Madison Intraleague Recap: Reservoir Dolls 85, Unholy Rollers 68

Posted by Geoffrey Saucer on 27th March 2008

MADISON, WI — The Reservoir Dolls faced a prospect unimaginable to them during the previous three MRD seasons – not only a losing season, but going 0-3. With a win against the ResDolls, the Unholy Rollers would also find themselves in strange territory with a winning season. In the end, neither happened in the second bout of the Mad Rollin’ Dolls’ regular season finale, although the ResDolls 85-68 win wasn’t without moments open to these possibilities.

The Reservoir Dolls defense blanked the Unholies jammers for long stretches of the first half. Only Jewels of Denile proved an able scorer against the ladies in black, scoring 17 of her teams’ 31 first half points in just two jams. Lead by team captain Mouse’s speed, five Dolls jammers steadily built up a 43-31 lead by half.

A star pass from Mouse to Crackerjack to start the second half wasn’t productive as the Dolls might have wished. With two minutes of her own to score, Jewels of Denile limited the play’s advantage to only two points, 8-6. In the following jam, the Unholies’ defense frustrated Tatum Tantrum while rookie Tango Muerte put together a 10-0 jam over almost two full minutes. The Unholies were within four points of the Dolls. With two Dolls in the penalty box, the Unholies’ Mack the Knife put her team ahead 56-55 in the following jam. It seemed as if victory was about to slip away from the Dolls again.

It wasn’t to be. Hacksaw added nine on a two minute jam with the Unholies’ jammer in the box, then Mouse added five. With these five points Mouse became the second player in MRD history (after Jenny Knoxville) to pass the 500 points scored mark. A scary moment followed when Crackerjack, as jammer, went down hard after getting a helmet to the jaw. After a few minutes down and surrounded by her friends, the flat track icon made it to the EMT station under her own power.

Adding insult to CJ’s injury, the Dolls’ jammer also went to the box. With only three skaters on the track, the Reservoir Dolls’ defense shut down the Unholies’ Back Doris. Tatum Tantrum came out of the box to grab the lead and avert a possible disaster for the Dolls. From this point on, the Dolls jammers captured the remaining leads, while their defense was almost impenetrable. Over the final twelve minutes of play, the Unholies managed only 13 points to 30 for the Reservoir Dolls. Final score, 85-68 Reservoir Dolls.

On April 12, the Madison playoff kick off as regular season champs the Quad Squad face off once again with the Unholy Rollers, while the Reservoir Dolls start their quest for three championships in a row as they take on the Vaudeville Vixens.

Madison Intraleague Recap: Quad Squad 77, Vaudeville Vixens 76

Posted by Geoffrey Saucer on 27th March 2008

MADISON, WI — Somehow, out of the confusion and uncertainty that’s flat track derby, the Quad Squad look like they have everything under control, even when behind in the score with time running out. Facing a determined Vaudeville Vixen team, the Quads trailed most of the game, but stayed cool and out played the Vixens in the final 7:30 with a 17-4 run and a 77-76 victory.

The two teams skated very evenly in the first half, often with the jammers skating in tandem while both defenses displayed solid discipline. Even jammer penalties had little effect on the point spread. The score at half was 43-39 in favor of the Vaudeville Vixens.

A jammerless jam half way through the second period resulted in Darling Nikki wearing the star for the Vixens. When the stop whistle blew on this, the 17th jam of the bout, Nikki had put together an 8-0 jam and the Vixens had the largest lead of the night at 72-60. It was at this point that the Quad machine kicked in. Thunder Kitten and Jenny Knoxville traded jams for the Quads, always settling for four points or less and relying on the defense to do the rest. In the second to last jam, Jenny Knoxville sped around the defense on the outside, grabbing two points and called the jam with less than a half minute remaining. The Quads had a one point margin and the game. Always the smart player, Knoxville did no more than necessary to get the win.

Both the Vixens and Quads are tight teams, and they play like it. It’s hard to find any one moment or player who turned the game, but if one had to choose, it would the defensive play of the Quads’ Stitch down the stretch. As either pivot or blocker, she was always at the front of the pack, seemingly knowing the opposing jammer’s moves before she made them. While Thunder Kitten had another 40 point night and Jenny Knoxville showed her smarts and steely competitiveness, Stitch shut down the Vixens’ jammers one after the other when it mattered most.

Madison’s playoffs begin on April 12, as regular season champs the Quad Squad face off once again with the Unholy Rollers, while two-time champions the Reservoir Dolls seek payback for their January loss to the Vaudeville Vixens.

