DETROIT, MI — April 12 saw one of the greatest matches in Detroit Derby Girls history, but when the dust had finally settled it was the Detroit Pistoffs narrowly edging the Devil’s Night Dames by a score of 89-84. These are the two top teams in the DDG in 2008, and they showed why. There were 12 lead changes in the game, and the largest leads were 9 points for the Dames and 8 points for the Pistoffs. Each team was within 3 points of the other team after 27 of the game’s 40 jams.
Going into the final jam of the 3rd period the Pistoffs led 86-84. The Dames sent out their ace jammer Racer McChaseHer (who jammed 9 of the 3rd period’s 15 jams) versus the Pistoffs’ Effin’ Money. But it was the Pistoffs building a mighty wall with Smashing Darling, Elle McFearsome, Cookie Rumble, and Bikini Killer who first forced Racer to take an off-track detour and then held her up long enough for Effin’ to sneak through and get lead jammer. Effin’ was able to come around and score 3 points on that jam, and smartly called off the jam just as Racer had finally come around to the back of the pack to try to score. Then there wasn’t enough time to get another jam started, and that’s how it finished. It was a fine example of how derby should be played.
Each team featured a veteran lineup, although the Dames had 4 “fresh meat” (rookies) amongst their 12 skaters in uniform. The Pistoffs had 11 skaters for the game, all with previous DDG experience except for Maim West, who had formerly skated for Providence.

It wasn’t quite a case of “old age and treachery overcoming youth and skill,” but in the end it was the greater experience of the Pistolwhippers that gave them the victory over the D-Funk Allstars, 108-82, on Saturday, March 8 in a Detroit Derby Girls intraleague game, the fourth consecutive sellout for the DDG.
It was the first victory on the season for the 1-2 Pistolwhippers, while D-Funk remains winless at 0-3.
Both teams played hard all the way through the match, and in fact the D-Funkers were able to outscore the Whippers in the 3rd period by a single point and so claimed at least a moral victory and perhaps a little momentum for the rematch between these two teams in the DDG Consolation Game on May 10.

COLUMBUS, OH — The Detroit Derby Girls (ranked #8 by WFTDA) traveled to Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, January 19 and out-hustled, out-muscled, and just generally womanhandled the Ohio Roller Girls (ranked #25 by WFTDA) as Detroit cruised to a 105-57 victory. Detroit has had a history of sometimes starting slowly on an opponents’ floor, but Detroit had skated on Ohio’s SkateCourt surface four times at the Heartland Havoc tournament in 2007, and Detroit came out of the gate like they were shot out of a cannon, jumping out to a 17-2 lead after five jams, and the D-girls never looked back.
MP3: Post-bout interview with Ohio’s Pippi RipYaStockings (1:03)
Detroit opened the game alternating jammers Racer McChaseHer and Kat Von D’Stroya in the first five jams, and they gave Detroit their 17-2 lead in those jams, with Racer and Kat each scoring a grand slam along the way. Then Detroit jammed Polly Fester, Vega Vendetta, and Vicious Vixen in jams 6-8, but Ohio’s jammers Gypsy Warfare, Drrty Grrl, and Barracuda won those jams 7-0, getting lead jammer in all three of those jams and cutting Detroit’s lead to 17-9.
Detroit decided to go back to Racer in jam 9, but Ohio’s Pippi RipYourStockings won the jam 4-1, just calling the jam as Racer was entering the pack. That made the score 18-13 in Detroit’s favor, and with Ohio starting to come on strong, D-town called a time out to make some adjustments.
Detroit resumed their jammer rotation of Kat and Racer in jams 10-14, and Detroit won those jams by a 17-6 margin, upping the Detroit lead to 35-19. Kat had two more grand slams in that sequence. The rest of the half continued to go all Detroit’s way, with Detroit leading 57-30 at halftime. Of the 21 jams in the 1st half, Detroit got lead jammer 13 times to Ohio’s 7, and Detroit by far had the edge in hard hits.

