DNN Best of 2010 Reader Poll: Nominations

It's that time again! Welcome to the nomination thread for our second annual DNN Reader's Choice Poll.

Note that this post is not the poll itself. We're doing things a little differently than last year so as to get a wider array of nominations. Each category this year will have up to 10 potential choices; we're going to nominate 5 here in this post, and throw the comment thread open for y'all to nominate up to 5 more for each category. (This helps keep us from looking stupid and getting yelled at when we overlook somebody fairly obvious for a category, as we may or may not have done last year.)

This weekend, we'll look over the reader nominees and add up to 5 of them to each category. Voting will open on the poll on Monday, December 20 and run to Monday, December 27, with the results posted on Wednesday, December 29.

The categories this year are Most Valuable Jammer, Most Valuable Blocker, Rookie of the Year, Most Underrated Player, Bout of the Year, Best Rivalry, Most Improved Team, Best Venue, Best Regular-Season Event, Best Announcer, Best Photo and Stupidest Controversy. (Heh heh. Just kidding about that last one.)

The Best Photo and Most Underrated Player categories work a little differently than the rest. For Best Photo, email nominations to photos@derbynewsnetwork.com with the subject title "Best Photo 2010 Nominee" (or something close enough that we know what you're talking about.) Be sure to include the photographer's name and email address with the submission. Deadline for photo submissions is Saturday, December 18th at 11:59pm. We'll put up our 10 favorite in the poll. Most Underrated Player will be write-in only in the poll.

As last year, "Rookie Of The Year" is a tricky concept, since almost all players on all-star teams have been playing for more than a year. For the purposes of this poll, a "rookie" is a skater who played her first all-star game for a Power Ranked team in 2010.

Best Announcer

As much as I love many of the nominees, no Dirty Marty?!

Bout of the Year

I'm going to be a homer here and nominate the Minnesota/Madison bout at NC Regionals. Only twelve points separated these two teams at the end, sending Minnesota to Championship for the first time since 2006. That arena was LOUD.

Madison/MNRG was a hell of a bout.

I have reasons why I like Detroit/MNRG from that same tournament a bit more, particularly in how the live crowd bought into the game as it progressed...but Madison/MNRG was taut and re-established Minnesota as a serious midwest threat - and showed off why Madison continues to matter on the national scene. The DDs' ability to recover and rebound is remarkable.

I'm looking forward to the grudge match in January at the X.

Minnesota-Madison was great

Minnesota-Madison was great because Maddening and Baam were trying so hard to be calm and professional on the mics and you could tell they were totally living and dying with every second of the game and actually just felt like standing up and screaming/crying/cheering/howling incoherently.

Most Valuable Jammer and Best Announcer

I'm going with Tannibal Lector, who was the only Oly Jammer to be able to consistently get through Rocky's wall of blockers at the Championship bout, and why Oly didn't jam her more that game I just don't understand.

Best announcer, hard to top the Rat City team of The Professor Jake Stratton, Randy Pan and Cathy Sorbo. Honorable mention to that Pre-Recorded voice that says "POWER JAM" at the LA Derby Dolls game. Every announcer should have that digital file available at the push of a button.

I will pile on for Rat.

Got a chance to see Rat's announcer team in action on a trip in the spring. They talk the game, they interact with the crowd, they keep you in the action, and dammit, they're funny.

Another Rat pile-on

If any of you bothered to read the sidebar story Randy Pan wrote in "Down and Derby", you wouldn't think of voting for anyone else!!! (And after all, Val won last year...)

Rat Who?

try as I may I just don't recognize that team name, who are they?

Dumptruck

...is the pre-recorded voice that says "Power Jam" at LA Derby Dolls bouts :)

Voice

Yes, it's the pre-recorded voice that says "POWER JAM" at all the LA Derby Dolls Game. Always miss hearing it at every other bout.

lawl

what MercyLess was trying to say is that Dumptruck (one of the nominated announcers) is the "Powerjam" voice at LADD games...

Dumptruck vs Dumptruck

Wait, did Dumptruck just upstage himself?

Yes, the silky voice in the Dr. Sampler at the Doll Factory in Los Angeles in the one and only Dumptruck. Since we couldn't have him in the house, we did the next best thing...

Amanda Jamitinya for MVP

Amanda Jamitinya for MVP Blocker!

No kidding!

No kidding!

