Derby News Network Power Rankings - April 2009

DNN WFTDA W/L Next Notes
1 E 2009 1-0
2008 10-0
4/18 @ Charm City The Gotham Girls emerged as the new monsters of derby in 2008, wrapping up an undefeated season by sweeping three bouts at Nationals with an average victory margin of 121 points. Five months later in their first subsequent bout, they dismissed Boston by a score of 188-44, silencing any question about their continued stature. The NYC machine has yet to reveal any chinks in its armor.
2 Windy City
(+2)
1 NC 2009 1-0
2008 12-4
4/25 vs Arch Rivals Seemingly owns the WFTDA North Central region as definitively as Gotham owns the East, putting down their closest regional rival Detroit by 60 points.
3 Philly

2 E 2009 0-0
2008 10-4
4/11 @ Carolina No 2009 action for Philly yet, but they start a defense of their lofty ranking with two big travel bouts against high-level East competition this month: Carolina on the 11th and Boston a week later on the 18th.
4 Texas
(-2)
1 SC 2009 1-0
2008 10-4
5/3 vs Atlanta No action or movement since last month.
5 Bay Area
(+7)
i W 2009 0-0
2008 13-3
4/18 @ Angel City No action or movement since last month.
6 Carolina
(+7)
i E 2009 1-0
2008 7-5
4/11 vs Philly Carolina gains one on Rat City's fall, but they'll face their first big test of the year when Philly visits on the 11th.
7 Charm City

4 E 2009 6-0
2008 9-2
4/18 vs Gotham Girls Boston represented Charm City's first serious challenge of a very aggressive schedule. That victory moves them up a couple notches, but they've got their work cut out for them this month, hosting two ranked teams in a single night -- one of which is on an unprecedented 13-0 run.
8 Boston
(+3)
3 E 2009 1-2
2008 9-2
4/18 vs Philly One week after narrowly losing a close contest against Charm City, Boston became Gotham's first victim of the year, in a bout that may say more about the #1 team's continued dominance than about any Boston weakness. Charm City steps over them in the rankings while Rat City falls by, so no movement here.
9 Denver
(-3)
4 W 2009 3-0
2008 4-8
4/11 @ Oly Although they didn't play in March, Denver pops up a spot on the drop by Rat City. In a battle between arguably the most quickly improving teams in WFTDA right now, they'll take on Oly this month.
10 Oly
(-5)
5 W 2009 2-0
2008 6-2
4/11 vs Denver After a year of knocking on the door, Oly kicks it wide open and earns a stratospheric debut with an upset of Rose City. The 9 vs 10 matchup this month with Denver will help pin down whether this mercurial team is on a steady rise.
11 Rose City
(-3)
i W 2009 1-1
2008 6-4
7/17 vs Carolina Up and down month for Portland, as they get upset by an unranked team in Oly but strike back seven days later to upset longtime rival Rat City.
12 Rat City
(-3)
1 W 2009 0-1
2008 3-3
5/9 @ Bay Area After a battering by Windy City at Nationals and the loss of several standout players, questions abounded about RCRG, and their close March loss to Rose City suggests they're not quite the force they were in the 2007 tournaments -- but the Oly-Rose-Rat City Pacific Northwest cluster seems currently very closely matched.
13 Duke City
(+2)
i W 2009 1-1
2008 6-3
4/25 vs San Diego Duke City drops a few spots under the weight of Rat City's recent loss while the Oly/Rose/Rat City group played two extremely competitive games. The Rat City that Duke faced at Western Regionals isn't the same crew that played in March, but that lopsided 158-98 final seems enough to keep Rat City ahead until proven otherwise.
14 Detroit
(-4)
i NC 2009 1-1
2008 8-3
5/2 @ Grand Raggidy Detroit stands pat as they're passed by debuting Oly, but also by sinking Kansas City. A big loss to Windy City suggests they're not yet ready to make a play for the top spot in the North Central, but right now it seems they have a solid grip on second.
15 Pikes Peak
(+3)
3 W 2009 4-1
2008 10-3
4/18 @ Charm City Pikes Peak disassembled young Slaughterhouse in March, but the experience difference was enormous. April will see a better test of the PPDD abilities when they travel out of region to take on top-ten Charm City.
16 Rocky Mountain
(+1)
2 W 2009 0-2
2008 12-4
4/4 vs Team Awesome No action or movement since last month.
17 Kansas City
(-3)
i SC 2009 1-0
2008 5-2
5/2 vs No Coast In March, KCRW was taken to the last jam in escaping with a 9 point victory over an Arch Rival team that Detroit beat by 62. Like Rat City, they seem to be restructuring after major roster losses and retirements.
18 Arch Rivals
(+2)
i NC 2009 1-2
2008 5-2
4/25 @ Windy City Bouncing up a few spots by almost pulling off a huge upset of Kansas City. This month they get a huge test going up against #2 Windy City -- with their steady schedule of highly ranked opponents, they're likely to get the experience to keep rising through the summer.
19 Madison

2 NC 2009 0-0
2008 9-7
5/9 @ Cincinnati No action so far in 2009, and slip a couple notches on Oly's debut and Arch Rival's rise.
20 Houston
(+1)
2 SC 2009 1-0
2008 4-10
5/2 vs Atlanta No 2009 action since a big spanking of Big Easy in January, and, like Madison, lose a couple of spots on the rises of other teams.
21 Cincinnati
(+1)
3 NC 2009 2-0
2008 12-7
4/11 vs Burning River The Black Sheep gave new WFTDA members Hard Knox a serious shellacking in March, but their next serious test comes in May when they host the Dairyland Dolls from Madison.
22 Tucson

i W 2009 1-1
2008 2-11
8/9 vs Duke City No action, but drops a notch on Oly's meteoric rise.
23 Minnesota
(+1)
4 NC 2009 0-0
2008 7-7
4/25 @ Grand Raggidy Minnesota opens their season this month with on the road against Grand Raggidy, the results of which will likely bear on seeding into the North Central tournament in September.
i NC 2009 1-1
2008 7-8
4/25 vs Minnesota In March, the girls from Grand Rapids treated Bloomington's Bleeding Heartland a 205-point helping of "Welcome to WFTDA," but they slip a notch on Oly's ascent. The next two months brings several in-region trials, as they host Minnesota and Detroit before traveling to Cincinnati to try to avenge February's home loss.
25 Harrisburg

i E 2009 1-1
2008 6-2
4/11 @ Providence A respectable loss to Charm City didn't impact their position, but Oly's rankings debut does. The Nuclear Knockouts meet the veteran Rhode Island Riveters in April.
