Ohio Denies Demolition City, 146-108
COLUMBUS, OH --- On Saturday, August, 20th the 21-ranked team in the North Central region, the Demolition City Roller Derby team of Evansville, IN, paid a visit to the 10th ranked team, the Ohio Roller Girls. Approximately 1,300 made their way to the Lausche Building on the Ohio State Fairgrounds for Ohio’s final home bout of 2011. Ohio dominated the first half of the game to go up by 63 at the break, and although Demolition City won the second half, they couldn't erase Ohio's huge lead; Ohio won 146-108.
Ohio started fast and led 20-0 after the second jam thanks to an 18 point jam by Wendra Woman. But Godjilla, and her Demolition City teammates, looked like they were going make it a contest. DCRD held Ohio scoreless over the next five jams as they put up 23 unanswered points to lead 23-20 after the seventh jam of the bout.
Then the Ohio Roller Girls defense came roaring back.
Ohio’s veteran pack of Phoenix Bunz, Bratislava Bruiser, Handle Barz (in her final home bout), Amy Spears, Kill Basa, Dixie Heartless, Loraine Acid, Outa My Wayman, Ava Tarr and Pippi Ripyourstockings proceeded to hold the Dynamite Dolls of Demolition City scoreless over the next 11 jams.
A trio of Ohio jammers each had double-digit scoring jams during a 72-0 scoring run that demolished Demolition City. Paige Bleed put up jams of 15 and 13, Hellion BOI had her own 13 point jam and Bigg Rigg (in her first charter team action) had the biggest jam of the bout when she put up 20.
Demolition City managed to put up 9 points in the final two jams of the first half so that the score at intermission was 95-32.
The Ohio defense reasserted itself early in the second half as Demolition City was held scoreless in 6 of the first 8 jams which pushed the Ohio lead to 111-46. But Demolition City never stopped competing. The DCRD trio of jammers Godjilla, Abbs of Steel and Bittercup put on the star for all but one jam in the second half and scored 66 of the teams 76 second half points.
Demolition City held Ohio scoreless for the final four jams of the night to make the outcome more respectable for the team from Evansville. The Dynamite Dolls defense was led by Megan M Hurt, Macabrera, Bangs McCoy and their captain Shelby N Pain.
Ohio jammed eight different skaters on their way to a 38 point win, 146 - 108. They were led by Hellion BOI’s 38 points; Wendra Woman’s 30; Paige Bleed’s 28 and Bigg Rigg’s 27. Whereas Demolition City was led by the 37 points put up by Godjilla and Abbs of Steel’s 31 points.
Now a busy 10-5 in WFTDA sanctioned action, Ohio sends a mixed A/B team to Windy City this weekend to take on Windy City's B team, the Second Wind, as an undercard to the main event between #10 Windy City and San Diego. They're next in sanctioned action when they make a long-delayed return to tournament play at the North Central Regional, taking on the tournament #7 seed Brewcity in the first round. Demolition City has no more bouts scheduled for 2011 and ends a rough season 1-9, with their only victory a 325-49 pounding of the Rockford Rage.