Thirded

No blocker nominations from the national championship team that dominated through the pack play of their blockers? You'd better be able to blame that oversight on alcohol.

Fourthed!

AJ for most valuable blocker.

second this!

second this!

Most improved

Wow Montreal vs Rocky Mtn for most improved. Its an honor to make the list but tha'ts some tough competition.

YAY MTL!

SO happy for Montreal nomination!

For the announcer category - I LOVE Lady Oshun from Boston and think she should be up there also.

As for most valuable jammer, surely Iron Wench from Montreal deserves a nomination - that girl worked her neon butt off all season! And I personally really like Hurricane Heather from Steel City for that category too.

Lady O

I'd like to add a "hell yes" for Lady Oshun.

Yes, I love Lady Oshun myself

But aren't you just a little in love with Pelvis Costello, too? And as for Montreal, I love Single Malt Scott but, girly, you didn't mention Plastic Patrick. He is DA BOMB!

Indeed!

Plastik Patrick is indeed amazeballs and Single Malt Scott is a darl, but nominating ALL of Montreal would just not be cricket old chum ;)

I, too, would be torn

Between Patrik and Scott, who are both fantastic for different reasons. Scott's a huge fount of knowledge and stats, and knows just when to pepper them into his bouts for effect. Patrik has a comfortable, easygoing flow that nevertheless misses no detail.

Coin toss says Plastik Patrick, but much love to Scott and the whole MTL production team!

Ah well, if it's all about boutcasts I'm just makin' noise here. I'd happily vote Val again.

Y'all re darlings for name

Y'all re darlings for name dropping me. Thx.

I 4th that!

I love Lady O! She is my derby announcer role model! <3

Make that a 5th

Lady O is a-m-a-z-i-n-g!

MVB(locker)

Psycho Babble

How could I forget her!

Seconded! Psycho Babble FTW!

Psycho Babble!

Psycho should definitely be in the running for MVB. All that pirouetting on toe stops can't have been for nothing!! I'd have a hard time deciding between Psycho and Amanda Jamitinya, but they should definitely both be nominated.

Nominations

Most Valuable Blocker - Amanda Jamitinya
Best Announcer - Bulldog

For announcers, i'll nominate

For announcers, i'll nominate Bryant Mumble of Windy City because he has got such a calm, smooth, in-control delivery that it makes me self-conscious about my own disconnected yammerings and yawlings on the mic. I'll also nominate Bulldog of Jet City because that guy sees so much of what is happening on the track that it's almost like he has a mutant power in that regard. Obviously i can and should probably list out about another dozen or so worthy nominees, but then i run into the trap of listing every announcer i know lest i omit someone and thusly cause anguish, so i'll leave it at those two and Baam will have to nominate himself.

I got it

I'll nominate Baam. God bless that man for wearing the Dairyland Dolls' old milkmaid uniform in Chicago.

Mine two cents

Bout: Rocky Mountain/Oly (Western Regionals)
Announcer: Randy Pan

Amazing!

What an honor for the Chicago Outfit to be up on the ballot for most improved! Not sure if we can stand up to Minnesota's incredible and abrupt improvement but I'm super pumped about the nomination!

Outfit, Outfit, do the damn thing!

Also, Tannibal Lector up there for MVJ and MVB!

I'm not completely certain

I'm not completely certain that the Outfit's "improvement" is not a case of the derby world in general just starting to notice them. They were pretty damn good last year!

Additions

Best regular season event- Spring Roll (peacefully bringing together "merby" & "gerby")
Best venue- the Filmore
Most Valuable Jammer- 'snot rocket science
Most Valuable Blocker-Amanda Jamitinya
Best Announcer- Ceaser

BArf the Brilliant

Thank you, darling, for nominating the Spring Roll. If you did not see male derby there, you missed the REAL event of the year!!!

Venue, Most Improved

I'm going to toss B.A.D. in as a candidate for "most improved."

Also a little hometown love, offering the 1STBANK Center, home of the Denver Roller Dolls, as best venue. We've got all the ingredients, as you'll see at 2011 Championships!

what he said

I second that about the 1STBANK Center, home of the Denver Roller Dolls. That is a great venue for roller derby.

So not to split hairs here...

And not to diminish the super powers of Urrk'n Jerk'n...as she is a fantastic, epic, and wonderful jammer. But she should be moved to the "Best Jammer" category. Though this was her "rookie season" with a highly ranked national team, this is certainly not her first year starting for a WFTDA league.

