World Cup Bout Schedule
TORONTO, ON -- On Thursday afternoon, the roller derby world sees a first as Blood & Thunder Magazine hosts the first all-international derby tournament, the Blood & Thunder Roller Derby World Cup. 13 teams from around the globe converge on Toronto for the four-day tournament, with Thursday's action including a Team USA red/white expo scrimmage that will feature all 28 members of their extended roster (as in WFTDA interleague play, a maximum of 20 skaters per team can be rostered for the event, with 14 eligible to play in any specific game).
DNN, in conjunction with Hinckley Productions, will provide live video coverage and bout recaps all tournament long.
Thursday round-robin action starts at 5pm Eastern and continues on two tracks up to the Team USA scrimmage at 9pm (see sidebar for team groups):

Argentina VS England
Can you get hand of god in roller derby?
Sure you can
...but I think it would probably be called Forearms under the current ruleset.
You've got France in your
You've got France in your list twice - I think group B should be Germany, Australia, Finland (as indicated in the game-by-game listing).
:) so looking forward to this! And really glad both Australian games are on during normal daytime hours over here! Was that done intentionally with the draw?
Saturday Night
So are there no bouts after the 3:30 game on Saturday night? I only ask because the original calendar said Saturday would go until 8:30 PM.
??
Nope, you're right.
Games go until a 7:00 start time on Saturday. They're just not set yet, and won't be until Saturday afternoon.
Consolation rounds
The schedule above only shows the advancement rounds. There will be consolation games to determine final placement for all teams, but in the interest of avoiding incredibly unwieldy labels like "Loser of [Loser of [Winner of [Seed X vs Seed X]] vs Loser of [Loser of [Winner of [Seed X vs Seed X]]" we left those out. Don't worry, all games will be broadcast and we'll announce those games as the participants become known!
Gotcha
OK, I thought that might be the case as I thought I had seen references to "placement games". Thanks for clarifying.
I'll be on my way to the airport in 24 hours. Can't wait!! :)
brackets?
aren't these kinds of matchups easier to denote with brackets?
Sure, but
... I didn't get a hold of the actual schedule until about 3am last night, at which time the DNN Department of Visual Design was totally asleep :p
Get yer head outta yer ass and do it yerself...
Sounds like you just volunteered to do this Bates. Congratulations!
Love you coach.
Awesome!
This is awesome! So, excited to watch Team USA in action!
Too much!
Dang it! There's too much to watch. I'll be missing games Thursday and Friday because I'll be at work. I HAVE to rethink this whole work thing.
Cheering for Teams USA, Brazil, and Germany this weekend!
Brackets
Some enterprising nerds have been trying to assemble brackets; alas, 13 teams a messy bracket makes. Especially since the seeding for that will be determined based on overall performance in the Group round - in other words, the result of the first bout on Thursday does not translate into the winner and loser moving directly into slot C or D. I'm sure there will be a handy dandy bracket reflecting the seeds for the start of part two on Friday.
iPhone streaming?
Hi, will there be an option to stream, using iPhone? There was that option for the US championships, so I hope so!!!!!
The B & T World Cup will be
The B & T World Cup will be carried on DNN's justin.tv channel. I believe iPhones should work fine!
is it just me or do you have
is it just me or do you have to pay for the app for this to work? the feedback is mostly full of people saying that the app doesn't work either... if there's another way in I'd love to know otherwise I won't be able to watch over the weekend as I have to travel
Team USA Roster
Have Team USA Published their Actual Roster of 20 anywhere yet?
The Mysterious 20
I've asked the same question multiple times (and places) and have yet to see an official response. I do know that such a roster exists...but I'm thinking we may have to wait until Friday before it can be pieced together (given that only 14 will suit up for Thursday's game, right?).
Team USA's 20
The team wanted us to make it clear that for the purposes of rostering in future Team USA games, it's 28 players, and the 8 who aren't technically rostered this weekend are still part of the team. That said, here is this weekend's official 20:
Atomatrix
Bonnie Thunders
Deranged
Donna Matrix
Fisti Cuffs
Frida Beater
Joy Collision
Juke Boxx
Heather Juska
Psycho Babble
Sassy
Sexy Slaydie
Shenita Stretcher
Suzy Hotrod
Tannibal Lector
Teflon Donna
Tracy Akers
Urrkin Jerkin'
Varla Vendetta

The new Dream Team.
It looks like most of these
It looks like most of these skaters are top jammers in WFTDA interleague play.
Not a surprise
It has long been observed that excellent jammers also make excellent blockers, so it would make sense to lean your team that way. DRD's Tracy Akers is primarily a blocker these days, but has been known to bust out a fierce jam from time to time.
And Vice Versa
Excellent blockers make excellent jammers too.
Big Ups
to Captain America, aka Joy Collision, and the rest of the team. Baltimore will be cheering you on.
CANADA! CANADA! CANADA!

