played Brewcity was at ECE in 2009 and Brewcity since then has become a well oiled derby machine. Their team continues to only get better and they deserve their WFTDA ranking and their DNN one.
*This is not knocking MNRG at all. I'm just pointing out that Brewcity has really become a power house of a team.
Enough
I have stopped myself from commenting on this for a while, but enough is enough."This is not knocking MNRG at all," you say. I feel like the whole way you worded your "letter" is completely condescending. The matter of fact is that we did beat Tampa and even higher ranked than Tampa is Providence, who we beat the following day. We also beat Pikes Peak, who gets a nice shout out (all of this was recent). I'm not even commenting on your league's ranking, I'm commenting on MNRG's, becuase I wouldn't do that, I RESPECT your skaters.
I think sometimes people sitting behind their desks forget how hard we all work to play and win these games. It's a math and chess game to you. But there are skaters who care and work their asses off to win games.
It gets frustrating to win and return to this list and be disappointed. So when you're writing your "letter," think about that. People break bones, play hurt, and dedicate insane amounts of their time to this sport. Please think of that when you're "taking care of business."
Sincerely,
Diamond Rough

Diamond... Not so rough please.
I disclosed it was not about MNRG because it was in no way actually about MNRG and that should have seperated the topic of Brewcity. Had I thought there was a need to disclose and then go into a paragraph about how well MNRG is doing to avoid what I thought my discloser was meant to cover, I would have.
As far as my "letter" to MNRG, it was very much a statement that MNRG should have won against Dallas. I said it as a friend of many of your all-star teammates and not as anyone who is affliated with North Star or some smoe who doesn't have a clue.
Yeah, it is hard to go out, kick some ass and come back to see you haven't budged. But that's what WFTDA's rankings are for. I assure you that MNRG is the 2nd team I search for on both WFTDA and DNN's rankings as well as Derbytron. Not because of the cross town rivalry thing, but because I sincerely want to see MNRG be given props and succeed.
Tell you what, if I find my way down to cheer on MNRG taking on Sioux Falls, I will be happy to buy you a drink and hope you can see that I am one of the last people who wants any kind of noice between the two leagues.
Great respect and props Diamond and to your team,
Pig/Ger
This is getting good
This is getting good. Minnesota and North Star are snippy.
I predict a Minnesota - North Star face off at regionals. Gonna be an awesome game.
Can't wait for NC Regionals
I think NC regionals are going to be crazy this year and I can't wait. Whether it works out for us to play MNRG or Brewcity, I know I always have such a great time playing them. It seems like the bouts are always close and every jam is vital to the outcome...ok, so Brewcity's crushing of us last month didn't exactly fit this criteria but all the other bouts against these two teams have been fun to watch or play in.
Add to that Omaha and Naptown's addition to the top 10 in our region and I definitely think there is possibility for surprises. Hell, maybe Windy City will let someone else in our region win a game against them for once. Yeah, probably not.
But enough about that: I am doing nothing but drinking milk in preparation for our opening round game against Madison. I think I'm gonna need it...

vs. BAD
We are just scrimmaging MNRG the day after they play Sacred. It is not a sanctioned bout.
We are excited for the opportunity though. We haven't played them since "Roll for the Cure" in 2008.
Sanctioning doesn't seem to matter to DNN...
How well teams do against each other in sanctioned bouts only matter as much as each individual ranking group wants them to. Taking the opportunity to be snippy myself, DNN didn't seem to care about MNRG's showing at ECE, where we beat two teams on this list in sanctioned bouts.
WHAT??? THIS TOO IS AN OUTRAGE!!!
It seems like i just typed "WHAT??? IT'S AN OUTRAGE, I TELL YOU!!!" somewhere, but now i can't find out so a) These Power Rankings are an outrage, i tell you; b) The fact that i cannot find my original post stating that these Power Rankings are an outrage, i tell you, is an additional outrage.
NERDS!!!
You're all a bunch of nerds!