(Sorry, I'd hate for her to win the Rookie of the Year category and have all the kvetchers come out in full force so I figured I'd split the hair now.)

Rookies

"As last year, "Rookie Of The Year" is a tricky concept, since almost all players on all-star teams have been playing for more than a year. For the purposes of this poll, a "rookie" is a skater who played her first all-star game for a Power Ranked team in 2010."

Ah Forgot

Forgot that it was power ranked. Thanks for the clarify! (Probably smart to get that out there anyway, yes?)

And in the Category of Announcers

How can we not forget Pelvis Costello in all of his "Call in commentary" glory. Seriously...he deserves on that list.

And While it's on My Mind - clarify

When you say "Best Announcer," I'm ass/u/me/ing you mean on the DNN webcast? Just want to clarify so as to avoid the category being inundated by people's favourites from the in person call.

Also...why no slot for text casters? I'm sure I'm not the only one with favourites from text casting.

seconded!

Pelvis at Eastern regionals kept my better half on the couch and watching the action with me, just to hear what he'd say next. That speaks volumes.

Hooray!

Two thumbs up for Pelvis. I'd be thrilled to see his name on that list.

I would like to cosign the

I would like to cosign the nomination of Pelvis Costello as well!

Yes!

Yes for Pelvis!

Pelvis is The Man!

Not only was he fabulous at Regionals... he went out of his way to make sure I was as comfy on possible for my first time at tourney announcing!

Thanks again Pelvis!

a dream come true.

The shit that comes out of that dude's mouth keeps me in stitches. I love it when he announces PVRD's web/boutcasts. And his recaps with the Power Jammer Podcast are always insightful. Great commentaries to have archived. Always a blast!

Spank

If polygamy wasn't illegal, you'd never want for anything.

..you tease..

..and I love it!

call me ;)

I would like to sign up and

I would like to sign up and third or eighth this nomination.
Pelvis is one of the best announcers in the east!

I vote for Pelvis!

Pelvis should def be on this list, for all sorts of reasons having to do with how awesome he is. YEAH. PELVIS.

Pelvis for Pres!

Here are some of my favorite Pelvis Costello quotes:

"I haven't seen this much lateral movement since an MC Hammer music video."

"This pack is moving slower than Bruce Willis in front of an explosion."

"If you were to take a gazelle, and shoot it out of a cannon, you'd get Claire D Way."

I know there are millions of others, too.

My friends and I try to collect them, like some sort of game, and then instead of having our own conversation we quote Pelvis to each other all night. It's difficult but rewarding work.

Pelvis + Lady Oshun = Crazy Delicious

Pelvis and Lady O are each fantastic, but together, they're megatastic. [Looks anxiously at calendar for February 2011 season opener.]

Pelvis Costello for Best Announcer!

Pelvis! Pelvis! Pelvis!

Rookie of the Year Nomination

Windy City's Deb Autry!

Also-- just putting it out there-- No category for straight up MVP? Or Most-Valuable Multitasker? It seems like a few of the folks who've been nominated in the comments (like Tannibal and AJ) are so effective as both blockers and jammers that they might have slipped through the cracks. :)

xo,
Loco

Second That!

Loco hit the nail right on the head. Just as you want different categories for jammers and blockers to highlight their diffferent skills, it makes sense to have the MVP (MVMt?) category for those players like Tannibal and AJ who, while not the absolute best in the world at one or the other, are great at doing both.

Do-everything MVP

For any category of "do everything" MVP, the nominees would have to include Jackie Daniels.

Best Jackie Daniels of the Year

the award goes to... Jackie Daniels!!

Third that!

Agreeing that there oughta be a multi-tasking type category, even more so than simply MVP - it's really something special when players (such as those two) are so deadly at both.

Rookie of the Year

I just want to say that it is beyond words to see my name on that list! Especially next to the names that are up there!

It truely is an honor and I am so thankful to be part of such a amazing sport and to have been able to skate with such a supportive and wonderful league.

Many thanks!!!

Skittle

pivot?

I choose to be offended by the lack of best pivot category.

OUTRAGE! Maybe there aren't enough cute pivots out there to get enough interest from DNN. I promise, I'll wear more make up next year, maybe even a skirt!

As for best announcer: DUHH Dirty Marty!

Howsabout a "most likely to take it all in 2011" category?

