Roller Derby in the Sports Page
Humboldt I guess has been blessed. Since our season started we only are in the sports page and on the local sports news updates.
The sports writters come and they do not write about our outfits, what we do during the day, etc..
Just plain ol'stats. I think as the sport progresses they will cover more pack work but in the mean time the Jammers are their focus with occasional mention of the blockers.
They even let us write a story about our first away game and ran it for us.
We are taking out a huge ad in that paper to thank all of our support crew and I guess I will ad a big thanks to the local media!
Update
As of today, the poll shows 96% (or 1,296 people) clicking YES for the Oregonian to cover roller derby. Only 4% (or 53 losers) have voted NO. And you thought elections were over on November 5th. Go and vote NOW! Link is above where Hurt says "Get going." So do it now and let the poor man get cooking on his wedding plans, for God's sake!!!

I'm not voting...
... because I'm not Oregonian. I wouldn't want them deciding what goes in my newspaper either. But that doesn't stop me from dropping disdainful comments over there.
I see your point, Statsi...
... but if the Oregonian starts covering derby, it'd help us make a case for the Inky and DN to cover Nationals here in Philly next year!!! I say vote...
Hymen
Yes
Regardless of where I live, I voted yes because derby is a sport.
We were stuck in "Lifestyle" forever. That finally changed Oct. 26th when the Journal did a pre-Portalnd write-up... in the frikkin' sports section.
Duke City Derby
no venue, no fans, no season, no problem
A way to get future coverage...
...would be to send a really well-produced and edited DVD from nationals, and/or the regional tourneys, to media outlets in the cities where upcoming tournaments will be held. (This is a suggestion from the producer of this year's "Roller Derby Revival" piece on SportsCenter.)
