SANTA FE, NM — WFTDA’s 17th-ranked Duke City’s offense got off to a slow start in their first interleague action in four months, but their defense was rock-solid all evening long as they easily handled non-WFTDA West Texas, 149-31.
The first jam would turn out to have the highest total score of the whole bout, as Duke City’s leadoff jammer Muffin put up 8 points to 7 for WTRD’s Marie LaRolle. Both teams seemed to have trouble adjusting to an exceptionally slippery tile surface that made sharp turns and acceleration through turns very difficult.
While Duke City’s Kamikaze Kim followed up the opener with an 8-0 over Hotwhlzz that made the course Duke City 16, West Texas 7, that was the end of the scoring for the next four jams. Three of them ended early as WTRD lead jammers called the jam upon losing the advantage, but one of them would be an epic full-length double shutout as neither DCD’s Punchkin Pie nor WTRD’s Cool Rockin’ Rolletta would be able to start a scoring pass.
DNN contributor Moose Ondaluce is once again back with a Moosecast from Austin, Texas, where the local TXRG team Honky Tonk Heartbreakers went up against visiting Tornado Alley on April 6.
In this Moosecast, Moose interviews Heartbreakers captain Mary Lou Threaten and leading scorer Belle Starr, TARG captain Ivanna Hurtem and leading scorer 9 Killameter, along with TXRG announcers Chip Queso, Jim “Koolaid” Jones and Dee Filer. Bonus sitdowns with TXRG Hot Rod Honeys veterans Rice Rocket and Cat Tastrophe, TXRG Hustlers captain Curvette, KCRW transfer (and new Hustler) Fearlys!
Reports are coming in from this weekend’s groundbreaking “Throwdown In The Sound” men’s derby tournament in Puget Sound, Washington — a round robin between the hosting Puget Sound Derby Outcasts, the Dallas Deception, Twin City Terrors (from St. Paul, Minnesota) and Diamond City Death Kings (from Wilkes-Barre, PA). Men’s flat-track has been slowly increasing in visibility from halftime entertainment to 30 minute pre-game expos to full bouts, but Throwdown stands as the very first all-men’s flat-track tournament.
The hometown Puget Sound went through the tourney undefeated, besting Diamond City in the championship bout 83-41 to take the title.
Final standings:
1. Puget Sound Derby Outcasts (3-0)
2. Dallas Deception (3-1)
3. Diamond City Death Kings (1-2)
4. Twin City Terrors (0-4)
Cambridge Community Television has put together a very impressive half-hour documentary on the Boston Derby Dames, featuring appearances by league founders Ivana Clobber (who has since moved to Kansas City) and Sarah Doom, along with skaters Maura Buse, Harlot Fevah, Shelby Shattered, Triple Deck-Her, Dreadnought, Xena Paradox and others … and even better, you can view the whole thing online!
As always, DNN stands up and cheers whenever media coverage of derby goes pleasingly in-depth instead of painfully boilerplate, so don’t be shy about stopping by CCT’s site and leaving a comment to congratulate them on a job very well done.
The mighty Moose Ondaluce brings us a heaping helping of Southern derby action from last weekend. First up, here’s the video recap from Dallas’ doubleheader with Northwest Arkansas, featuring interviews with Dallas announcer Meatpie, NWA announcer Bob Breckenridge, Killbillies captain Dimah Darling, Backwoods Betties captain Jesster Riot, Dallas captain Ali Gorey, and the top scoring jammers from all four teams — Anita Riot (Dallas), Mellow Yellow (Killbillies), Blonde Ice (Backwoods Betties), and Postal Penny (Death Row Rumblers.) Special extra guests include Texas superfan Phil Arnold of Roller Derby Is Sport, and some dorky, mumbling ref who has some derby website.
Also, action from Sunday’s bout between Green Country and Central Arkansas, with Central Arkansas captain Krispy, Green Country captain Krankee Yankee, Central Arkansas top jammer Bruise Whisperer, and Green Country top jammer Rosie the Wrecker. Additionally, Green Country ref Hailey Hawkeye provides a quick primer on referee hand signals.