Bout Preview: (19) Rocky Mountain @ (9) Madison

Posted by Justice Feelgood Marshall on 19th October 2007

The big WFTDA matchup of this weekend finds the #19th ranked Rocky Mountain Roller Girls traveling to Wisconsin to get on the rink with Madison’s Mad Rollin’ Dolls, who are looking to climb back up the rankings after their early exit from Eastern Regionals dropped them from #4 to #9.

The Rocky Mountain girls have been pretty active this summer, starting with June wins against unranked Angel City and #20 Atlanta (176-119 and 91-70 respectively.) #15 Rose City knocked them off in July by a score of 111-74, but Rocky Mountain has been on a roll since then, beating Division III Fort Wayne 164-69 in August and thumping unranked No Coast 108-20 in September (and shutting them out for the entire first period!) Finally, in a special interleague battle of local teams, the RMRG Sugar Kill Gang defeated the Danger Dolls of Pikes Peak Derby Dames, 120-78.

On the flip side, Madison hasn’t seen too much interleague action this year in comparison. In June, they notched a big win by defeating the Hot Rod Honeys, one of Texas’ four home teams, 101-92. The next two months, though, saw tough times for the Mad Rollin’ Dolls — first, they lost to Tucson at home by a convincing 120-64, and then were shocked by Windy City at August’s Heartland Havoc, 94-63.

Madison will be hosting 2008’s Eastern Regional tournament next October, so it’s a pretty safe bet they’re interested in reclaiming their former title as the team to beat in the East … and will try to start on that road with a win over Rocky Mountain.

UPDATE: Rocky Mountain scores a considerable upset, sending Madison to their third loss in a row, 131-98. Gnosis from Leadjammer mentions in comments that Madison team captain Crackerjack didn’t play in this one and the Dairyland Dolls were fielding a new lineup, which may have had an effect, but still an impressive accomplishment for Rocky Mountain. Madison’s Geoffrey Saucer has a mini-recap over here on RollerDerbyIsSport.

Excellent Chicago Tribune article on Windy City Rollers

Posted by Justice Feelgood Marshall on 28th September 2007

Hey, you know how major media outlets consistently write boilerplate pieces about the wacky new fad of roller derby? About how it’s not your mother’s roller derby? Devoting 600 words to puns and fishnets but only about 50 to, you know, actual gameplay?

Finally, the Chicago Tribune shows what a *real* feature story about a roller derby team looks like — accurate, insightful, and compelling. Granted, it hits some of the regular introductory items, but the meat of the article, which covers the Windy City upset of Madison, does an absolutely fantastic job of evoking the level of competition and drama at Heartland Havoc:

The two teams took to the track to warm up. As she passed Windy City’s bench, Crackerjack, captain of the Dairyland Dolls, flipped her skirt derisively. Then with a whistle, the game was on.

Madison came out playing hard, swiftly taking off after Athena DeCrime. Athena went down, scrambled to her feet, but was hit again and again, drawing four penalties.

“She is getting pounded,” cried announcer Mouthpiece, a.k.a. Ben Tweel.

A few minutes into the game, Madison led 12-0.

Was this to be the end? Would the 18 months of grueling practices, the bruises and the ice packs, the speed skating coach flown in from Portland, Ore., the dogged climb up the WFTDA rankings, all be for naught?

In the next scoring interval — known as a jam — Hoosier Mama powered her way through the pack with aggression and agility honed by boxing and jam skating, a kind of synchronized skate-dancing. She put Windy City’s first four points on the board.

Kola Loka , a.k.a. Dakota Prosch, 30, skating so low to the ground that she was unshakable, worked her way through the pack, changing her speed, slaloming from side to side, and racking up points. By the time a Dairyland hit finally knocked her to the ground, Windy City had drawn within one of mighty Madison, 32-31.

The period was whistled to a close.

The mood was electric, the sense of a possible upset in the air. A skater for New York’s Gotham Girls walked by during the timeout. “I’m so proud of you girls,” she whispered.

Read the whole thing, don’t forget to check out the excellent video presentation that comes with it … and if you’re so inclined, it probably wouldn’t be such a bad idea to leave a comment on the article lauding author Barbara Brotman and the Tribune for giving flat-track derby the respect it’s worked hard to deserve!

(oh, and if you’re wondering why Hurt Reynolds and I have nearly the exact same post up at the exact same time … it’s because we’re blogging from the same hotel room in Austin right now. Ah, the sweet intersection of derby and complete geekdom.)
