2011 WFTDA North Central Region Playoffs Preview
Friday, 11am: 7NC Brewcity vs 10NC Ohio
So far in this year's tournament action, only the East's 10 seed, London, was able to win their opening game. Ohio is recently showing some fire after a few years in the wilderness, and hopes to be the second when they take on a Brewcity team that's seen some significant swings of fortune over the course of this year.
Bottom seed Ohio hasn't qualified for a regional tournament since they hosted the first-ever Eastern Regionals in 2007, and somewhat backed into this tournament with the help of a 2011 collapse from North Star. Their 11-6 record looks good on paper, but almost all of their wins were against also-rans like Bleeding Heartland, Killamazoo, Hard Knox, NEO, Demolition City and Tri-City.
However, Ohio's most recent result was a significant eye-opener as they were able to stun tournament 5 seed in a 131-105 win. Added to a better-than-expected performance against the South Central's No Coast (Ohio lost by just 5 points), it seems quite possible that Ohio could play over their heads this weekend and fight their way out of the cellar.
If Ohio's hunting for an upset, Brewcity seems a potentially vulnerable target. Although their last result was reassuring for Milwaukee fans when they solidly beat tournament 8 seed Chicago Outfit 133-80, that was a relatively high point of a rocky season. Brewcity had lost to the region's 11th ranked team Grand Raggidy just previous, and has the distinction of being the only North Central team to lose to struggling Madison this year in a 131-92 game at Midwest Brewhaha. Overall they are 4-6 on the year, with the Outfit being the toughest team they've defeated. There was a bit of a bright spot in a narrow 17 point loss to tough Naptown, but that was a very early-season result back in March and may not reflect the current strength of both teams.
The winner here has to deal with Detroit at 5:30pm the same day. Neither team has played Detroit this year, but Detroit won the most recent meetings with each team handily -- 195-47 over Brewcity in June 2010 and 105-57 over Ohio in the ancient history of January 2009.

Just re-did my media room...
...and now would like to use my Roku box to watch the bouts this weekend (been watching on my desktop, where it's as simple as clicking the URL). Anybody done this? Unlike previous years, I'm not sure this is being streamed on a Roku channel like JTV or UStream. Any suggestions?
Kinney and Wheezy
Sk8r Kinney (closet Belgian Ale lover) and Wheezy (The Wheeeeeeeeeeez) are on Cincinnati Rollergirls' roster for this weekend. Whatever roster you saw must have cut off the bottom two names.
I thought we agreed that you were gonna stop drinking cough medicine while you're writing previews, J.
(BTW, I'm bringing skates this weekend. Let's see if we con some people into letting us play some late-night, guerrilla derby this weekend... Rebels, I'm looking in your direction.)
Fixed!
Thanks. And, good luck in your nocturnal endeavors. On skates!
Minnesota is going to win the tournament. Just FYI.
Yes, I'm biased. -But that doesn't mean I'm wrong.
Where's the Minnesota-Detroit recap?
It's been a whole game and a half since then! I was so busy calling it, I forgot to experience it! :)
