Oly-RMRG rematch in the final...
...and it will be close, but RMRG wins again.
Waffler
Okay, so these are totally different than my picks from before. Ask me again tomorrow... LOL.
These tournaments NEVER pan out the way you think they are going to turn out. (Which is why I love this sport!)
Kudos to Gnosis for creating
Kudos to Gnosis for creating this. It'll be fun seeing who came the closest to calling it on Monday.
No Doubt
Thats a pretty slick bracket picker thingy.
Yes, real slick
Great job, gnosis!
nevermind
I get it now! Smarter than the machine...smarter than the machine....
Another bracket contest...
Admins feel free to nuke this post as off-topic, but I thought I'd mention that there's another bracket contest that's been online since the day the bracket was announced. We've got over 500 entries so far and some pretty sweet prizes. Check it out (and enter before Thursday -- midnight Chicago time).

Now to submit my entry in the DNN version. The score-picking format should be fun!
Seems perfectly on topic to
Seems perfectly on topic to me; the more pools the better, I say. Besides, ours isn't really a contest this year...just fun & bragging rights. Enjoy!
My dearest Dave
Is that creepy? I just noticed we had the same score predictions for RMRG in the final. Uncanny.
Creep!
Haha...totally creepy. ;-) Great minds, eh?!? And also...nice little avatar pic!
Calculation?
This is freakin' awesome! How does the leaderboard calculation work?
It'll go something like this:
It'll go something like this:
- 1 pt for correct winner in first two rounds
- 2 pts for correct winner in semi-final
- 3 pts for correct third place winner
- 4 pts for correct champion
The leaderboard will also measure your score accuracy for each team's score in bouts for which you predicted both teams, so that can be used as an extra measure for that small group of elite seers that rises to the top.
You make me wanna say RAWR!
This bracket is awesome! My results, well, we'll see. I have never claimed to be an expert. That said, there are some games that I hope don't go the way I've picked them here. I would gladly lose some points to see a super awesome upset happen this weekend!
Bookies' Dream
Gnosis - if you were a betting man, you could work out the spread for each bout and make a nice pile of change on the side. In fact, any enterprising individual could do this NOW.
That's how you'll know when derby's a "legitimate" sport - the odds makers in Vegas pay attention.
KC - if anyone cares
Looking at others' brackets, I feel people are under estimating Kansas City's longevity in the tournament. One thing they do extremely well is skate cleanly. This is how they beat a vastly more physical Rat City team in Austin, and likewise Texas in Lincoln. As long as they don't get blown off the track, they will always have a chance.
Rat City?
Most people don't consider scores from 3 years ago to be a good indication of the team's current strength. Different times, different teams. Best of luck to KCRW, though - I hope there are some surprises in this tournament!
I don't think Mr. Saucer
I don't think Mr. Saucer wasn't speaking to score differentials - he was pointing out that they earned that victory against Rat City 3 years ago, and more recently against Texas this year, by minimizing the devastating impact that piling up penalties can have.
I'd say that's indicative of a discipline common to KCRW that transcends different rosters because it permeates how the team trains and works together.
I don't expect KCRW to surprise us all this weekend, but you never know!
Philly
Assuming Philly beats Madison and is KC's opponent, I would also suggest that you consider the fact that Philly doesn't see the box all that often themselves. I don't think either team will have an advantage in that department personally.
I care, and I love them
I think everything you said is true and correct. I remeber that 2007 Chamiponship. I was at the Girls' victory party. I never lost faith in them for a second. They are a wonderful league, great Ladies, and such a wondrous inspiration.
Never underestimate…
The power of the under dog!
Derby Scores
I luv picking scores....but I'm definitely not a prognosticator…derby??? football??? derby??? football??? I'll watch both.
Boo Bracketing....
I don't like the bracketing...I would love for the loser of the Championship game to get a crack at the winner of the Third Place game, to see who's really the second best. Just grumbling.....
RMRG vs GCRG so hard to choose!
I love both teams and think they are both incredible....................