Archived bouts for World Cup?
Hi! Will the bouts be archived then? I might have to miss USA vs. USA tonight and am hoping I'll be able to catch it later.
love it!
GO USA!
seeding for elimination round
Have they actually not announced how they will be deciding how teams will be seeded for the elimination round. that sounds so bush league. what sport doesn't announce how the playoffs matchups will be decided until after the bouts have already been played?
Seeding for elimination round
As far as I know it never was officially explained to the fans or audience, but in talking to some of the teams, it looks like seeding is first by win-loss record, then by point spread.
So for example, assume USA, Canada, England and Australia go undefeated -
and USA won their games by a total of 700 points, Canada won by 500 points, England won by 300 points and Australia by 200 -
then the seeds would be USA 1, Canada 2, England 3, Australia 4.
Things are complicated a bit by the 4 team Group A. I believe that for the team that wins Group A, their game against the worst team in the group is not factored into the point margin calculation; for all other teams, their game against the winner of the group is not factored into the point margin calculation.
Tie break
What's the next tie breaker?
Unless I've made a mistake, Canada and England both are 2-0 and both have a Point Diff of 377.
Edit: Never mind, made a mistake.
Final ranks?
Assuming Canada beats Brazil, and I understand the description above correctly, and I didn't make any more mistakes:
1 USA
2 Canada
3 England
4 Australia
5 Sweden
6 Ireland
7 Germany
8 New Zealand
9 Finland
10 France
11 Brazil
12 Argentina
13 Scotland
Although, that's assuming Canada and Brazil only count as 2-0 and 0-2, but Sweden and France count as 2-1, 1-2.
Other options are all those bouts counts, so 3-0, 2-1, 1-2, 0-3, or they all follow the special rules so 2-0, 2-0, 1-1, 0-2. Any insight into which it is?
The other methods
The ranks from the other methods give:
1 Canada
2 USA
3 England
4 Australia
5 Sweden
6 Ireland
7 Germany
8 New Zealand
9 France
10 Finland
11 Argentina
12 Scotland
13 Brazil
1 USA
2 Canada
3 England
4 Australia
5 Sweden
6 France
7 Ireland
8 Germany
9 New Zealand
10 Finland
11 Brazil
12 Argentina
13 Scotland
Simmer Down!
Have they actually not announced how they will be deciding how teams will be seeded for the elimination round. that sounds so bush league. what sport doesn't announce how the playoffs matchups will be decided until after the bouts have already been played?
Speaking as one of the announcers and text-casters slated to start helping out at the venue this afternoon, I think they have figured all that stuff out. Whether they've made it widely available, I don't know.
We're just at day two of Something New That Hasn't Been Done Before, and despite precedent with other tourneys, Championals, invitationals, etc. sometimes these things get noodled with and changed up and not done like it was at x time with x teams.
And you know what? THIS IS THE TIME TO NOODLE. Relax. You'll get info. Eventually. This is still supposed to be fun as well as competitive and informative, y'know. Nothing is set in stone because IT'S NEVER BEEN DONE BEFORE. And THAT'S OK.
As nervous as it makes me to argue with Tara...
Sure, "an international World Cup of roller derby" has never been done before, but sports have been putting on tournaments and playoffs for a really really long time. Clearly explaining to the fans of a sport what the playoff structure for the sport is, LONG before the playoffs start, is critically important to the fan experience.
The point is not that the tournament organizers know what the seeding process is for the elimination round. The point is that the fans don't know unless they happen to know a captain or a manager from one of the teams and therefore can't watch a game with the knowledge of "Well, if we can just beat Team X, or if Team Y manages to beat Z, or if we lose to Team X by less than Team Y loses to Team Z, then we'll get to play Team Q in the playoffs, and we can TOTALLY beat them!"
Superfans LOVE that kind of speculation and games-within-games. It baffles me that roller derby consistently makes it really hard for them to get the information they need to enjoy the games on more than the most basic level.
...and, halftime is over. Back to recapping....
