Tournament Preview: Rust Riot

All day tomorrow, Seattle’s Rat City Rollergirls will host a regional single-elimination tournament featuring 8 leagues from around the Pacific Northwest. Here are the participating leagues, with their tournament seeding:
- Rose City Rollers B-team, the Axles of Annihilation
- Rat City Rollergirls B-team, the Rain of Terror
- Oly Rollers Cosa Nostra Donnas
- Lava City Roller Dolls Smokin’ Ashes
- Lilac City Rollergirls
- Jet City Rollergirls Bombers
- Treasure Valley Rollergirls
- Slaughter County Roller Vixens
Just as the first Dust Devil tournament in February 2006 set the pattern for national-level tournaments, the initial Governor’s Cup tournament in September of that year showed the great promise of regional events, pitting several Texas leagues against each other for statewide bragging rights.
Similar events have proliferated over the past months. Recent and upcoming regional tournaments include:
- 7/14/2007 - Route 66 Rebellion - Midwest tournament hosted by Green Country Roller Girls
- 9/16/2007 - Governor’s Cup 2007 - Texas tournament hosted by Houston Roller Derby
- 11/24/2007 - Fall Brawl - Midwest tournament hosted by Fort Wayne Derby Girls
- 2/18/2008 - Florida State Championship hosted by Tampa Bay Derby Darlins
- 4/5/2008 - The Big One - California tournament hosted by Bay Area Derby Girls and Sacred City Derby Girls
Regional events provide a great opportunity for younger leagues to garner the same opportunities, pressures, challenges, and excitement as their older siblings enjoy at the big WFTDA events.