In any event, Brewcity's
In any event, Brewcity's margin of victory over Northstar might be a "surprising outcome," but the outcome itself shouldn't be at all surprising, given the fact that Brewcity is ranked #5 in the North Central and Northstar is #6.
Indeed.
Plus, Brew City has beaten North Star every single time they've played. 3 or 4 times now.
3 times
North Star have lost to Brewcity 3 times: by 1 point in June, 2009, by 27 points at regionals last September and then last month.
Chicago Outfit and DC were
Chicago Outfit and DC were mentioned last month, so not all teams that were "On the Rise" made it.
Chicago beat Tampa by 43 in May, and are only getting better. =)
Rat and Rose...
Their next bout is against each other on 8/13.
P.S. Horray for Jet City!
Nashville, you're killing me!!!
You're my dark horse in the betting ring we have running for Regionals - fire up girls!!!
This makes no sense.
Nashville, who is 8 and 2, falls off the charts because they havent "defeated anybody impressive", and yet Tampa, who are 5 and 10, climb on after beating Dallas by three points?
Don't get me wrong, i rooted for Tampa the entire time at the Rocket City Rumble, but screw that. I understand that Nashville haven't been playing super highly ranked teams much of the season, but the fact that Tampa can climb on after one win of a tiny margin after losing half of their games for the entire SEASON makes no sense to me.
Not Winning
Winning has little to do with being on DNN's power rankings. It's how well you play. Just for fun, you go to Oly and lose by 10 points and then go to Gotham and lose by 5 points and not play another game that month. Guaranteed you'll be in the top 10 next month.
Not even the BSC is this screwy
I hate to use college football as an example here but it it the best thing I have. If say SMU was 8 and 2 they would at least be getting a sniff of the top 25 no matter who they played and a 3 and 6 Penn State wouldn't even ranked despite super close loses to Michigan, Ohio State, Iowa, etc.
I understand the whole arguing that an established bigger team would beat a smaller team with a winning record based on who they play, but that is just a fanboy (or fangirl as the case may be) debate. Of course that is what DNN is: for the fans, by fans & supported by fans and the rankings on here are subjective at best.
By no means do we expect everybody to agree
Nashville's dropping, though, has a lot more to do with losing by a significant margin to (then) unranked Providence than it does to not defeating anybody impressive.
Win-loss records aren't really an effective way of comparing teams' strengths, and won't be unless some sort of standardized season eventually develops. Strength of schedule is way more pertinent. For example, both Charm City and Texas have losing records this year, but I don't think that many people would expect Nashville to defeat either one of those teams if they were to meet tomorrow.
Finally, we did say in the intro article that we think Nashville, Dallas, North Star, Providence, Tampa Bay and Jet City are a fairly tightly matched clump (allowing for the possibility that Nashville / Providence might have been quite a bit closer if Nashville had had Ramb0 & Slammylou for that game) but we have to put them in some kind of order. I have a feeling there would be even more outrage if we ended the list with a six-way tie for #23.
BTW, is Sexy Slaydie still playing for Nashville? I was very sad to not see her at ECE, I remember her destroying people left and right at last year's South Central and was hoping to see more of that.
Nashville
Slaydie is now a Gotham girl. I expect you'll be seeing more of her destroying people pretty soon, but in the wrong colors.
http://derbynewsnetwork.com/users/sexyslaydie
Also, I wasn't suprised Nashville dropped. They had a rough month starting with ECE, but I wouldn't count them out quite yet.
yes
yes, Slaydie makes her Gotham (Brooklyn Bombshells) debut (barring the unexpected) on Sept 11th, vs. the Manhattan Mayhem. Streaming live on DNN!
what are these "wrong" colors of which you speak? :-)
Wifey
I'm very excited to see her debut in Sept. Oh, and by the way the Brooklyn Bombshells are stil NRG blue!
I'd be remiss if I didn't take the opportunity to say...
Slaydie is now a Gotham girl. I expect you'll be seeing more of her destroying people pretty soon, but in the wrong colors.
Damn yankees!
