"Whip It" Gets A Release Date
Up till right now we'd been hearing vague targets like "mid-summer" or "early fall" as release dates for Drew Barrymore's Whip It flick, but via movie blog Rope Of Silicon, here's the first hard date we've heard: October 9. Assuming that this movie starts getting promoted about a month before its release, that means we'd start seeing ads in early September ... and the first of the four consecutive WFTDA regional tournaments, the Easterns, kick off on September 11. Just a little something to think about ...

Fantastic timing...
Maybe they did it on purpose? Or maybe it's just a happy coincidence? Either way, great promotion opportunity for every league in the US and beyond.
SMART!!!!!!

I heard the original date was June 12th, which would have been B. O. suicide. Clearly now I think the movie MAY make $30M.
The Original GGRDonald
too bad Hell On Wheels never got a wide release.
I could be wrong but I
I could be wrong but I really really dont think that this is gonna suck.
racer and i will be signing
racer and i will be signing autographs together at a TBA location... she as princess slaya in the movie, and me, princess slay-ya (so what if the character is not based on me).
no doubt it will be a super special event with lots of tears and cameras and flowers.
and we will both be flown in by air force 1.
i can"t wait
all lies by the way, but i do hope the film is great
I've had the opportunity to
I've had the opportunity to read the script and i thought it was pretty decent...
good timing or...
..industry decision. Whip It is a bit of boutique subject matter- (not to imply that tickets sales won't be huge, and the response we feel will be noticeable, I doubt it not. Influx of newbs, anyone?). They may not wish to compete with summer blockbusters...but there's NO accidents in Hollywood marketing.
Squadistic since 2005
They're certainly likely to
They're certainly likely to sell more tickets because of Ellen Page than Roller Derby.
I think you're gonna like this flick!
Hey everybody! I was an extra for a few days of filming the roller derby scenes in Detroit. I think all you roller girls will approve. A lot of realistic action and fight scenes. Most of the actresses did their own skating & stunts & had the bruises to prove it; even Drew Barrymore & little Ellen Page. These scenes really rock & kick ass! They borrowed a new banked track from the Austin derby girls team. They also used a lot of local derby girls from Detroit and Grand Rapids, so the stuff is real. You're gonna dig it; trust me! Detroit Denny
*correction*
Actually the track used is a brand new track from the Red Dirt Rebellion Rollergirls in Oklahoma City! I could be wrong about this bit, but the RDRR track is the newest banked track in the nation, and the 7th in existance in the U.S. It's an awesome track, once it was shipped back and put together, the girls hosted an open house and invited the local leagues to skate on it!

It's also a "Kitten Track"
The track was designed for RDRR by the LA Derby Dolls' master builder, James "Bitchy Kitten" Jones. I believe he also supervised the construction in OK, and the design is updated from that used on the LADD track (more durable than LADD's at this time, supposedly the same high/fast bank, a lot of safety features added that aren't in old school tracks).
If it's all BK says it is, it may still be in use by someone 30 years from now.
You guys are correct!
Hey I skate for RDRR and what Frankie and Bustaarmov said is correct! We're super excited about actually seeing the movie!!! Our girls worked their ASSES off to get the track built in time to take it apart and ship it to Detroit. Let's hope it lasts 30 years.... it wasn't cheap :)

Whip It introduction
DoctorPaul aka ThusSayethMe.com
Chicago is the birthplace of Roller Derby, a fact of which any derby fan should be reverently aware! And, the Windy City Rollers are the second place WFTDA league in the country, behind Gotham, and no doubt will be first place after this year's nationals. Sooooo, I think Drew Barrymore is missing a bet if she doesn't appear at the UIC Pavilion during a WCR inter-league bout to promote the film, and I think WCR is missing a bet if someone in the league isn't pursuing that idea. At least, thus sayeth me.
