AZ Conference Championships Preview

TUCSON, AZ – The Arizona State Conference Championships will be held this Saturday, May 7, at the Tucson Convention Center. Being the first state conference in the modern derby era, four leagues consisting of 8 home teams have battled for the top seed with the inaugural bout being played September 25, 2010.

Currently participating in the Arizona State Conference are Arizona Roller Derby (AZRD – Phoenix), Dirty Verde Roller Derby (DVRD - Cottonwood, AZ), Northern Arizona Roller Derby (NAZRD – Prescott, AZ), and Tucson Roller Derby (TRD – Tucson). All bouts have been played following the current WFTDA ruleset.

Copper Queens (TRD) have dominated the conference with an undefeated record of 7-0. The Bad News Beaters (AZRD) proved to be an early powerhouse team and will take on the Copper Queens for first place in the AZ State Conference. The Beaters, in strength and combined speed of veteran AZRD travel team skaters Loca Lena and Deez Nutz, will prove a challenge for the undefeated Copper Queens. The Queens boast veteran skaters such as Helen Wheels, Pixie Axe and Bianka Trohl to repeat the win against the Beaters on Saturday.

Vying for third place will be Tucson’s own Furious Truckstop Waitresses and the Vice Squad; each having a 5-2 win/loss record. The Waitresses are Tucson’s first roller derby team and were narrowly edged out of the championship by the Beaters due to point differential. It is important to note that the Waitresses won an upset bout against the Beaters late March 2011. The Vice Squad, just as seasoned as any other team, have rostered Derby Brat transfers Lindsey LoBlow and Great White Narc as their secret weapons available to use against the Waitresses.

Regardless of the outcome from the night’s bouts, the play of these match-ups are historic for roller derby, the state of Arizona and the four hard hitting leagues.

Michi's take on the bouts...

(6)FTW VS. (4)VICE
FTW was once THE Tucson dynasty but with the retirement of many of the skaters who made the FTW the FTW, the team went into a serious slump in 2009 and the couple of games played in the 2010 non-season-season. But while the FTW is ranked #4 in the Arizona Conference and ranked #6 in the derbydata.com Arizona Power Rankings, they are only ranked that high due the conference. The fact remains that the FTW has not beat a home team of Tucson Roller Derby since the July 19, 2008 bout against the Iron Curtain. If FTW beats VICE, this will break an almost 3 year curse within TRD. VICE Squad on the other hand was a team that was #1 on the Arizona Power Rankings until the TRD slowdown in 2010. In this season, VICE has beat every team except the Copper Queens and the Beaters. FTW will need to pull a miracle today as much I hope that 8, 15 and 19 pull a miracle on my box trifecta in today's derby.. I am putting my Michi money on VICE SQUAD BY 25~45 POINTS.

(2)BEATERS VS. (1)COPPER QUEENS
Beaters only losses were to TRD teams. 21 points against the Copper Queens and a surprising 50 point loss to FTW. They had a 100+ point win over VICE Squad. Copper Queens are undefeated. Their last loss was to VICE Squad in September 2009. The Queeens have been tried and tested against the best from Tucson, Phoenix and the High Country and they have passed the test and I think they will pass again. COPPER QUEENS BY 15~35 POINTS.
