Weekly Rollup and Open Thread, 2/11/2011
A recent review in the Onion A/V Club points out an undocumented feature of Jam City Rollergirls: "It actually taught me how the hell roller derby is played. (Hint: It’s pretty much all about passing other skaters.)" The reviewer also calls the game "remarkably tolerable," which our hipster-to-English dictionary tells us is high praise.
The review's initially head-scratching references to "a grafted-on pro wrestling vibe" are perhaps a little more comprehensible after taking in Brewcity's latest online promo videos. Hopefully someone will let him in on the joke.
In other "roller derby" game news, will someone please explain to us what the hell is going on here?
DNN Photo Editor Xena Paradox gets an unexpected shoutout.
Hey, remember the 80s? The Green Country Roller Girls' videographer does.
Arizona Roller Derby gets a better-than-usual local news feature treatment.
Longtime DNN partner-in-crime Wicked Skatewear has launched a blog, which B-Train describes as "kinda like a multiple personality disorder." One might safely predict that it will be a) regularly hilarious, and b) regularly NSFW.
Finally, this week's featured video is Cincinnati Rollergirls' remarkable contribution to the It Gets Better Project:

That's some iMovie action right there.
That comic book thing is one of the themes that iMovie gives you. You just edit your video normally and click on the comic theme, and it does all the work for you. It's pretty neat.
It's not iMovie...
Its not iMovie...and the software they used definitely doesnt do all the work for you. This is why you dont see everyone with a camera and youtube pulling something like this off. Easily one of the best Derby video ive seen to date...great job Hollyweb!

Really? Huh.
My iMovie has a comic book setup just like that. Even the transitions look similar. What did he use?
Now that I look at it again...
...you're right. It actually is different. This one had more same-page transitions, fewer "flips". Still neat, though.
Video effect...
Id rather email you the info... but cant figure out how to personally send you a message, being new on here. Send me one and ill reply, if you like.

Um...
Don't bother, if it's that much of a secret to you. There are plenty of folks in the community who have high-end video production skills and can figure it out.
I am not one of those people. :)
Loved the "It Gets Better" video
I'm not much of a crier but this one definitely got me teared up. Good job, Cincinnati.

Thank you girls, you made me cry! haha
No in all seriousness, very brave move. Much derby love to you all!
It rocks being different! The crappy times are what makes you who you are, it hurts, always does, but it does make you stronger.
You are all special, you all rock! MWAH