DR

Ugh thanks for getting me outta bed

Lol dolly ur always #1 to me. I'll help ya put on some fake eyelashes so u can really bat those pretty eyes. Skirts are over rated and a pain; thongs will really get ya noticed. (dunno if u wanna be picked on more though) lol

the Pivot

is a blocker. i don't think it needs to be a separate category. The other blocker's roles are just as vital.

what she said.

Taxi Scab wrote:

Another missing category

I nominate Slammylou Harris for "Best DNN Profile Picture"

Well now

I don't feel that way and I know there are others out there that feel the same. If a pivot was just a blocker and was the same there would be no pivot. I guess it depends on how you play and team strategy. pivot is the leader of the pack and some leaders are better than others.

I agree w/ Holden

Totally agree. Great pivots are usually great blockers, but not all great blockers are great pivots.
Just my thought. A different skill is needed for a pivot that not all blockers can have.

Cute Pivots

Dolly Rocket wrote:

Maybe there aren't enough cute pivots out there to get enough interest from DNN.

LMAO! I feel the same way, and I'm a pivot on JFM's own team... LOL! ZING!

not enough cute pivots?

Whoever thinks "there aren't enough cute pivots out there" needs to spend more time in Denver. Seriously, though, it seems totally reasonable to have a Best Pivot category.

AJ & Psychobabble

I agree that AJ and Psycho Babble would both be great additions to the blocker category!

skittle is a True Rookie...

If you were wondering, Skittles first game EVER, was an All Star game for Brewcity against Ft Wayne early last year.

AND...

She also won MVP jammer in that bout. Voted on by the Ft Wayne girls!

Suggestions....

Jammer: Just Carol
Blocker: Frida Beater, Psycho Babble
Most improved team: Kansas City Roller Warriors
Rookie: Holden Grudges
Best Bout: Montreal vs Carolina at east regionals (eh, what can I say... )

shit...

jammer: how could I forget Shenita Stretcher?

Re: Suggestions....

I second the best bout nomination- that was a good one!

I nominate Jess Bandit for

I nominate Jess Bandit for Best Blocker and Best Pivot. She in the top 5 blocker according to stats for Eastern Region (at least the ones presented in the booklet at Eastern Regionals).

Yes, clarification on Best Announcer would help, and limit it to DNN boutcasts? I would include Rev Al Mighty and Justice Feelgood Marshal.

For best Textcaster, I would include Xena Paradox.

For Best/Top Controversy, I would like to nominate Montreal vs Carolina bout at Eastern Regionals. Like come on, took 15+ minutes to for the refs to figure out/decide who won. :p

Yay for Montreal for Most Improved! I concur. :)

awwww!

Thanks Nameless! You're a sweetheart! <3 <3 <3

I'm super happy for Montreal's nomination!! Go Neon!!

Right on

Reverend Al Mighty and Justice Feelgood Marshall, definitely.

And Xena does help us tune into the facts.

Sassy time!

-Pelvis

textcasters!

I think along with Xena, Slack should be on there as well! These 2 are insane text casting monsters, who I swear to god can see in the future so they're typing is precise with the action.

I also 100th Pelvis and Rev Al's nominations for announcers.

If a utility player category ever appears, I'd like to nominate both Quad Almighty and Dr. Spankenstein as both those dudes are fierce and effective jammers and blockers!

wow.

Thanks Fawkes! I totally feel honored! .. and I'm totally blushing :)

More Heavenly Voices!

For DNN coverage Rev Al Mighty & Justice have more than proven they deserve a spot on that infamous short list.

Missing Category

I was going to make nominations for the best afterparty. Then I realized that I don't remember any of them for some reason...

My 2 cents

Best Venue: Bay Area @ Craneway Pavillion
Best Announcers: Tank, Ceaser, and Gloria Hole

Some more...

I'll preface this by saying I'm biased (we all are), but Rocky Mountain and Oly are teams of all-stars. More of them need to be on your lists.

MVB: Psycho Babble
MVJ: DeRanged and Urrk'n (they are both amazing blockers too)
Most underrated: Assaultin' Pepa (I say this all the time. She is the smartest player in roller derby today, she is a strong leader on the track, and she hits like a Mac Truck).

And from other teams:
I've played against a lot of amazing skaters in the last 4.5 years, and no one is better all-around that Tannibal. Why on earth would be not be on one of these lists? Jammer, blocker, MVP, I don't care. She is amazing in every way, shape, and form.

