Preview: Spring Roll (MRDA Tournament)
FORT WAYNE, IN -- Hot on the heels of reorganizing and rebranding, the Men's Roller Derby Association (formerly the Men's Derby Coalition) joins forces with the Fort Wayne Derby Girls to kick off their 2011 season in earnest with the largest men's event to date in Spring Roll 2011. Last year, the single-day two-track event featured women's bouts on one track and men's on the other; this year, Saturday remains split but action will continue on Sunday with MRDA bouts on both tracks all day long.
DNN will be streaming all bouts from both tracks at Spring Roll on Saturday May 14th and Sunday May 15th. Join us all weekend long for whistle to whistle coverage.
The 2010 MDC season only involved 4 teams, but the numbers nearly triple this year with 11 teams in the organization. All but one (Central Mass Roller Derby, who were a late drop) will be present this weekend to play the three MRDA-sanctioned games required for ranking in the organization. Six teams will qualify to go to the 2011 MRDA championship on October 22 in Old Bethpage, New York; MRDA leagues will vote on an initial ranking following the Spring Roll and will meet again in early September to take the rest of the year's bouts into consideration for the invitation vote.

4:00pm: St. Louis v New York
4:30pm: Harm City v Twin Cities
6:00pm: Puget Sound v Pioneer Valley
For most teams, the action this weekend will represent the majority of their MRDA-sanctioned bouts before the tournament ranking; for a few teams, it will represent the entirety of their sanctioned bouts, so all 10 teams have a lot on the line here.
The MRDA's marquee matchup comes on Saturday night at 6pm as the lead-in to Fort Wayne's WFTDA-sanctioned bout against Bleeding Heartland; last year's Spring Roll victors, Puget Sound, will face off against last year's MDC champions, the New York Shock Exchange, in what effectively amounts to something of a title-consolidation match. New York has never lost a game in their 4 year history; Puget Sound has been undefeated since late 2009.
There are plenty of other particularly fascinating first-time matchups this weekend as well: Magic City goes up against Pioneer Valley, Dallas gets a long-awaited crack at New York, and Harm City and Twin Cities battle after just missing each other at last year's Spring Roll. Notable rematches include Puget Sound and St. Louis (who played a 1-point, last-jam classic to finish the men's side of last year's Spring Roll) and Harm City and Dallas (Dallas won by 19 in the 3rd place bout last year). And Magic City vs. Dallas features two teams built on jam-skating backgrounds in what's likely to be a showy, exciting matchup.

Kicking it Old School
Good luck gentlemen. Hard to believe there's so many men's teams now. Back in early 2007, there was just us (Hooligans), Pioneer Valley, NY and Harm City. It's a shame Diamond city is gone those guys were awesome.
Western Mass Destruction
Great write ups.
Correction: The Dirty Dozen share a league with the WESTERN Mass Destruction, because, you know, like we're from Western Mass. There is a much younger team out there in some other part of the country known as the Women of Mass Destruction.
The WMDs are looking forward to their first opportunity to play in a tournament event with our brother team!

FUCK YEAH.

OFF THE HOOK!!!
MENS POWER RANKINGS?
After Spring Roll will we see some sort of power ranking setup for MRDA teams?
Official MRDA rankings soon
The MRDA will release their first ever official rankings after Spring Roll, and they will be national rankings. Part of the reason we launched the DNN Power Rankings in the first place was because WFTDA stopped ranking teams on a national level and there was a big vacuum for such a ranking. On the other hand, it looks like MRDA currently only plans to rank twice a year, so there will be a big vacuum for a more timely ranking.
A long time ago in a comment thread that would take me too much time to find and link to, somebody asked this question and our reply was that we'd revisit the question once there was a undisputed national champion for men's derby. It seems like we might be there at the end of this year, but no promises on what the actual revisiting will produce.
So Sorry
I'm gonna miss this one......
Play hard guys!!! Have fun stormin the castle...
Thank You FWDG!
As ever, Thank You, Fort Wayne Derby Girls for hosting this event and giving us boys a great stage. Forever grateful to you.

Homicide!
Let's go Homicide!
Awesome!
I'm sad I can't be there in Fort Wayne (and more annoyed that I can't skate). Thank you, FWDG, for hosting this! (And thanks to Justice for the semi-embarrassing shout-out. Heal that ankle, man.)
I'm so SORRY!
Sorry to have missed Spring Roll this year!
1) But if it puts me in the same boat as the Central Mass men and the ever-huggy Killsbury D-Boy, that's not a bad boat!! Not to mention The Justice not skating. Nobody has to worry about their purse getting snatched...where's the fun in that?
2) I'm also sorry not to be able to hang out with the totally gracious Fort Wayne gals. They are awesome hosts -- great food and good times. Not to mention the amazing junior derby skaters. (Not sure if I'm counting the shooting nearby the after-party last year.)
Hope y'all had some fun, especially Connecticut Roller Girls whose guys "dragged" them to Fort Wayne. Yahoo!!!
Big hugs and sorry eye-tearing all around!
MRDA Championships Preview?
maybe?
It's coming today
After Derby Deathmarch III, the principals here at DNN are having a serious attack of Real Life, which is reflected in the lack of recent content. But we're getting back on the horse this weekend.
