Q2 Homestretch 2012: East Region

  • 6E Montreal lost twice to 4E Steel City in 2011, but have a chance to pull themselves up the rankings when the teams meet again on June 9. Photo: Neal Humphris.

With the second quarter WFTDA rankings period closing at the end of the month, June's bouts represent the final chances for teams to solidify their seeding for the September and October regional tournaments -- or claim an invite by breaking into their region's top ten.

This week, DNN takes a four-part look at how the playoff picture is shaping up over the final five weeks of the WFTDA "regular season," starting in the East.

Leaders of the Pack

If history is any guide, the top three spots in the region are unlikely to change following June's results. Although 1E Gotham hasn't been challenged at all this year in their two enormous regional wins over low-ranked Long Island (630-65) and Connecticut (505-19), the 2011 WFTDA champs seem to be pretty much a lock to take the top seed in the East playoffs for the 5th year in a row.

The only threat in their way will be 2E Philly, who they'll face in Philadelphia on June 9. While the Gotham / Philly rivalry is one of the oldest in modern derby –they first played in October 2006 – it's been pretty much all Gotham from the start; Gotham holds a 9-1 advantage in the series.

What's more, the last two Gotham / Philly matches have been the most lopsided -- Gotham beat Philly 267-34 and 252-97 in 2011. With Gotham currently on a 17-game winning streak, a victory for Philly on June 9 would assuredly be the biggest upset of the year.

3E Charm City has come quite close to Philly in their last couple of meetings, losing by 26 and 8 points in 2011, but this year Charm City hasn't played a regional schedule that gives them a good argument for passing Philly before June 30. They smashed 13E Queen City 440-62 in their March season opener, but they'll face tougher competition near the end of the month when they face 6E Montreal and 7E Boston at the East Coast Derby Extravaganza. Still, though, Charm will should come in as a strong favorite over the weekend even though they've seen dramatic roster turnover since their 2011 campaign. In 2011, Charm defeated Montreal by 122 and Boston by 103.

Key Regional Matchups

June 2: 10E DC @ 16E Dominion
June 9: 1E Gotham @ 2E Philly
June 9: 4E Steel City @ 6E Montreal
June 9:: 11E Maine @ 14E Suburbia
June 16: 11E Maine @ 7E Boston
June 17: 12E Providence @ 7E Boston
June 23: 16E Dominion vs 25E Lehigh Valley (ECDX)
June 23: 3E Charm City vs 6E Montreal (ECDX)
June 24: 11E Maine vs uE Ithaca (ECDX)
June 24: 16E Dominion vs 24E New Hampshire (ECDX)
June 24: 3E Charm City vs 7E Boston (ECDX)

Battle for the Middle

Things get a little less predictable after the top three. June 9th's match between 4E Steel City and 6E Montreal has the potential to shake things up a little bit. Steel City is a solid favorite on paper as Steel City beat Montreal twice in 2011 (144-121 in April and 134-88 at the East Playoffs), and key injuries and departures on the Montreal team have left them looking slightly weaker than they did last year. However, should Montreal get the upset here, they'd have good momentum to take into their ECDX matchup with Charm City and potentially crack the region's top 3.

The result of Steel City / Montreal will be of particular interest to 9E Dutchland. The surprising May 5 result between Steel City and Dutchland, in which Steel City won by just 6 points at 146-140, could potentially give Dutchland a chance to break past Montreal. On the other hand, Dutchland also has a close head-to-head loss to 7E Boston (172-153) on May 19 that could keep them pinned below Boston no matter what happens between Steel City and Montreal.

8E Carolina looks to currently be perfectly ranked, as they lost to Boston by slightly less than Dutchland did (149-140), also in May. Neither Dutchland nor Carolina can further affect their own fate in June, as neither have any more regional games scheduled.

5E London hasn't played any US teams at all this year and will have to wait and see how the WFTDA voters react to that; their record-setting 667-18 win over unranked Auld Reekie is their only result of the year so far, though they'll get another one in against Bear City (Berlin) on the same weekend of the ECDX.