I would put Joy Collision in the jammer category. Great blocker! But, even better jammer.
Yeah, Dolly, you're pretty good too. Just a hot head. ;-)

Juska is a damn good jammer. She should be there.

No DRD/RMRG rivalry? Or is that old news? It's still a good one.

Announcer: Da Jewce. The man is hilarious....and some other stuff.

Maybe if RMRG/DRD *played* each other...

Frida_Beater wrote:

I'm thinking that if the two leagues did the sensible thing and actually scheduled an annual A-Team bout against each other, this would be a no-brainer addition to this list. But how can you have a rivalry with a team you (almost) never play?

Pretty please!?!?! ...'tis such a waste.

That's not unique.

Dave Wood wrote:

That happens in every metro with crosstown WFTDA leagues, doesn't it? Minnesota doesn't play North Star, Windy City doesn't play the Outfit. It's not just Rocky/Denver that doesn't happen.

May not be unique...but it's still a waste. :)

I think the thing that's different about RMRG/DRD not playing is that we're talking about two of the top 10 teams in the world -- they could get a very competitive game with no travel costs for either team. I'm curious if the ones you mentioned would be as evenly matched (I'm thinking not at all, but I don't know the teams...just looking at numbers). There are lots of other derby teams in Colorado -- doesn't seem like a waste that RMRG/DRD don't play those teams because 300-15 bouts probably aren't that helpful for anyone.

If these teams wanted to be

If these teams wanted to be on the same track with each other there wouldn't be two teams in the first place. Or thus have my findings generally suggested.

It is worth mentioning ...

Our B-teams play one another. RMRG hosted DRD this year for our last-ever Bladium bout, and DRD is hosting RMRG's B-team at the 1st Bank Center on 2011.

It is fun for the crowd and a tiny bit confusing for some of them, especially with cross league transfers. I fielded a couple of those questions at the RMRG/DRD bout.

Wild Wild West!

It's awesome to have little ol' Bremerton on the derby map with the Wild West Showdown nomination. Would be even AWESOMER to win, but I don't see how it could up against Rollercon and all. But, and I'm sure it's safe for me to say on behalf of Slaughter County Roller Vixens, we are stoked to be recognized. PS: See ya'll at WWS 2011. Woohooooooo!!
Cavegirl out.

My Nominations

I would add Jet City Rollergirls to the most improved list also, they went from not being ranked at all to #12, to #7 all in one year and in a really tough West Region! This improvement is one of the biggest jumps in rankings of the year. I believe the other one was also Minnesota.

I would also add Bulldog to the best annoucer list! He is super knowledgeable about the sport, and the skaters!

+1

+1 to Jet City also, Omaha. Both teams launched themselves from obscurity this season.

Please add Jet City to Most Improved and Bulldog to Announcers

Teeny is spot on--Jet City's jump in the rankings and being labeled as "one to watch" the first half of the year show their game has been taken to a new level!

Bulldog has an amazing memory of skater names and really makes the bout easy to follow for new fans...please add him to the list!!

Most Valuable Jammer - Frida Beater

Seems to me that going to the line back-to-back-to-back in the last three jams of the championship game against one of the toughest teams to ever skate in Roller Derby, and miraculously finding a way of pulling out the win would at least earn Frida Beater a nomination. Talk about a clutch player.

MVB Assaultin Pepa

I second that Nom, the woman's a genius on the track that hits like a wrecking ball.

Most Underrated Player

....was so underrated that DNN forgot to list their picks?

I'm gonna nominate Brutalitar from Duke, and Precious N' Metal from Jet City! Both super scrappy, wiry players. Brutalitar in particular got really beat up at Westerns, but never gave up and kept scoring!

Nobody reads anymore :)

"Most Underrated Player will be write-in only in the poll."

How do you go against...

Oly vs. Rocky for bout of the year. Nail biter world championship decided by 1 pt.

&

Nashville as most improved. All of those teams were already good and got better. But this year in the off season, Nashville went from mediocre to good. Then lost a bunch of players to transfer and injury mid-season. Went back to suck. Then worked their way from suck to a team that got to the championship tournament in a crazy short amount of time.

Also... Urrk'n Jerk'n is a rookie???! Holy crap!

MVP Blocker

Psycho Babble all the way for best blocker you could feel her hits see her aftermath eachtime she went out!

