Weekend Preview - July 9-10, 2011
Saturday
(10) Windy City @ (21) Boston -- 5-0 Windy City attempts to keep their streak going against Boston (4-5 following a close 102-96 win over Houston on Friday night.) Although Windy's had a more successful year overall and Boston's the underdog on paper, there's reason to believe that Boston can drop a surprise here. Both teams had very close games against Montreal this year; Boston lost 112-84 in March, while Windy City won by a similar margin of 130-105 two weeks ago at ECDX. Additionally, the most recent Windy / Boston game was extremely close -- a big second-half comeback for Boston that ended in a 121-115 win for Windy City in July 2010. 7pm Eastern. (12) Charm City @ (4) Denver -- The last two times these teams met, it was very much a tale of two halves -- Denver had a tiny lead at the half but owned the final 30 minutes to win comfortably, 208-101. Denver has only dropped one game so far this year (to Oly) while claiming wins over tough top-ten competition like Rat City, Philly and Rose City (twice); overall they stand at 5-1. Charm City has had a rougher time of it as of late and is currently on a 4 game losing streak with a 5-5 record. 6:00pm Mountain; private bout. Live textcast coverage courtesy of Denver Roller Dolls pending Internet access -- check back!
DC @ GGRD Brooklyn Bombshells / PRG Heavy Metal Hookers @ GGRD Queens of Pain -- Gotham home teams go up against a home team from Philly and DC's all-stars. See full bout preview from Thomas Gerbasi. 6:30pm Eastern. These bouts will be streamed live on DNN courtesy of Gotham Girls Roller Derby.
(24) Arch Rival @ Chicago Outfit -- While it comes too late in the year to affect the seeding for the North Central tournament, this game should be a good preview of early-round action -- both teams are likely to end up between 7 and 9 when the 3Q rankings are released later this month. After opening their season with a loss to Naptown, Arch Rival has pulled off 6 convincing sanctioned wins in a row. This matchup with the Chicago Outfit is a rematch of an upset win for Arch Rival just two months ago -- ARRG took that win 155-101. The Outfit is 6-3 in WFTDA action this month, with their most recent game a loss to #25 Nashville. The leagues' B-teams face off in an opening undercard. 8:30pm Central.
Twin Cities Terrors @ Race City Rebels (MRDA) -- Twin Cities is 3-2 in MRDA action and currently ranked #7th in the MRDA, so they'll be looking for a big win here to help bolster their case to climb into the top 6 and qualify for October's MRDA championships. They've already solidly taken down MRDA #10 Race City once this year, 195-97. Race City is still looking for their first MRDA-sanctioned victory and sit at 0-6, but they have picked up non-MRDA wins against Rock City Riot, Sioux City Kornstalkers and Cowtown Butchers. Part of a men / women's doubleheader with Circle City taking on Rockford in the marquee bout. 6pm Eastern.
Sunday
(10) Windy City v Houston -- Houston is coming off the very close game against Boston on Friday night, so the result of Boston / Windy will probably indicate whether Houston has a chance to land a major upset here. Houston's had a very active year so far and run up a 10-6 record, but Tampa is still the toughest opponent they've taken down. In a scheduling quirk, 4 of those 6 losses came to Texas -- before Boston, the other was a 107-73 loss to Atlanta in May. Houston has a couple of notable transfers this year from top-ten teams -- The Angie-Christ (ex-Texas) and Windigo (ex-Bay Area). Closed bout. 10am Eastern.
Connecticut Death Quads @ Harm City Homicide (MRDA) -- While these two early MRDA teams are ranked back to back at #8 (Homicide) and #9 (Death Quads), Harm City has solidly come out on top in all of their 5 previous meetings. Thus far, Connecticut has a 2-5 record in MRDA action with very close wins over Central Mass and Race City, along with an non-MRDA victory over Infinite Mass; Homicide is 1-3 in MRDA with a win over Race City and a win against WFTDA's DC Rollergirls. 6:15pm Eastern.
In other WFTDA action, Ohio has a busy weekend with games against Omaha, No Coast and Providence (Providence also plays No Coast), and Duke City and Alamo City meet in Taos, New Mexico.