Good luck to all teams going to the Champs!
what I'd like to see
From DNN or Dave Wood is some summaries on how many people are picking what. It looks like nearly everyone has Gotham, Rocky, Philly, and Oly in the semifinals. I've found 2 that don't do far and they seem... somewhat optimistic for their teams, and nothing's wrong with that.
agreed
I am also wishing for some stats on percentages picking each team to win.
Oh, there will be numbers...!
Entries close at midnight (central) tonight in the DD/DWP contest. Shortly (I hope) after that, I'll be posting a full table of everyone's picks along with an assortment of geek-friendly numbers.
...and then I'm going to bed since my flight to Chicago leaves at 7:50 AM. :)
PS: I think we'll have close to 600 entries, by the way. Tiebreakers here we come!
Rocky: 48%
Out of 591 entries, here's who was picked to take home the Hydra...
Rocky: 48%
Gotham: 28%
Oly: 17%
Full numbers here: http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?uid=162015073826876&topic=648
All entires here: http://davewoodphotography.com/derbycontest
More geeky numbers after my flight. :)
Gotham > Rocky
I've been browsing through the brackets and noticed a lot more picks for Rocky than for Gotham, and I don't understand why the picks as disproportionate as the numbers seem to verify. As good as a team as Rocky is, I still think Gotham is the best team in the country, and I believe they'll win it all. At least for me, it seems everyone is giving too much weight to Rocky beating Oly, and is looking too much into how Gotham had a late collapse against Philly.
Yes, Rocky deserves full credit for beating Oly, but Oly found themselves in a position they've never been in before and they were up against a hostile crowd. If you put Oly vs. Rocky against each other again after that game, the result may not be the same. Is Rocky always going to find themselves up throughout the entire tournament? How do we know they're as good when playing from behind as they are as playing in a close game or holding the lead?
I think Gotham will beat Rocky in the (probable) semis. I see Gotham's penalty-heavy collapse at the end of the Philly/Gotham game as a fluke. Gotham was completely in control until they started getting in boo-coo penalty trouble, which is rare for how disciplined they are as a team. Do you seriously expect Gotham to make that mistake again, especially late in a game? You can't say that Gotham is inexperienced against "western" derby, either. They made a very rare west-coast appearance earlier this year, and we all know how that went. Also don't forget this is going to be Suzy Hotrod's last weekend with Gotham; she's not going to want to go out a loser. Also don't forget that Gotham's motivation to beat Rocky is that they would (likely) play Oly in the championship game on Sunday, the same Oly that knocked off Gotham in their first game in the champs last year.
Rocky is not going to have an automatic trip to finals. No team is, not even Oly on their side of the bracket. But you'd have to think that at least Rocky and Gotham have an equal chance to win it all. The numbers and the trends in picking Rocky over Gotham don't match up with that, though.
Practically a coin toss
The thing that doesn't make me absolutely sure about a Gotham victory is that in facing Rocky, they will be facing the best skating team they've ever faced with the exception of the Oly team they bouted last year. But if any team is capable of skating with Rocky, if not outskating them, as well as capable of constructing blocking strategies to blunt if not shut down the speed of Rocky it would or could be Gotham.
Historically...
"I see Gotham's penalty-heavy collapse at the end of the Philly/Gotham game as a fluke. Gotham was completely in control until they started getting in boo-coo penalty trouble, which is rare for how disciplined they are as a team."
Historically when Gotham gets in trouble, it's over penalties. They've tended to be such a clean team. Perhaps they are a bit less experienced at killing a powerjam or working with a pretty short pack than others. You know, teams like Charm City, BAD Girls who are so forcefully defensive that they tend to get a lot of penalties in the process.
"You can't say that Gotham is inexperienced against "western" derby, either. They made a very rare west-coast appearance earlier this year, and we all know how that went."
Let's take it a step further. Gotham trounced Charm City twice this year so far. Charm City was one of the three pioneers of what is erroneously referred to as "West Coast" style derby. Put quite simply, slow pack derby is not terribly effective against a team like Gotham.
On average, their jammers get out first and get lead. At which point Gotham WANTS a slow pack and the opposing team doesn't. On average they have two or more skaters who'd be jammers in any other league in their pack at all times. Whether they are passing you for a point or escaping your goat pen, they are good at getting around you. They're damned smart players with excellent teamwork as well. Good luck catching a goat and making her stay back where you want her.