Rookie of the Year (2 Noms)

Case Closed of Kansas City
Evolution of Kansas City

These girls played their first bout *ever* in February 2010, joined our travel team in May, and came with us all the way to the Champs.

Most Improved Team

Omaha Rollergirls for most improved team. C'mon - from 15th to 9th in WFTDA North Central rankings in one year? Six spots in WFTDA rankings is big jump that we are really proud of :oD

...and Omaha's leaving us for southern climes.

Dammit. Just when I became a fan.

Doozer, make sure you get back to Regionals next year. I want to see more Omaha.

we'll be tryin'!

That's the plan, sir. We will be working hard again this year to break into the new region!

Nom Nom Nom!

MVP Jammer: Tannibal Lector
MVP Blocker: Psycho Babble
Best Announcer: Randy Pan

Rookie of the Year

Gotta give some love to ..

TX: Luce Bandit
Gotham : OMG WTF
and super 2nd Holden Grudges (she's a rookie??)

Best Bout

Charm/Boston!!! I fell in love all over again.

Best moment?

What about a "best moment" category?

For that time that Bonnie Thunders got around Psycho Babble, turned around on her toe stops and stared her down?! ("Here's my favourite recipe Psycho Babble!!")

Or the time that a blocker (can't remember which bout, sorry!) was SMASHED to the ground and then helped up by the same girl who had just pounded her into the ground? (tell me that didn't give you tears!!)

Or when DeRanged forced three consecutive track cuts on Heffa in the space of about twenty seconds?

Or when Urrk'n Jerk'n went around the inside on one leg? ("Weeble wobble weeble wobble!")

Or when Suzy Hotrod, who was SCORELESS for the entire first period of the game against RMRG *finally* got her first points with an apex jump over DeRanged?!

Or the final moments of the Oly/RMRG final at Championships when Val and Dumpy lost their sh*t over the mic and blubbered like little babies? (totally not judging, not like we weren't doing the same!)

Or when Da Jewce proposed to Winona Fighter? (okay okay so that's not an 'action moment'... )

You could collect a bunch of video clips for part of the poll? ^_^

Also I want to nominate Gotham/RMRG for "Best Bout" - as it was a match up EVERYONE was keen to see, and I have never seen Hotrod held scoreless for that long!! Now *THAT* was a bout!!

RAWRRR

Penergy wrote:

!!!! This gave me chills! Two amazing players and the energy you could just FEEL when Bonnie called the jam and turned around, while sliding, did the stare down, and it could've just been in my head, but I totally think she 'RAWRRR'ed at her, too. Either way, that's what happened in my head, heh.

Penergy, you're a jerk.

You're supposed to append a comment like that with a spoiler alert! (Suffice to say we have something like this in the works.)

How could you ever pick a best one?!

Well, I suppose I could;) But seriously, those are all such awesome moments. Can't wait to see what next year has in store for all of us derby fans.
And while I'm at it, in the interest of not having a certain someone try to take back my pretty ring, I will say that as understated as he is, Da Jewce has some damn funny one-liners.
And for a less biased nomination, I'd have to say Rat City's announcers are awesome (especially Randy Pan) and I loved hearing them on the live bouts this year.

I also have to put another shout out to Assaultin' Pepa as a truly underrated player.
And I'm probably like 100th in line to say that Tannibal deserves to be on there as MVB or in the all around player category if there is one. So should Psycho Babble & definitely Joy Collision as well.

I know I'm forgetting some players. I'll probably have to post again.

"Best Moment" is brilliant...

...and I think DNN concurs...nice choices Penergy.

For blocker I second Dora's nomination of Go-Go Hatchet from Windy--it was a tough year for the Midwest, but she really earned some recognition with her quick, tough, yet smart skating this year.

If it weren't so obvious that the WFTDA championship would be running away with the "best-bout" title, I'd nominate a different RMRG-Oly bout--the stunning (at the time) Western Regional final.

=D

What about a "best moment" category?

For that time that Bonnie Thunders got around Psycho Babble, turned around on her toe stops and stared her down?! ("Here's my favourite recipe Psycho Babble!!")

OH GAHD! I'm telling you, all I want in life is a damn t-shirt with that image on it. It is forever emblazoned in my mind.

Top marks

To the Bonnie/Psycho moment. I think I squeaked out loud.

