Derby News Network Power Rankings - June 2009

DNN WFTDA W/L Next Notes
1 E 2009 2-0
2008 10-0
6/6 @ Carolina No action or movement in May, but they'll get a chance to extend a 14-game winning streak against Carolina early in June -- and though they won't be present at this year's ECE, they get a challenging rematch of last year's ECE marquee bout when they take on #4 Texas on June 19.
2 Windy City
(+2)
1 NC 2009 2-0
2008 12-4
6/27 @ Cincinnati No action or movement in May. Late June's ECE presents them with their first top-ten opponent of 2009, Boston.
3 Philly

2 E 2009 2-0
2008 10-4
6/13 @ Maine Philly's looking very solid after nearly doubling up two of the toughest teams in the east, Carolina and Boston. ECE brings two out-of-region challenges, with bouts against Rat City and Kansas City.
4 Texas
(-2)
1 SC 2009 3-0
2008 10-4
6/19 @ Gotham Girls Texas crushed the very green Oklahoma Victory Dolls 451-8 in late May, but the near-complete lack of challenge there probably says nothing about the potential results of their upcoming bouts against experienced East Coast squads #1 Gotham, #7 Charm City and #8 Boston.
5 Oly

2 W 2009 4-0
2008 6-2
7/11 vs Texas Rollergirls Hotrod Honeys After debuting just two months ago at #10, the sudden Pacific Northwest powerhouse vaults into the top five on the strength of their 197-54 blowout win over Pikes Peak in May -- a considerably bigger victory than Charm City put up on Pikes in April.
6 Denver

3 W 2009 4-1
2008 4-8
7/25 @ Atlanta Though they were idle in May, triangulation from a big defeat of Pikes Peak in Feburary, added to their exceedingly narrow 2-point loss to Oly, allows Denver to draft Oly's rise and skip by the tight Eastern clump of Charm City, Boston and Carolina.
7 Charm City

3 E 2009 8-1
2008 9-2
6/20 @ Texas Charm City held a big lead over Carolina for most of their May bout on the way to a convincingly solid 127-100 win, and seems to have a solid hold on #3 in the East going into tournament season unless June holds some major upsets. The Baltimore crew tries to crack the top five when they take on Texas in a closed, neutral-ground sanctioned bout on June 21.
8 Boston
(+3)
5 E 2009 2-3
2008 9-2
6/20 vs Texas Boston has had trouble against East region rivals this year with losses to Gotham, Philly and Charm City, but they effectively defended their spot in the top ten in May by performing to ranking expectations in a big 125-87 win over #16 Rocky Mountain. June brings an inter-regional challenge against extremely experienced Texas, along with a final chance to take out a regional opponent when they face Carolina at the ECE.
9 Carolina
(+4)
4 E 2009 1-2
2008 7-5
6/6 vs Gotham Girls Carolina suffered a tough loss at home to Charm City in May, but gets two more shots at regional opponents in June, hosting Gotham early in the month and Boston at the ECE.
10 Rose City
(-2)
4 W 2009 1-1
2008 6-4
7/17 vs Carolina Not much interleague action for the Portland girls so far this year, but two close games against impressive teams in Oly and Rat City clearly demonstrate that they're a force. There won't be any more data for them until early August, though.
11 Rat City
(-2)
5 W 2009 2-1
2008 3-3
6/6 vs Detroit After a stumble out of the blocks this year against longtime regional rival Rose City, Rat City swamped Bay Area and then survived a tough challenge from Duke City in May to claim a winning record thus far on the year. Rat City takes on some opponents from other regions in June, getting meetings with North Central's Detroit (at home) and the East's Philly and Charm City at ECE.
12 Duke City
(+3)
6 W 2009 2-2
2008 6-3
6/6 vs Dallas Duke put together one of the most impressive second-half comebacks in the history of WFTDA play by dropping 50 unanswered points on Rat City to turn what looked like a sure blowout into a last-jam nailbiter, but came up just a little short at 125-118. Still, that 7 point margin of victory shows that Duke is right in the thick of the tournament hunt in probably the deepest region in derby.
13 Bay Area
(-1)
1 W 2009 1-1
2008 13-3
7/31 @ Boston The San Francisco crew takes a big fall after a big loss to visiting Rat City, tumbling eight slots down and out of the top ten. BADG won't get another chance to impress until August, long after tournament seeding will have been decided.
14 Detroit
(-4)
2 NC 2009 2-1
2008 8-3
6/6 @ Rat City Detroit defeated Grand Raggidy handily in May, but the real test comes when they head to Seattle to take on Rat City in a match that should say a fair amount about the relative strength of the North Central region vs the West. They also get two challenging bouts against Charm City and Carolina at ECE.
15 Pikes Peak
(+3)
7 W 2009 4-3
2008 10-3
6/13 vs Sacred City While Pikes Peak lost big to Oly, it seems that outcome might say more about the meteoric improvement on Oly's part than major problems for PPDD, so the Colorado Springs team holds steady for now.
16 San Diego

