YES!!!

Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!!!
We know you will do us proud VRDL All Stars and you have the whole Australian Derby community cheering you on!! You've worked hard for this, show them just how awesome you really are! <3

Impressive start already

Victorian is already off to an impressive start of their road trip, by taking down Duke in a practice scrimmage last night.

A bit of history:
Last year the Dust Devil tournament proved to the key WFTDA event for the West region. The third place winner was invited to Western regionals; that was Angel City.

There's a very good chance that this year's third place winner will also be invited to Westerns. Of course, IMO, if you can make it to the championship game that's an automatic entry to regionals.

O.K Aussies, now you know what to root for. And of course for all the other West region leagues, IMO, top three go to regionals.

VRDL v Rocky Final

That's what I had in my bracket (in my head).

Looking at this game, I'm now feeling less confident about Rocky getting there (thanks to the Arizona Joymatrix factor!) than I am VRDL.

We'll see, though.

radness

Go you lovely ladies in blue what a fantastic start.

So impressive VRDL

Is there a URL to watch this on apple devices? Justin.tv isn't loading on iPhones.

FTS

According to flattrackstats.com the VRDL bout has them debut at... 3rd in the world! Just behind Gotham and Rocky! We can assume they'll move around, but I'm certain they've proven they deserve serious attention and assume they're getting an invite to Westerns.

You'd think so...

...but it does depend much more on the outcome of the Angel game.

What Angel City says

One data point is not likely guarantee an invite. The game could say more about Assassination City than Victorian. And tonight we'll see what Angel City has to say about Victorian's bid for regionals.

I didn't mean it that way. I

I didn't mean it that way. I meant that I think they were playing very well and I predict they will continue to play well enough to earn an invite.

Hmmm... I was ready to say I

Hmmm... I was ready to say I was totally wrong, but the final score of the Angel City Victoria bout ended up closer than it started, so I'm not convinced I'm TOTALLY wrong. Considering they had a double header and might have still had some jet lag... I can't say they would always lose that bout. Still, I am willing to say that 3rd in the nation is probably higher than they are currently skating.

Indeed

I am in agreement. It took VRDL a little while to adapt to that level of play, but they go there in the end -- which is very impressive to do over the course of a single bout. The first half had, for me, serious shades of London vs Montreal (the first time around) last year... a good team really struggling to adapt to a new level of play, but showing serious potential once they got their shit together.

Regardless, the key bout for West region tournament entry is now probably Angel v Sacred in May 5.

Arizona are still an interesting one... I don't see many bouts scheduled for them at the moment that would let them prove their worth. If they do give Rocky a good run for their money today that could be enough, but if they don't, it all depends who they schedule before the end of Q2.

A big win for Angel v Sacred would make things very interesting indeed, as would a really big win for Rocky v Arizona today. The West, as ever, is absurdly competitive.

not so sure

Was it an adjustment or was it taking advantage of the moment?

Don't get me wrong, VRDL learned a lot and quickly during that game. But until the last ten minutes ACDG dominated. In the last 10 minutes we saw severe penalty troubles on ACDG that left one/two blockers on the track and VRDL very wisely took advantage of that. Not a knock to the team by any means, but I think they very effectively took advantage of the situation and gained momentum to finish off strong. Also, being ACDGs first game of the season I think they got a little shaken up and lost focus.

I look forward to seeing VRDL finish out this tournament, a very strong fifth place will say a lot about their place in the west.

You may have a point.

I think the two often go hand in hand -- penalty trouble doesn't normally just come from nowhere, and the team benefiting from an opponent in penalty trouble can quite often take some credit for applying the pressure that put their opponents in that situation. Not entirely sure that was the case here, though--just not confident enough making a call based on what I remember seeing on the feed at that hour!

We'll see how it goes.

Perennial problems.

I am SO EXCITED to be able to watch this tournament and I totally appreciate all of the volunteers making the streams possible.

Can you all please relay a bit of feedback to the camera operators to take a wider view of the pack and not follow a single jammer around the track? I know that VDRL's defense has to be incredibly disciplined and skilled to shut down the veteran offense of Assassination City, but can't wrap my head around how they are doing it because the video didn't encompass the whole pack, especially the part of the pack that was shutting down a trailing jammer.

I understand the challenges and appreciate the awesome job everyone is already doing.

Thanks!

Word.

We're definitely on it. As is often the case, we're breaking in several first-time derby camera operators, so it takes a little time to download the whole matrix of framing if/then cases into their brains. They seem to be pretty qiuck on the uptake, so you should see steady improvements over the course of the afternoon.
