Dutchland Upsets DC, 110-82

WASHINGTON, DC -- In an echo of their last meeting at the East Region Playoffs in September 2010, the outcome of Saturday’s bout between DC and Dutchland was determined by one question: Who could stay out of the penalty box? While their regionals matchup saw DC capitalize on Dutchland penalties for a decisive 206-118 victory, this time the advantage swung in Dutchland’s favor, and they claimed the 110-82 victory.
While neither team is currently in DNN's unofficial national Top 25 Power Rankings, the outcome does register as a official WFTDA rankings upset, as DC came into the bout ranked #9 in the East and Dutchland came in at #10.
The penalty trouble for DC began almost immediately; they started the second jam with only two blockers on the track, a position they would find themselves in throughout much of the bout. At first, Dutchland’s heavily defensive strategy actually worked in DC’s favor, freeing those two blockers to effectively keep Dutchland’s jammers trapped in the front of the pack. For the first 10 minutes of the bout, the two teams traded hit-and-quit jams, and Dutchland built a tenuous 16-10 lead. It came into jeopardy, though, when jammer Nash Villain was boxed — but DC’s Gun’Her Down and Condoleezza Slice were already there, giving Dutchland the ability to effectively manage the power jam and hold DC’s Free Radical to just 5 points. DC’s light pack was even more of a hindrance in the next jam; despite starting from the box, Nash Villain racked up an easy 14 points, putting Dutchland more firmly on top at 30-15.
With fuller packs and another power jam courtesy of Nash, DC quickly closed the gap again to 36-27. Dutchland blockers soon found themselves getting cozy with the penalty box as well, and the first 30 minutes closed out with a series of 2-on-2 and 4-on-2 jams. Dutchland led the only real charge on a 4-on-2 advantage; their agile front wall stymied DC’s Sookie Slaughterhouse while Twisted Scissors racked up 9 unanswered points. Finding themselves down 48-31 after that jam, DC again mounted a slow comeback, closing out the half only 8 points behind at 54-46.
Any hopes that the second half would be cleaner were dashed by the third jam, which saw every player on the track but one (only Dutchland blocker Renegade Raven escaped) spending time in the penalty box at some point. Often finding themselves at a disadvantage in the pack, Dutchland couldn’t manage to push their lead into the double digits – until a power jam combined with a 4-on-2 pack advantage gave Nash Villain another 14 points, bringing the score to 77-56. That powerjam was followed by two more for Dutchland, adding another 15 unanswered points to their tally.
With the score at 92-62 with 13 minutes left in the bout, DC needed a big opportunity to swing things back in their favor—and they soon got it when Nash Villain was sent out on a double major. At a pack disadvantage, however, they were only able to amass 5 points during Nash’s two minutes in the box, and Dutchland remained comfortably ahead at 101-73. The penalty box remained relatively empty for the last few jams of the bout (perhaps due in part to the fact DC’s Chinese Cheker and Gun’Her Down had already fouled out, and Dutchland’s Nash Villain soon would), but DC never got another opportunity to close in on Dutchland’s lead, and they finished with a 28-point victory at 110-82.

Yay Dutchland!
Good to see Raven is bouting again! Good job ladies!
rosters
Are recaps no longer including team rosters?
Did they ever?
I remember previews having rosters, but I don't remember recaps having rosters. I definitely know that last year's guidelines for writing recaps did not include rosters... it only asked to point out skaters that are debuting or skating in their last bout or other noteworthy skaters.
That being said, rosters in recaps sounds like a good idea to me.
Rosters? Depends...
Are recaps no longer including team rosters?
Depends on what they're submitted with, I'd imagine.
Cut 'em some slack. One of the leagues involved is busy mentoring the bestest WFTDA Apprentice league EVAR!
Ok, didn't know I was being
Ok, didn't know I was being overly bitchy or demanding. I was just curious about the rosters and figured it's an important part of the outcome of the games. The recaps from the recent charm expo didn't include rosters and I would have liked to view those as well, that's all.
It's not a bad idea, Holly.

I rather like the idea of putting that information into a recap. I don't do it mostly because there's never been such a request. Articles I write for DNN come directly from our regular MNRG articles, and those articles follow a set pattern. Previews show rosters, recaps show box scores (jammer name/number, LJ fraction, score). The preferred method of DNN recaps is to condense such a jammer rundown into the high scorers of the bout.
It would be relatively easy for me, personally, to add that information to a recap; the question would be (and this is a question that I leave to DNN's editors) whether that's something that's worth posting.
The problems come from the flow of information to the writers overall. There's the matter of asking every volunteer to run down that information for a bout; I can do it because I'm part of my league's volunteer base and I know the right people to ask. I already have those numbers/names at hand it's a matter of following my process of writing for the MNRG. Others don't always have that access.
As an aside:
That reminds me. I'm writing a series on the basics of writing for the derby over at Queen of the Rink. It got waylaid by MNRG's three-week stint of bouts, but I'll recommence once I get a moment. As we enter into the stats tracking and writing part of the series, I'd definitely encourage comments and questions, as most of us writers are always looking for a more streamlined method to do something that is done by just about everyone (outside of the DNN staff) on a purely volunteer basis. Most of us start doing this with no previous sports-writing experience, so we all pick up a process as we go along.

Recaps with Rosters, Box Scores, etc.
You're getting at an issue that I am very familiar with from a stats perspective. How do you present information on a bout in a way that's both comprehensive and appealing? Too much information overloads the reader and drowns out the inportant tidbits. Too little information, and the recap loses it's ability to properly convey the flow of the bout. There's a happy medium in there somewhere... It needs to be concise.
As modern roller derby is still very new, there is no defined standard for what should or should not be included in a recap. As you mentioned, we have been using box scores on the MNRG recaps for a year now. You've also had score snapshots in you blog (15:00 1st - Team A 34, Team B 21). I do like the idea of keeping a recap short with links to more information. For example, your recap of the MNRG v Tucson bout here on DNN has a link to the full article (including box scores) on the MNRG website.
Sports websites like ESPN have done stuff like this with their sports recaps for a long time. They'll have the write up with tabs/links to view the box scores, full stats, archived play-by-play, etc. You can get in and get a sense of a game quickly, and you can also dig deeper for more info if you so desire.
Thanks Flip
This comment pretty much hits every point I was planning to make, so that saves me some time today :)
We're always looking to refine and improve the way we present information here, so we are always into hearing feedback on what people want to see. DNN has been a work in progress for three and a half years now (!) and hopefully will continue to be for the foreseeable future.
you are right...
Dutchland is busy mentoring an amazing WFTDA AP league!
Major kudos to DC staff for getting the recap up so quickly following the game!
