There was a segment on that program a few months' back about the notorious brown M&M caveat in Van Halen's rider. Showing the band to be far smarter than I would have ever credited "Diamond Dave" with being, they purposely did it as a means of checking to make sure the laborers hired to set up the stage for their shows could be bothered to even read their contract and rider.
They had giant 80's rock stages and scaffolds and lighting equipment and such that could hurt someone if assembled improperly. If they saw brown M&Ms, then they made sure someone who put the stage together double checked the stage assembly line by line by line. It wasn't pretentious rock ego, it was their canary in the coal mine.