- 2009 8-1
2008 5-7
8/15 @ Bay Area San Diego cemented its place in the DNN Power Rankings by dominating The Big One, which is more or less the California state championship tournament. The Wildfires flat track team won't be back in action until October, but the nearly identical roster that constitutes The Swarm will compete in Austin at this month's Battle of the Bank II: Capital Punishment tournament, hosted by TXRD.
8 W 2009 0-4
2008 12-4
6/6 vs Omaha Still looking for their first win in a bumpy 2009 after getting handily beaten on the road this month by Boston -- their now 0-4 record costs them a spot this month. Though a good team, they're currently looking up at most of the rest of a very dangerous pool of talent in the West.
18 Kansas City
(-4)
2 SC 2009 2-0
2008 5-2
6/6 @ Northwest Arkansas The Roller Warriors hold steady after a crushing (but expected) defeat of No Coast. They've got two good opportunities to climb back up the ranks at ECE, first in a battle against similarly-ranked Madison and second in the final game of the weekend against hosts Philly.
19 Madison

3 NC 2009 1-0
2008 9-7
6/27 @ Kansas City A solid victory over Cincinnati is consistent with the teams' previous ranks. Madison pops up a slot with the help of Arch Rival dropping a few, and has the chance to keep upward momentum with the help of the aforementioned bout against Kansas City at the ECE.
20 Houston
(+1)
3 SC 2009 2-0
2008 4-10
7/18 vs Texas Rollergirls Honky Tonk Heartbreakers Defeated Atlanta in May and squeaks back into the top twenty as Arch Rival drops.
21 Cincinnati
(+1)
4 NC 2009 4-1
2008 12-7
6/20 vs Ohio The hot-and-cold Ohioans started May with a stumble against Madison, but ended it with their biggest victory ever over Grand Raggidy (in so doing booting the Michiganders out of the Power Rankings.) They'll try their luck against the current queens of the North Central region when they play Windy City at ECE.
22 Arch Rivals
(-2)
5 NC 2009 2-3
2008 5-2
6/20 @ Duke City After an unexpectedly tough time against unranked Brewcity, Arch Rival joins Bay Area, Grand Raggidy and Minnesota as teams dropping more than a single slot.
23 Tucson

9 W 2009 1-1
2008 2-11
8/9 vs Duke City Tucson's ranking mostly hangs on an impressive, if ultimately failed, comeback effort against top-ten Denver at February's Four Corner Feud, but in a 2009 in which teams have been improving at the fastest rate ever, that data point is starting to get a little stale. TRD's been idle since February and won't be in action again until late July against a much busier Duke City.
24 Angel City
(-1)
10 W 2009 6-2
2008 8-6
6/6 @ Sin City The L.A. girls played 50 minutes of a thriller to almost upset San Diego in the championship bout of The Big One, but SDDD took over at the end. Still, though, that performance, coming on the heels of dominating earlier opponents in The Big One and a respectable 138-82 loss to Bay Area in April, suggests that for the first time, ACDG is a tournament-caliber team.
25 Providence

7 E 2009 3-1
2008 2-7
7/25 @ Montréal Providence scoops up the last spot on the strength of a three game winning streak that included a win over a Philly home team, a defeat of earlier #25 Harrisburg, and a solid victory over Maine in May. With at least five different teams all having a reasonable case at the margin, though, the #25 spot looks like it might be volatile for a while.