DEFINITELY also voting GGRD v RMRG. Amanda Jamitinya OWNS that pack.

Oh, I'm also 110% voting AJ for MVB.

Winona and Da Jewce AND Dumpie/Val balling for "Favourite Off-Track Moment" ... *tears up again*

bouts of the year

Wow I musta had some good travelin' mojo this year, as I witnessed four of the five DNN-nominated bouts for 'Bout of the Year', in person... as well as the Carolina/Montreal bout at East Regionals, which should have been nominated as well.

(I guess I'd replace the August Charm/Boston bout, which, if memory serves, kind of fizzled toward the end with a series of anticlimactic Boston jammer penalties.)

So obviously Rocky/Oly is going to win the category, but it's with an unusual amount of flukey first-hand authority that I'd cast my second-place vote for the B.A.D./Rose bout at Hometown Throwdown. Won in the final jam, it showed that the B.A.D. performance vs. Rat and their first half vs. Gotham earlier in the weekend were no flukes, and catapulted B.A.D. into West Regionals as a real dangerous force. The fact that it was a hundred bazillion degrees in the Rose City hangar adds a few extra bonus points.

Best Venue - I was totally blown away by the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium, site of West Regionals! Perfect for derby. Accessible, great sight lines, good intimate size, and in the middle of a good variety of bars, hotels, and places to eat. The Westchester County Center, site of East Regionals, also turned out to be a terrific house for derby, although a little removed from any kind of bar scene.

Best Announcer? Bulldog. Very professional, knows the game, does his homework, calls it quickly and correctly without histrionics or 'shtick.' No 'when I was a skater...,' no 'let's hear it for roller derby!!' Just informed, rapid-fire action.

And everyone knows refs don't have opinions about skaters or teams, so that's where this posting stops :-)

Tannibal, duh!

dude, i'm with frida and sweets on this, tannibal all the way for MVB. that girl is sick as shit and in my opinion the best player in derby, that i've seen.

how can you not even consider her? as rev norb would say, it's an outrage!

Maybe I'll add more later

Most Valuable Jammer: Craisy Dukes (Providence), Iron Wench (Montreal), Heffer (Oly)

Most Valuable Blocker: Maura Buse (Boston), Dolly Rocket (Charm), Dara Licks (Philly), Mordant (Carolina)

Most Underrated Player: Pina Collidah (Boston), hands down. That woman is a mothereffing ninja.

Most Improved Team: Given geography and their presence on the power rankings, definitely London.

Best Venue: Shriner's (Wilmington, MA), obviously. It's so good that you have to experience it in person to know just how awesome it is. The Westchester County Center having an upper level was amazingggg.

Best Regular-Season Event: The annual philly/boston april bout. i'm only 50% joking.

Best Announcer: Lady O! Pelvis!

hmm..

Most Valuable Jammer; Frida Beater..she's so stealthy and doesn't seem to have a lot of flair in her style, she just gets the job done. Not to mention the Oly vs Rocky bout wasn't the first time i've seen her used back to back to back. To do that against a team like Oly, I can't even imagine how crazy her endurance is, plus she scored the final point to take 1st. awesome.

Most Valuable Blocker; Go-Go Hatchet, Windy City..that girl is always where she needs to be and layin people out, and I just watched her do an amazing job against LA on the banked. I concur with Psycho Babble, she has definitely nailed down stopping on a dime to force track cuts and can contain like a mofo. I'll also throw in Carrie A. Hacksaw, Brew City... she looks like she's having fun screwing up whatever plan the other team had in mind, she's fun to watch.

Bout of the Year; Minnesota vs Detroit, North Central Regionals... i choose this over MNRG vs MRD because it was that holy shit #7 took out #2 moment that was very exciting that MN could take it to Championships. and then "wait...holy shit, we're playing MN next spring!"

Most Improved Team; I'm gonna throw Naptown in here. we were "on the bubble" many-a-times all year before getting the 25 spot when we had hardly a mention last year. we went from number 11 last fall and climbed our way to 7 after regionals, also to include that we beat previous number 5, Brew City, at regionals as well.

Best Regular-Season Event; Spring Roll..awesome teams, men's derby, AND jr derby!

Best Announcer; Dill Her0!!!! He knows his stuff and is hilarious. i'm biased but it's true. <3

2nd

I second Frida, Naptown and Dill Hero for all the same reasons.