Dark Horses and Potential Spoilers

11E Maine reached the playoffs as the 9th seed last year, but fell behind London following the playoffs and lost a key matchup to 10E DC in April, 197-131. That puts Maine in a must-win situation for all three of their June games; they're already favored on June 9 against 14E Suburbia and June 24 against unranked Ithaca, but their playoff hopes hinge on upsetting 7E Boston on June 16. Boston defeated Maine twice in 2011, including a 107-point rout during the playoffs -- even with Boston suffering continued roster upheaval in 2012, it'll be an uphill battle for Maine.

12E Providence will have a chance to play spoiler when they play Boston the day after Maine gets them, but while they could possibly knock Boston out of the playoff hunt by scoring what would be an enormous upset, it's hard to envision a scenario in which Providence could punch their way into the top ten. They've already lost in head-to-head matchups with 15E Connecticut and 16E Dominion.

If Boston survives their Maine / Providence weekend as expected, it'll be up to 16E Dominion to come up with the wins that would change the playoffs invite list. Dominion faces 10E DC at home on June 2; the teams have something of a odd history, with one 100+ point blowout for each team and one very close 95-77 win for Dominion. It's been two years since they last met, though, and both rosters look quite different these days. Should Dominion manage to get the upset win over DC, they'd probably still need quite convincing wins over 25E Lehigh Valley and 24E New Hampshire at ECDX to back up an argument for the bottom playoff spot.

DC/Dominion is one of those

DC/Dominion is one of those ones where I wish I could be in two places at once... I'll be working River City/Rocktown, but having watched both DC and Dominion skate this year, it should be a good game.

Going out on a limb

I'm going to say it now, Montreal takes down Steel City.

Key matchup

I recognize that you can't list all matchups and call them key, but in my extremely biased opinion Saturday (ECDX) at 6:30PM Montreal vs. Charm City is also very significant.

Oh geez, absolutely.

Can't believe I missed that the first time; I've updated the article accordingly. Need more interns.

out on a limb here

Im going to go ahead and say that the number 10 spot is going to be a struggle and a tough matchup with Providence, Dc and maine really doing good this year.

In another tree

Unless someone knows about an injury or transfers happening at DC, DC has a solid lock on the 10 spot. DC will pummel Dominion.

Dominion/DC

If it comes down to Dominion and DC, the spot should go to DC. Dominion lost to unmentioned East team Columbia early in the season 223 to 88, which is left off their schedule for some reason. A similar lost was had by Dominion against Dutchland 262 to 96 in April.

The Dominion/Columbia game

The Dominion/Columbia game was unsanctioned and, as such, not able to be considered for ranking. In terms of sanctioned losses, they have #9 Dutchland and #18 Cape Fear in the loss column, and the Cape Fear loss was extremely close (182-179). I do think it's hard to hold the Dutchland loss against them, since Dutchland is really playing above their ranking as evidenced by the six point loss to Steel City.

If Dominion convincingly beats DC, then they should definitely be in the running as they would have beaten #10 and #12 (Providence, which was a come from behind win as they were trailing by 50 with 15 minutes to go). But the key word there is convincingly... it would have to be more than a couple of jams' worth of points. DC's track record this season is strong enough for #10 right now, and even if they lose a close game to Dominion, they should keep that #10. Unless Maine beats Boston, then everything's gone asunder. :)

Philly & Gotham: A Love Story

Gotham, the team you love to hate, and hate to love. I say this with the highest esteem possible! These ladies redefine great regularly; but dammitall... can't Philly just catch them on a bad night one time. The Philly and New York city rivalry is as old as sports itself. Philadelphia is the middle child of the east coast; but we can pull a rabbit outta the hat once in a while; you gotta believe!!! I pray and wish for a win but barring that, a competitive game with no injuries. GO PHILLY!!!

Boston ranked LOWER than Steel?

