Weekend Preview: 6/15/2012
Top Action
(4) Windy City @ (13) Minnesota -- See DNN's Feature Preview.
Rat City @ LADD (Saturday); (10) Rat City @ Angel City (Sunday) -- Rat City battles both of Los Angeles' derby teams -- the banked-track LA Derby Dolls and WFTDA league Angel City -- when they come to town. Angel City, currently ranked 8 in the West region while Rat is ranked 5, will be particularly eager to put up a good showing after their last bout, a surprising 145-141 loss to 15W Wasatch. Rat City @ LADD live on DNN courtesy of the LA Derby Dolls; coverage begins at 8pm Pacific on Saturday, June 16. Rat City @ Angel City live on DNN courtesy of Angel City Derby Girls; coverage begins at 1:15pm Pacific on Sunday, June 17.
Maine @ (20) Boston -- Maine, currently just outside the cutoff for the playoffs at 11E, must get a win in their Saturday game against 7E Boston to have an argument for top ten. Maine has already lost to 8E Carolina, 9E Dutchland and 10E DC this year, though -- with Boston having beaten Carolina and Dutchland, a surprise win from Maine would give East voters a thorny problem indeed. In their most recent bout, Maine had a fairly narrow margin of victory over 14E Suburbia, winning 227-199. Boston also plays 12E Providence on Sunday. No live coverage scheduled.
Blue Ridge @ Tallahassee -- Unranked Blue Ridge didn't play their first WFTDA sanctioned bout until March 17, but they've got a good shot at debuting high enough to make this year's South Central playoffs. That March bout was a 2 point loss to current 9SC Jacksonville; a win this weekend against 10SC Tallahassee would put them right in the middle of a scramble that also includes Mid-Iowa and Duke City. No live coverage scheduled.
Mid-Iowa @ (9) Kansas City -- Mid-Iowa, like Blue Ridge, is fairly new to the WFTDA scene but has strong results that might carry them into the playoffs in their first year of eligibility. So far they're undefeated with a 5-0 record in sanctioned action, including a 186-182 squeaker over 7SC Omaha; two weeks ago, they put up an eye-opening total when they squashed Kansas City's B team 343-41. KCRW's all-stars are still big favorites in this match, but Mid-Iowa looks to be developing into a real threat to most of the South Central's teams. No live coverage scheduled.
Klash in the Kootenays
This three-day elimination tournament brings together eight Canadian teams -- West Kootenays, Okanagan, Terminal City, Deathbridge, Red Deer, Calgary, E-Ville and Oil City. Live all weekend on DNN courtesy of Canuck Derby TV, AMJ Productions, and West Kootenay Women's Roller Derby.