On Saturday, November 17th The Rocky Mountain Rollergirls traveled to Grand Prairie, Texas to take on the Dallas Derby Devils. These two teams were closely ranked in the current quarterly WFTDA rankings, with RMRG sitting at 19, while Dallas clocked in at 23. The last interleague challenge for the Dallas squad was an away loss to the Texas Rollergirls’ Hell Marys 92 to 50, while the RMRG Fight Club won big on the road against the Mad Rollin Dolls 131 to 98.
Defense was the name of the game, as both teams came off the benches swinging heavy. The biggest point differential in the half was early in the first period, where RMRG Fight Club took a mere 7-point lead at 12-5. The DDD All Stars would end the first 30 minutes on a high note, with a 1-point lead over RMRG, 38 to 37. A true barn-burner for the crowd, no doubt!
The second period saw some adjustments in defense to account for the dreaded effects of accrued penalties. The sin bin saw heavy traffic for both sides of this interleague challenge; rarely did either team have its full complement of blockers to work at full tilt. With the score tied at 41 at 26:30 in the second half, Dallas jammer Hot for Teacher was sent to the penalty box which allowed Rocky Mountain’s She Who Cannot Be Named to score 3 crucial grand slams, putting the RMRG into a strong lead over the DDD at 56-41. DDD did narrow the lead to 67-64 but were plagued with penalties, allowing the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls to be victorious: final score RMRG 89, DDD 73. Top jammers for Rocky Mountain were speedster Frida Beater with 47 pts, and She Who Cannot Be Named with 29. For Dallas, Anita Riot led her squad with 27 points, while Hot for Teacher contributed 18.
Both squads will be back in action soon, as Rocky Mountain Rollergirls 5280 Fight Club takes on Gotham Girls Roller Derby in Denver on December 1, while the Dallas Derby Devils’ All Stars take on the the #3 Texas Rollergirls’ Texecutioners Dec 8.
In the other match of the doubleheader, an ad-hoc Oklahoma Roller Derby Girls squad comprised of members of the Green Country Rollergirls of Tulsa and the Tornado Alley Rollergirls of Oklahoma City rolled to a 78-25 victory over Dallas’ newest home team, the Death Row Rumblers. The top scoring jammers for OKRD were Anomille with 40 and Short Circuit with 16, while the Death Row Rumblers were led by Strawberry Deathcake with 14 and Holy Tara with 6.

MORE COVERAGE: DNN contributor Moose Ondaluce covers the bout via podcast, interviewing RMRG’s Frieda Beater (who isn’t too shy about expressing her opinion of the reffing in her bout!), RMRG’s She Who Cannot Be Named, Death Row Rumblers’ coach Mother Goose, Death Row Rumblers’ star jammer Strawberry Deathcake, and OKRG’s Anomille. Phil Arnold also recaps the bout over at Roller Derby Is Sport.

In a rematch of the two teams who battled for the 2007 Detroit Derby Girls championship, the runners-up of 2007, the Devil’s Night Dames, outscored last season’s champs, the Pistolwhippers, to win a wild shootout by a 151-138 score. While this season-opener featured plenty of bone-jarring hits, it also saw most lead jammers declining to call off jams after they had scored to prevent the other team’s jammer from scoring. Instead, the lead jammers almost always went around for another pass. And in spite of some fast-skating packs, the jammers were absolutely whizzing around the track at an intense pace, consistently putting up multiple scoring passes on their way to a high-scoring night.
Audio: Rusty Wheeler interviews the Dames’ Vicious Vixen
The very first jam of the game set the tone of what was to come. The Whippers’ Killbox matched up against the Dames’ Rock Candy, and the jam was scored 7-7. Then it was the Dames’ Racer McChaseHer besting lead jammer Del Bomber 9-4 with a grand slam in jam 2 to give the Dames a 16-11 lead. In the 4th jam, the Dames’ Vicious Vixen, in her first jam of the game, outscored Kat Von D’Stroya 12-4 with two grand slams. Vicious did finally call off the jam when she was floored by a vicious hit by the Whippers’ Holly Crap. That gave the Dames a 31-18 lead. In jam 7, Killbox got tossed in the box with a major penalty for wiping out the Dames jammer Dire Skates on a large hit, but it allowed the Dames’ Honey Suckit to get lead jammer and score a 4-0 jam. After 12 jams total, the 1st period ended in favor of the Dames, 49-40.

The second period was even more high-scoring than the first. The Dames worked to get their fans in a frenzy by roaring their slogan “Burn it down!” but it was the Whippers who were on fire to start the period. In the 1st jam, the Dames lost their lead jammer, Lady Macdeath, to the box, so the Whippers’ Honey Suckit then proceeded to rack up three grand slams on her way to a 16-0 jam. Honey adroitly didn’t call the jam with the opposition being jammerless, but skated hard for the full two minutes, even passing on the inside right at the very end of the jam to score a couple of more points. That put the Whippers in front for the first time in the game, 56-49. The 2nd jam was Killbox vs. Racer again, and that jam was a 12-12 affair. But then instead of burnin’ it down, the Dames put out the Whippers fire in the next three jams, outscoring the Whippers 11-0 to regain the lead at 72-68. Vicious Vixen pulled off another outstanding jam for the Dames in jam 6, outscoring Diesel Doll 13-0 with two grand slams, to make it 85-73 in favor of the Dames. But the Whippers weren’t through. Killbox scored a 10-0 jam over Racer in jam 8 when Racer went to the box, cutting the Dames lead to 85-84. Jam 9 saw the Whippers’ Diesel Doll outscore Vicious Vixen 7-4 to put the Whippers back in front 91-89. Unfortunately for the Whippers, Diesel was sent to the box immediately after the jam, as apparently she had picked up a 4th minor penalty. In the ensuing 10th jam of the 2nd period, the Whippers were sans jammer and the Dames’ Rock Candy scored a 3-0 jam to once again flip the score to the Dames favor, 92-91. Then Racer McChaseHer continued to bedevil the Whippers, storming to a 9-0 jam in jam 11 to give the Dames the lead, 101-91. There was one final jam in the period, but with only 30 seconds on the clock there was no scoring to close the period with the Dames holding a 10 point lead.