In the recent bout against Dutchland, Boston Massacre dominated the entire bout, led by 60 in the middle of the second half, and after two top jammers suffered injury late in the 2nd, eased off the gas and defeated Dutchland by a deceptively-close margin of 20 points. When Boston lost to Naptown, it was by 51 points, VERY comparable to Montreal's loss to them (46 pts). (Steel lost to Naptown by a wider margin than did Boston: 54 points.)

Considering Naptown defeated Dutchland by over 200, and Steel only beat Dutchland by 6, and Steel has no notable (wide margin) wins against competitively-ranked teams, logically, how can it be that Boston is ranked lower than Steel, according to DNN?

??

Dutchland led all but 5 mins of the first half. How is that Boston dominating the entire bout? In general using triangulation as a key way to determine ranking is sort of crazy. Given that there is no set schedule so that all teams in a region must face each other I get it I just hate it.

Re: Boston ranked LOWER than Steel?

1. Saying that your team "eased off the gas" and that this contributed to a closer margin of victory than the score shows is not only a poor reflection on your team, but totally undermines the efforts of your opposition and is not based in anything that can be proven.

2. If you are going to use the argument for your team that 2nd period injuries sustained to top jammers contributed to a closer point margin than it should or would have been otherwise, you should probably extend that same courtesy to Steel City, who was playing without 3 of their top players when they played Dutchland - not having Athena, Hurricane Heather, or The Shocker. They weren't there for the entire game, not just the second period. Didn't Lil' Paine score something like 130 points in the Ducthland v. Boston game? Hurricane Heather is akin to Lil' Paine for Steel City (dare I say better, IMO) - so does that mean without Lil' Paine Dutchland would have won by 130+ or that with Hurricane Heather Steel would have won by possibly 130+ points? I don't agree with this logic myself, but if you are going to use it for one (your) team, you should probably use it for the other as well.

3. Like Steel, Montreal played Naptown missing some very key players in Smack Daddy, Georgia W. Tush, and others. So, same logic as #2 above - if you're going to use triangulation between the teams, but give your team an excuse, you may want to consider extending that same courtesy to the other teams you mentioned.

4. Finally, what other notable wide-margin win does Boston have this season against competition? You say that Steel doesn't have any other wide-margin wins against notable competition and that's why Boston should be above them - but tell us, where is Boston's major wide-margin victory (against notable competition) this season that proves they should be placed above Steel?

Much love for Boston and Steel

Don't get me wrong, I have much love for Boston and I feel both they and Steel City are tremendously talented teams, but I need to point some things out.

I wouldn't say that Boston dominated the entire bout, it was an extremely close game the entire way through. Dutchland led BDD the first 15 jams until Lil Paine had a 30 point run causing a lead change to 78-71. The teams were separated by 5 points at the half, 86-81. This was much like when Dutchland played Steel City, where we also led the first 13 jams until SCDD pulled ahead leaving the score 74-59 at the half. Also in the Boston game, Dutchland outscored BDD 50-6 in the final 9 jams...also similar to the SCDD game where Dutchland outscored them 48-16 in the final 9. I'm not sure where the deception is in the final score for either game.

My point is that both these games were close and evenly matched, I don't envy DNN at all for having to put one above the other. I'm not sure a handful of points either way makes the difference. I'd love to see them play head to head and since they will both likely remain in the top 10, maybe we'll see it come September!

Re: Much love for Boston and Steel

Right. I don't envy DNN either. There is a lot of information that goes into this ranking system, which can def be opaque. While all regions are growing more competitive, I am particularly excited about the East this year. Not only for the 6 spots for regionals but for up and coming leagues as well. I think it will be a great year for New Hampshire Roller Derby, for example, and every spot in the top ten will be intensely fought for. I appreciate the clarification for my question.

More nitpicking : )

Is there a reason that when Boston was being used to compare Dutchland and Carolina Maine was not accounted for as well? Carolina 148 Maine 103 and Dutchland 250 Maine 75
