Music Sunday: Tootie's Raw Juice (free with t-shirt purchase)

This edition of DNN's Music Sunday features three of our favorite things: Denver Roller Dolls referee Tootie Tinwhistle*, a badass mix cd, and Official DNN Outfitter Wicked Skatewear. Now, don't get us wrong, the shirt is cool and all, but this feature is about music, and we've got a few things to say about Tootie's Raw Juice. A bit of background: Tootie dropped a preview copy on us this summer, just in time for the long overnight trek to RollerCon, 589 desert miles from Albuquerque (the return trip feels more like a thousand). This disc quickly became our go-to soundtrack of the road.

After a rousing intro of rapid-fire mixes, Tootie lays a driving beat under a comprehensive tour of dance music, moving from strings to sax to synth, eventually delivering a smooth cut from the Go-Gos to Fanny Pack (!). One ill-advised detour absent a beat through Irene Cara is quickly forgotten as the second act takes off again, but it's in the second half that Tootie really starts doing some of that DJ shit.

Hints and snippets of other hits dance through the foreground as Boys II Men gives way to ABC, and while any student of the 90's just knows what's coming next, nothing can prepare you for the way Tootie teases it

then drops you RIGHT OFF A CLIFF into the loving embrace of Poison. Exquisite.

The rest of the disc brings a satisfying resolution to the experience, but you'll never remember exactly what it consists of, because that BBD build and break just had its way with you and you're no longer paying attention. I'm telling you, you want it.

* The Denver Roller Dolls website notes the following care instructions: "Tootie gets a half can of wet food mixed in with a scoop of dry. You need to let him out 30 minutes after you feed him. If you start rubbing his belly, he will make a very sad face if you stop :( And we’ve tried everything, but his butt just smells that way."
