Weekend Preview: 7/7/2012

Top WFTDA / MRDA Action

MRDA: (4 MRDA) Puget Sound @ (1 MRDA) YMMD -- See DNN's Feature Preview.

(9) Philly @ (12) Charm City -- See DNN's Feature Preview.

(10) Kansas City @ (6) Bay Area -- Even though Kansas City and Bay Area were both original members of the WFTDA when it was founded with 30 members in 2005, they've never actually met on the track before. Kansas City is 4-2 on the year, with their toughest win being over Montreal in April (KCRW won by 31); Rocky Mountain and Denver both whomped Kansas City by about 100 points each last month. Bay Area has had less action this year, but did better when they also faced DRD and RMRG; DRD swamped BAD by 138 points in the season opener for both teams, but BAD got a 47-point win over Rocky the next day. BAD is a favorite here, but not an overwhelming one. Textcast coverage courtesy of Bay Area Derby Girls begins at 7:30 Pacific on Saturday, July 7.

(25) Arch Rival @ Nashville -- Arch Rival reappeared on the DNN Power Rankings today after a lengthy absence and gets tested immediately by a league that was #19 as recently as April. Though Nashville recently lost one of their biggest impact skaters in Ramb0 Samb0, they might still pose a threat to Arch Rival, who had a strong June overall but only beat out the previous #25, Houston, by 21 points. No live coverage scheduled.

NW Junior Derby Championships

In the largest-ever event of its kind, 5 junior derby teams -- hosting Kitsap, Seattle Derby Brats, Emerald City Junior Gems, Rose City Rosebuds and I-5 Rollergirls -- head to Port Orchard, WA for a two-day double elimination tournament. The Rosebuds come in as the top seed. Preview with rosters & interview by Elwood Bruise; tournament bracket.

Bionic v. Tilted Thunder

@Colorado Springs. We're all excited for this one down here!

that was awesome

If there was one bout I've seen in person this year that should have been on DNN but wasn't, it was TTRB vs. Team Bionic last night. It was outstanding play by both teams, with so many lead changes in the first two periods I could barely see straight by halftime. The first half went to TTRB on skillful play and finesse. The second half went to Bionic on endurance and speed.

And you know that flat track tie game fiasco everyone's talking about? This bout ended on an even weirder note. First it appeared to end normally, and both teams did their victory laps and high-fived all the fans who rushed to the track. But then the announcers said that due to weirdness of the banked track special last jam rules, they needed to do one more jam, so could everyone step back 5 feet from the track. By then, drunken fans were piling onto the track proper and skaters were leaving, and the officials apparently decided there's no way to do one more jam. So everyone just called it quits and went to the neon cowboy bar.