DNN contributor and announcer-at-large Moose Ondaluce is back with some pre- and post-bout interviews from Tornado Alley’s most recent bout. This episode features Grimmhilda, Saracidal, Anomellie and Demon Doll from the victorious Valkyrie Vixens and Ivanna Hurtem, Frankie Facebreaker and GoldieKnox from Cell Block 9. Also watch for Coach Pain from the Central Oklahoma Roller Derby Association and announcers Ray the XXX-ican (Green Country) and Mel Gitsum (Tornado Alley), and rules nerds will want to take special notice of an appearance by Hard Ass Brass, guest reffing from Green Country, who explains a unique Tornado Alley interpretation of the split pack rule.
DNN contributor Moose Ondaluce sends along some pre-and-post bout interviews from Omaha’s recent 103-82 victory over Green Country, featuring sit-downs with Green Country’s Elektra Violette and Rosie the Wrecker, Omaha’s Daisy Mayhem and Ima Firestarter, fellow announcers Senor Peligro and Ray the XXX-ican, and Green Country coach “Clean” Chuck Stillwell.
The most highly trained and nationally acclaimed journalists and editors from the Paper of Record take a swing at writing a roller derby lede. Surely they will come up with a unique way of grabbing reader interest, something that throws off the old tired lede template, something clever and different and … oh, nevermind.
By day, Jennifer Donovan works as an astronomer, listening for the faintest whispers from atoms in deep outer space, the tracings of movement in galaxies millions of light-years from Earth.
But it is nighttime. And in an abandoned cigar factory on a deserted street in Astoria, Queens, Jennifer Donovan, the astronomer, has become Luna Impact, roller derby chick.
Enough carping, though: you don’t get too much more mainstream news-worthy than the NYT, so this is a moment for derby to be proud of. Also check the video, featuring interviews with the Bronx Gridlock’s Ginger Snap and Brigitte Barhot, the Queens of Pain’s Cheapskate, and GGRD head ref Mr. Rawk. Not too shabby (even if a subtitle stating there are currently 48 leagues active in roller derby undershoots the real total by about 150 percent…)
The Bronx Gridlock cabbies challenge the dominating Queens of Pain this Saturday for the Gotham Girls Roller Derby Golden Skate Championship Trophy. Sovereign Suzy Hotrod intends to lead the two-time defending champion Queens of Pain on a path towards a three-peat, but head dispatcher Ginger Snap might have something to say about it. Last year it was Queens that crushed Bronx’s first-season dreams, beating them by one single point in the semi-finals; this year, Bronx will stop at nothing to steal the crowns and end the reign of Queens in Gotham.
The Queens of Pain roll into the bout sporting a 2-1 record, having had little trouble disposing of the Manhattan Mayhem 179-77 in August and the Brooklyn Bombshells 122-76 in July. The Bronx is 3-0 on the season, but their path to perfection hasn’t been without a few potholes. While they did cruise in their most recent bout, a 144-98 win over the Brooklyn Bombshells, they nearly squandered a 35 point lead in July when they faced off against the Manhattan Mayhem, managing to hold for a dramatic 101-99 win. Meanwhile, the seesaw GGRD season-opener went 118-107 for Bronx over Queens, and as the derby fates would have it, this matchup will be the season closer as well.
The Gridlock jamming fleet of Bonnie Thunders, Beatrix Slaughter, Brigitte Barhot, and rookie Luna Impact expose themselves to the whips and paddles of Ana Bollocks and Donna Matrix while the Queens’ point scoring army of Suzy Hotrod, Cheapskate, Scarlet Rage and rookie Tera Dyketyl face the Bronx’s relentless pivot Kandy Kakes and destiny’s problem child, Beyonsláy.
The Gridlock’s Beyonslay puts a tremendous hit on Queens jammer Suzy Hotrod in the first Bronx/Queens matchup of the season.
Expect tears to punctuate the end as original Queens of Pain girls, Joey Hardcore and co-captain Rolleta Lynn, have announced their retirement following this final bout of the 2007 season. Queens will seek additional inspiration from a special appearance at the Championship by the reclusive Greta Turbo, who is out with two spiral bone fractures in her leg. Bronx counters sentiment with insanity as the unpredictable Pop Rox returns for what may just be her last Gotham game.
UPDATE: The Gridlock dethrone the Queens of Pain, 95 to 90 (full recap to come).
