[Update] WFTDA tournaments on MavTV
According to this post over at HDWT, MavTV will be taping the WFTDA Eastern and National tournaments for later broadcast. Look here to see if you're within their current network. Should a cable network who's motto is "TV by men for men" get such awesome rights? The WFTDA membership negotiated and voted for it, so we can only assume it will be a good move for the sport and the association. And totally sweet for fans who can't make it to Columbus or Austin.
Update: read on for the full WFTDA press release.
UK joins the fray
Several leagues have formed up across the pond and the London Rollergirls are finally ready to take it live. First official bout: "The Great Rock n' Rollerderby Swindle". Good luck, ladies, and congrats on getting it up.
Another new UK league, the Birmingham Blitz Derby Dames will debut in October.
[Update 5] Dispatches from Rollercon 2007
Not a lot of news out of Las Vegas yet...the usual web haunts are quiet as many of the derby ringleaders meet, greet, and skate. We'll update with more as it comes in. Anyone got stories, gossip, photos, etc? Send 'em in!
Derby pilgrim Hurt Reynolds took time to post a quick recap from day one. Click here to read. "Jerry's most telling anecdote: At the height of the sport's previous success, in the 50's, roller derby consisted of six teams totalling 83 skaters. It only took a look around the room to see how much the modern sport has accomplished in so little time."

Houston jammer brings home the gold
From today's Houston Roller Derby newsletter:
Congratulations to our very own Flame & Rage for bringing home A GOLD MEDAL from the 2007 USA Roller Sports Indoor Speed Skating National Championships!
The Bayou City Boss and star jammer, accompanied by her coach Madame M of the Machete Betties and the rest of the Dairy Ashford Speed Team, took first place in the Women's Quad Master's 300, 700, and 1000 meter races of the USA Rollersports Speed Skating National Competition last month in Omaha, Nebraska.
"The Quickness," as her team captain Death By Chocolate has dubbed her, has put Houston on the speed skating map in her very first attempt at a national competition.
Cinicinnati defeats Gem City in first WFTDA bout
Cincinnati 116, Gem City 100

Texas Rollergirls championship recap
The Colonel (announcer for Houston Roller Derby) has this amusingly low-fi podcast dispatch from the Texas Rollergirls' championship bout. Highlights include the betrothal of Jim "Kool-Aid" Jones, the retirement of announcer extraordinaire Whiskey L'Amour, and a controversial star drop that may have kept the Hotrod Honeys from closing the narrow gap on the Hell Marys.
Update: Read on for Gnosis' [non-authoritative] analysis of the controversy.
Interview with the Ohio Roller Girls
I recently contacted the Ohio Roller Girls to get some dirt on the upcoming 2007 WFTDA Eastern Region Tournament (aka Heartland Havoc) and they were happy to oblige. Alli Catraz, who considers Lead Jammer to be "legitimate media" (!), answered some questions via email. Read on!
Roller Derby on the Plaza
Today Show reporter Natalie Morales joins the Charm City Roller Girls for a few jams and the Gotham Girls skate around in the rain trying to knock Hambone over. Who could ask for more? Watch the whole thing here.
Tucson defeats Madison in Madison
Final score:
Tucson 120
Madison 66
It was a frustrating bout for the Dairyland Dolls. The extremely tough Saddletramps pack kept the Madison jammers down to "normal" scoring passes while opening big holes for their own jammers to run up the score. The third period was especially rough as the Dolls, going in minus nineteen, lost a bit of composure and some rather flagrant penalties allowed the Saddletramps to pile on even more points.
Sin City to host 3rd annual all-female roller derby convention
Five-day event will feature training workshops, flat-track derby scrimmages and huge parties.
Las Vegas, NV - July 12, 2007 - August 8th through August 12th, RollerCon '07 will once again have the Las Vegas Strip spinning when an estimated 2500 skaters, fans and family of grassroots roller derby leagues whirl in to town to celebrate and share their favorite sport! In 2006, skaters traveled from every corner of the continental United States and Canada to attend the convention, but this year’s attendees span the globe, including skaters from leagues in England, Scotland, Germany, New Zealand, and Australia. They’ll come together for 5 days of non-stop action, workshops, meetings, concerts, competitions and demonstrations – all for the love of roller derby! Read on for more...
Dairyland Dolls out-horsepower Hotrod Honeys 101 to 92
After losing to the Dairyland Dolls last year on their home track in Austin, the Hotrod Honeys came to Madison looking for payback. The girls in pink & black were in fine form and gave the fans at Fast Forward a night of nail-biting, fast as lightning flat track competition.
With their ferocious feline captain Cat-Tastrophe at the helm, the Texas team certainly gave Crackerjack and the DD's a run for their money. The Dolls' Mouse met her doppelganger in tiny dynamite jammer Rice Rocket, while the Honeys' Lucille Brawl kept the home team blockers busy.
Little Georgie still rolling right along
For you derby historians out there, here's today's second article about an old-school derby star. Little Georgie Copeland, the first African-American to play derby and probably the youngest jammer to ever skate professionally, skated in the 50s for the L.A. Braves and the L.A Thunderbirds. Like another article posted earlier today, the piece seems oblivious to modern derby. "George Copeland might be older and might be heavier, but he still retains the charismatic persona that once made him such a popular figure in a sport that sadly has disappeared."
Derby veteran seeks roller renaissance
The London Free Press has this short article about a guy who wishes there were some roller derby in the world. Perhaps he, and the author of the article, should check out the LRG or the Blitz Dames, for a start. Then look across the pond a bit, eh.
EDIT: Whoops...I just assumed this was from London, England. The guy's from London, ONTARIO. Ok, then. He could check out his own brand new London Thrashers/London Derby Girls/Forest City Derby Girls (identity crisis?) or, of course, the ToRD.
How to Watch Roller Derby
Tad Awkward sent a link to this entertaining article on wikiHow. Go and read it.
Pick a team to root for. If you are not already a fan, base your decision on something completely arbitrary, such as 'I like that one girl's socks.'
