You! Yes, You! Bring color to the new DNN logo!

Well along into a pretty substantial site structure and engine overhaul, we have struck a serious obstacle: we here at DNN suck at colors. We’ve got an awesome new logo courtesy of Nashville Rollergirls’ Slugs Bunny, and we’re just a couple color choices away from getting the new tools skinned up and ready to rock, but we’re facing the facts: we need your help.

Artists of the derby world, if you love DNN and want to help us make it even better, now is your time. Please, take this:

DC Rollergirls Host All-Day Scrimmage April 19th

April 19th is fixin’ to be a big day for derby out on the eastern side of the continent — there’s high-level WFTDA action in New York as 9th-ranked Philly takes on 5th-ranked Gotham, there’s very rare double-gender double-header action in Massachusetts as Pioneer Valley’s Dirty Dozen takes on Diamond City Death Kings and Pioneer Valley’s Western Mass Destruction battles the Diamond City Scream Queens, and up over the border there’s the Beast of the East, a 16-team, all-day, all-Canadian (!) tournament in Montreal.

However, if you’d rather skate than spectate, it might behoove you to set course for the Dulles Sportsplex in northern Virginia, where the DC Rollergirls will be hosting a free all-day scrimmage event. DC skater Helena Handbag passes along the following details:

It is basically just a big day of pick up scrimmages, much like the Flamingo Banks thing at Rollercon. Just bring a black and a white shirt and line up. We have room for 2 tracks and have invited everyone we can think of from GA to MA. EVERYONE is welcome.
 
We have a block of hotel rooms about 2 miles away ($55 a night) and also rollergirls willing to house for those who need to stay over. It is at Dulles Sportsplex, 2-9pm on Saturday, April 19. The surface is sport court, we will be playing WFTDA 2.1.1.
 
Derby-owned skate shop Black Eyed Susan will be there and leagues are welcome to bring merch to trade or sell. Skaters must have current USARS to participate. And oh ya, it is FREE! We just wanted to do something fun - no complicated registration, just come play derby.

(Incidentally, on February 25th, DC became the newest inductee into the now 53-leagues-strong Women’s Flat Track Derby Association — for those keeping track at home, it took the DC Rollergirls approximately two years to secure representation, while regular DC residents are entering their 232nd year without representation. Derby wins again.)

Men’s Derby Conference Set For April 5th in NYC

On the heels of the Pacific Northwest’s recent Throwdown in the Sound men’s tournament comes signs of increasing boy-derby organization in the Northeast — Massachusetts’ Pioneer Valley Dirty Dozen, New York Shock Exchange and Baltimore’s Harm City Homicide (of which your humble correspondent is a member) have formed a loose alliance by the name of the Men’s Derby Coalition and released a short open letter to the derby community in leading up to the Eastern Men’s Derby Conference (or, as I’ve been calling it, DudeCon.) In Bazooka Joe’s words, from the letter:

Over the coming months and years HCH, NYSE and PVRD will continue to devote our time and energy to the positive expansion of Flat Track Roller Derby. Though it is a bit premature to speak of a national organization, we are in early stages of coalescing the existing men’s Derby concerns around the country to form a constructive environment for new male teams. In keeping with this effort, our three clubs will offer our support to help any and all developing men’s leagues learn the game, handle logistics and gain exposure.
 

First on the agenda for our emerging group is a small men’s Derby summit to be held in New York City on Saturday, April 5th. This event will consist of a few organized scrimmages, some open pick-up games, a bit of training and a whole lot of brainstorming & discussion. Tickets will not be sold to the general public, but interested Rollerfolk are invited to come and meet the fellows and watch the action on the track. Derby Artist Whiskey 7 Portrait Fundraiser

Normally, we here at DNN try to keep the focus on the action on the track, but here’s something that’s worth looking into … rarely do you get to support a good cause AND get something totally awesome in return. One of the highest-profile and most prolific derby poster artists is out to change that, though: Whiskey 7, aka Athena Barbital, skater for Sin City. We recently found this over on Whiskey’s Myspace page:

So I broke my leg and ankle in 3 places playing derby and I’m thousands upon thousands of dollars in the hole. It happened RIGHT after the company I was working for closed and I had a lapse in insurance (of course)!

I can’t walk (or work) until April and I need your help!

Donate $100 and I will create a custom portrait of you, your friend, or teammate!

Your portrait can contain any catchphrase, be in your team colors, or include any particular quirks, character traits, or props that capture who you are!

You will need to:

-submit a high res (300dpi) photo of yourself

-and any other ideas that makes you (or your friend) who you are!

Each portrait includes an 8.5″x11″ and a 4″x6″closeup.

You will get a nice little package to download that includes high res files to print, and also formatted for use on the web.

Derby name registry prepares for major purge

Here’s an item of interest for anyone with a derby alias: Arizona Roller Derby’s Paige Burner, the driving force and registrar extraordinaire behind the International Rollegirls’ Master Roster, posted a notice to roller_girls yesterday warning of the list’s upcoming major purge of inactive names.

While names have been dropped from the list on a piecemeal basis over time since its inception, this is the first substantial cleanup. Coming off the 11,059 name list will be 516 names released by the registering leagues as “no longer active.”

Here’s the text of the notice:

The following names will be deleted from the roster this week.

1. If your name is on here and it should not be, you need to let me know ASAP (masterroster@gmail.com)

2. Remember, if you are a league hopper, it is not my responsibility to keep track of your ass. If you don’t want to get deleted LET ME KNOW WHEN YOU MOVE!!!!

3. If there is a name on here that you want make sure your league wrangler grabs it before someone else does.

Paige has maintained the name registry almost singlehandedly since taking it over from its originator, Texas Rollergirls‘ Hydra. We checked in with Paige via email to catch up on the state of the registry.