I'm not sure if the context would be more ironic if she'd skated for Boston in between Nashville and Gotham. I had to restrain my urge to capitalize the Y.
Elementary school music teacher ditched the awful music books the district provided us in favor of 50s/60s Broadway musicals and folk. She failed at turning me gay but succeeded at keeping me a jocular lefty. And tripled my repertoire of obscure references in the process.
ramb0
ramb0 played at ece in both games.
help me understand
in addition to the defeat of the tampa ladies by the chicago outfit, 135-92, the outfit had also defeated the philly independence dolls 159-52, while jet had defeated them by less of a margin, 153-87, all at the midwest brewhaha.
maybe i am missing something, i do have a tendency to get confused easily. could tampa and jet have beaten us to the rankings because we (the outfit) have not played since the brewhaha?
gayg
Point deferentials
Point differentials only go so far. A blow out is a blow out, a close game is a close game. I wouldn't really compare a 50 point loss and a hundred point loss by the same team as a definite sign one team is better than the other.
BAD lost by about 100 to Philly (#4), with a strong 1st half, penalty trouble in the second.
Charm lost by about 100 to Denver (#5), with a strong 1st half, penalty trouble in the second.
Yet Charm is ranked just 3 slots below Denver, and we are ranked 10 slots below the higher ranked Philly.
Do I think this is evidence that charm and BAD are closer in skill than we are ranked yes, but there is no clear evidence to support that. Just these indirect point differentials. DNN sometimes uses data and sometimes uses their gut, which I guess you need to do when there isn't a set schedule where everyone is playing each other.
They'll have to go without data for a while on London. They'll just keep 'em in the rankings on a gut feeling I guess.
I guess the gut feeling on you guys is you're not worthy. No worries, we get that a lot too.
disclaimer: I'm very pregnant and ornery
The problem....
Is that there are probably about 10 teams that should/could be in the top 5... 25 that should/could be in the top 15, and 40 in the top 25.
God, this sport has to stop getting more and more competitive and stuff!
agree
I don't like differentials being a determining factor in rankings and such either. IMHO teams shouldn't be going for the biggest blowout possible. It's boring. Teams should be playing 2nd stringers and keeping it reasonably interesting for spectators.

i won't challenge the minds of the men who carry a very difficult job, they seem to be good men. i will, however, just patiently wait for the glorious appearance of the chicago outfit on the top 25. if that day shalt not come, i will, in the meantime, be having fun roller skating with some big butted ladies. how's that for positivity?!?!
i just did yoga, what's up vinyasa!

#24!!!!!!!!!!!
Hell yeah! gotta keep our eyes on top ten now!
Nashville's also lost a few
Nashville's also lost a few core players mid-season to injuries, moving and some just not able to make it to the ECE trip. Lets just say we started stronger in the beginning of the season...travel games unfortunately fell this season right when the team is going through a tiny evolution.
Two of those movers being myself (to Carolina) and Fully Addomatic (to Philly).
Slammylou and 5 Scar Jeneral to injuries.
Britches N Hose couldn't make the ECE trip.
Rambo couldn't make the Providence trip.
Not to place a team's strength on a handful of skaters, but there's some reworking within the team going on and definitely some up-and-comers that will for sure have the experience necessary by regionals to get Nashville back in there and together.
Nashville's got it and they'll for sure get there. I have total faith in them. An amazing pack of smart and resourceful folks.
p.s. Keep your eyes on
p.s. Keep your eyes on Showstopper. I think she's Nashville's new replacement for Slaydie.
Montreal
The New Skids on the Block arent playing in San Diego in Oct, the Sexpos are ( B team) As Montreals first showing at Regionals ever we would like to take the time to thank everyone we have played over the course of the year to make it this far ( wins and losses) Stay Tuned to Yonkers as the Neon Rainbow explodes all over New York.
Power Rankings
Well, it's that time of month again. Other than keeping the top five the same, does anybody have a clue or idea about what the following 20 should be? There were a lot of bouts in August and the results of many of them just confuse me.