In summation, I really wish the damned "Quote" button would come back.
Then again...
Perhaps people picked RMRG because they are really really really really really really good. Just a thought. :)
Woo!!!
So Excited I could Pee!!
I hope all my picks are wrong and I'm totally surprised. I couldn't even start to think about actual scores.
This is going to be an epic weekend!! Yipeeeee!!!
Show me the money!!!!!!
All war is going to break loose in the most fierce bout of the Championship......... Gotham v. Rocky Mountain.
PS
Can Val Capone announce all of the bouts, cuz I like her voice.
Val! Val! Val!
Here here, Sukie. I love Val's voice! And, of course, she knows her shitz :) Love JFM too, I'm just sayin... the knowledgable female voice is super lovely.
beej
I will join in on this Val blowjob because I found myself thinking the exact same thing during the BAD v Texas bout. Not only is it nice to have female voice, but someone who knows the inside of this game and is able to articulate what is happening in a rapid fire way without tripping over her own words, doesn't talk over the other announcer, hands off comments well, plugs sponsors at the right time and for the love of GOD does not UPTALK ... so refreshing. Thank you for being awesomesauce Val. I hope this weekend is full of this caliber of announcing.
Dudes, don't get your panties a knot, we like you too.

So far... on Friday night...
Only about six people picked every bout's outcome correctly. OK, out of the people I know whose picks I decided to look at. Key bout that probably 90% got wrong was TXRG vs BAD Girls.
Given the overall predictability of so many of these bouts, I'm tending to think that I should have picked TXRG regardless of what I figured would happen. This was the one game in the first round that had the closest odds. The most likely one to wind up not happening as most people would predict. So picking this one would put you in the upper 10%. Yes, Saturday's bouts are worth more points, but if you only have one of the right teams going into that bout, where's that leave you? A loser.
Anyways, some of the improbable picks people made gave me a bit of a chuckle.
Over 100
FWIW, there are more than 100 people with perfect brackets so far in the DD/DWP contest. But Texas broke a LOT of brackets there too. Full picks...
www.davewoodphotography.com/derbycontest
I blew mine
Obviously after Regionals people figured B.A.D. was a hot team going into the Championships and Texas wasn't. However, the Texies proved a lot of people wrong. I was one of them. Plus, I have to say I picked Minnesota over Charmed based on my heart not my head. I guess I didn't think Charm would get over their case of Penaltyboxitis and somehow pass it on to MNRG.
Oh well, if it wasn't for getting picks wrong this kind of stuff wouldn't be any fun.
Actually there were 32 (out
Actually there were 32 (out of about 200) who picked the right outcome. Anyone who has 4pts after Friday picked all the right winners. Also, people who didn't predict scores aren't included in the calculations, so there are probably a bunch of other people who predicted the right winners but aren't shown on the leaderboard.
Feelin' good with my bracket, but...
Being extremely bored at work I checked through the brackets of all the 4-pointers and found that only one, Mr. OSJ, had the same picks that I had, with Gotham beating Oly in the final. But he's the only one. So while I can't win it all at this point (I had BAD over Texas) I'm still confident that I'll be the best of the rest. I'm also pretty happy with my score picks at this point.
We'll know in about 6 hours whether or not people are overestimating Rocky's chances against Gotham. Regardless, that's going to be a fantastic game, so I'll be happy either way.
Yogi Berra would be excited ...
It's more than 6 hours later and it seems that the brackets are telling us that it's deja vu all over again? Or just a rematch of the western regional final?
;)
(In all seriousness though, yay DNN for the bout casts. I watched a lot of good roller derby the past two days. Can't wait to see tomorrow's action).
woah
i cant believe how close some of my score picks are!
Final results for the other bracket contest...
...are up:
http://www.davewoodphotography.com/derbycontest
19 perfect brackets. Our winner was 12-for-12 and predicted a 122-118 Rocky Mountain victory. Not bad!
Third out of 500, isn't bad...
considering all the "derby wisdom" and knowledgeable derby people I see on this list. I guess I should stick with it. :-)
