Weekend Preview, August 12-14
WFTDA
The Golden Bowl (6 Bay Area vs #10 Windy City vs #11 Texas vs #13 Detroit): See DNN's Feature Preview.
#4 Denver @ #2 Gotham: Denver heads out to try their luck in Brooklyn against a Gotham squad that's been nearly untouchable this year -- Gotham has a 6-0 record with four 200+ point wins among them, and only Rose City has managed to stay within 100 (in a 147-79 Gotham win). On the other hand, while Denver hasn't been putting up such gaudy scores, they've built a 9-1 record full of wins over top-flight competition; only DNN's current #1, Oly, has been able to control them in a 189-99 Oly win in April.
This matchup is the marquee bout of the first time that New York's WFTDA and MRDA teams have ever shared a bill; the New York Shock Exchange opens this tripleheader with a game against longtime rivals Harm City Homicide (see below), and Gotham b-team Wall Street Traitors play the middle game against Suburbia's all-stars.
See feature-length preview from Thomas Gerbasi.
Saturday. Streaming online only through pay-per-view from Gotham Girls. NYSE / HCH @ 2pm, WST / Suburbia @ 4pm and Denver / Gotham @ 6pm (all times Eastern.)
#3 Rocky Mountain @ #24 London: In only their 4th WFTDA sanctioned game ever, the upstart London girls host the 2010 WFTDA champs. London has not yet won a WFTDA game but managed to snag the bottom seed in next month's Eastern Regionals based on fair performances against #12 Charm City and #14 Montreal along with a close battle against #15 Steel City in April. Meanwhile, RMRG saw a nearly year-long undefeated streak end at the hands of Oly in a June game that put Oly back in the unofficial #1 in the nation slot.
Friday, 7:30pm British Summer Time (2:30pm Eastern, 11:30am Pacific.) Live on DNN courtesy of RDUK.tv and the London Rollergirls.
#21 Boston @ #5 Rose City, #9 Rat City and Jet City: Boston kicks off a three-game weekend in Portland against Rose City on Friday, Rat on Saturday and Jet City on Sunday. Though Boston came within a game of a return trip to Championships in 2010, this year has seen significant turnover in their roster that hasn't ended yet -- longtime vet and key blocker Maura Buse retired after July's bouts against Houston and Windy City. Boston thus ventures into the Pacific Northwest a significant underdog in their bouts against Rose City and Rat City, but their game against Jet City might be a moment of truth. Last month, Jet City was disassembled by #12 Charm City 292-77, and Charm will be Boston's first-round opponent at Eastern Regionals. If Boston has trouble handling Jet City, or especially if Jet City can strike for an upset, it will not augur well for Boston's hopes at Regionals.
Friday: Boston @ Rose, 8pm. Saturday: Boston vs Rat, 8pm (undercard bout between Rose City and Rat City B-teams Axles of Annihilation and Rain of Terror at 6pm). Sunday: Boston vs Jet City, 10am. All times Pacific.
#19 Carolina @ #25 Nashville: East and South Central teams will likely be awaiting the results of this inter-regional contest with interest. Carolina has quietly been putting together a long string of enormous wins against sub-tournament competition this year, but hasn't had too many games against the level of competition they'll be facing next month at Easterns. Still, though, their 12-0 record looks imposing against Nashville's 4-3. A big Carolina win here could presage a deeper-than-expected run in Regionals for the #7 seed, but Nashville also has something to prove, having reached Championships last year but spent most of this year off or at the tail end of the Power Rankings. Carolina has another sanctioned bout on Sunday when they take on Memphis.
Saturday, 7pm Central (undercard bout between b-teams Carolina Bootleggers and Music City Brawl Stars at 5:30pm).
Arch Rival @ #8 Kansas City: On paper this bout looks like Kansas City should be a large favorite, but Arch Rival has a history of putting up better-than-expected performances against their cross-state sisters. In 2009 Kansas City barely escaped 89-80, and last year Arch Rival acquitted themselves admirably in a 40 point loss at ARRGageddon, 135-95. Both teams have been having a good 2011; 6-1 Kansas City launched themselves to their highest-ever Power Ranking with an upset win over Rat City in June and has only lost to #1 Oly, while Arch Rival has put together a 7-2 record marred by losses to up and comers Naptown and the Chicago Outfit.
Saturday, 7pm Central.
In other WFTDA action, #14 Montreal takes on Providence and Connecticut, Grand Raggidy visits Brewcity, Tallahassee goes to Jacksonville, Gold Coast takes on Hard Knox, Santa Cruz goes to Angel City, Green Mountain visits Central NY, OK Victory Dolls host Big Easy, Burning River ventures into the Chicago Outfit's lair and Hammer City hosts Killamazoo (all on Saturday, except for Montreal / Connecticut on Sunday).
MRDA
#8 MRDA Harm City Homicide @ #2 MRDA New York Shock Exchange: This is one of the longest-running rivalries in modern men's derby, going all the way back to an October 2007 expo meeting at Charm City's second home championship bout, but NYSE has defeated Homicide six times in a row by margins ranging from 222-64 at the high end to 56-35 (in a 30 minute bout) at the low. Homicide comes into this game as a significant underdog but with a considerable incentive to pull out a shocker -- with no more games scheduled against top-six MRDA teams before the second and final ranking of the season, a win or extremely strong performance here is their last chance to make an argument for inclusion in October's six-team MRDA championship tournament.
Saturday. Streaming online only through pay-per-view from Gotham Girls. NYSE / HCH @ 2pm, WST / Suburbia @ 4pm and Denver / Gotham @ 6pm (all times Eastern.)

This bout marks the return of power blocker Amanda Jamitinya to the RMRG roster, who'd missed games against Rose City and Oly on a broken leg.
Not to pick nits, but A.J. played against Detroit as well.