I'll give a nod to the Cincy/Windy bout at NC playoffs. That was some incredible playing by both teams.

And I'll give a nod to D'nouncer Duane as well. Love listening to him call a game.

My additions

Best Bout:
Team Legit vs. LADD at Battle on the Bank - "Deranged" Hayden Takes the jammer start 3 times in a row down 11 point with 2:20 on the clock and helping take Legit past LA by 1 point.

Most Improved:
Bay Area coming from getting destroyed in February to making it to championships from the West Region

Announcer:
Randy Pan. The call from him and Dumptruck for the West Regional final was all gold.

Best Regular- Season Event vote!

Wild West Showdown of course! Some of the best match ups! And the challenge bout hall? Seriously genius.

Manglyn Monroe

Best Venue: The Doll Factory

I've been to a lot of venues, and I love UICP and the Memorial Coliseum in Sacramento for the real sports feel in the former, and a feeling of history and tying past and present together for the latter, but nothing is tuned to resonate in derby like the Doll Factory. Someday, LADD will have to move on from there. It will be a hard act to follow and a subject of insider nostalgia.

The environment is purpose built to derby, thousands of square feet of it, and games there, are simply sensory overload. As a DIY accomplishment, I think it's a marvel.

Best Venue!

i agree with Busta, the Doll Factory is a complete HOUSE OF DERBY! with a banked track AND a regulation-sized flat track (with rope laid down permanently) AND an off skates' training area AND a "backstage"/ dressing rooms AND a party room for private parties... dude, it's the shit. i'm just sayin... ;o)

<3 Cherry

p.s. Dirty Marty = BEST ANNOUNCER! duh.

Most improved-South Central!

I can't decide between KCRW and BAD Girls, so I'm nominating the whole South Central region.

It went from having what was once a kinda hellaciously dull tournament (third was all that was really in play) to this year where I really had almost no idea what was going to happen as far as second or third. And I wound up picking all three placings wrong.

If the region hopes to continue improving, I'd suggest one state drop their state championship (which tend to be coronations) or unofficial regional tournament and set up a multi-bout event a la ECDX or Wild West Showdown. Every other region in WFTDA now has a non-tournament weekend in the first or second quarter where each participating team arranges two or three sanctioned bouts.

These make the rankings better, they enable interleague rep networking and allow for skills and strategy to do all sorts of wonderful cross-pollination. Seriously, South Central needs one of these already.

I think the Piece Of Merch Of

I think the Piece Of Merch Of The Year is definitely my half-price-end-of-tournament Amber Waves of Pain hoodie ((i'm not sure why it has a sieg-heiling refereree on it, but it looks like number 88 white just got awarded a phantom grand slam)), so add that as extra credit to the South Central assertion.

One could reasonably make a case for No Coast being the most improved team of the year, although i had not seen them before this year and therefore don't have a great baseline from which to judge "improvement."

I have it on good authority that South Central high school football rules, however.

pop culture fial

That's be San Dimas high school football rules.

Sorry, Norb.

I think i want to go on

I think i want to go on believing that they said "South Central High School Football Rules" because that reinforces what i have learned about America from watching "King of the Hill" and what not. YES, STEVE PERRY, I *SHAN'T* STOP BELIEVING!!!

Gimme some eastcoast Announcers!!!

TOTALLY Lady Oshun and Pelvis Costello!!! all the way guys!!! Both of these announcers just melt the mic!

East Announcers!!!

The smooth sounds of Lady O and Pelvis all day!

agreed! Pelvis and Lady O - best announcers

Lady Oshun and Pelvis Costello are top on my list for announcers. They're funny and smart, passionate about derby, and on top of that I can actually hear and understand what they are saying! Lady O and Pelvis are a big part of what makes a bout great, and deserve to be on that list for sure.

Announcer: Da Jewce

What Frida said. Da Jewce did an awesome job at nationals and really is great to listen to -- knows the game really well and has lots of little clever things to say. I love that he doesn't just follow the jammers. He does a great job of describing what's going on in the pack.

best regular season event...

...is obviously ECDX.

it basically set the stage for all other regional invitationals, continues to be the biggest event + runs like clockwork. i mean, really, this is a no-brainer.

some other nominations to throw in there:

MVP: persephone, philly
most valuable blocker: heavy flo, olivia face, dara licks -- all super physical, smart players as well as brutal hitters

re: best regular season event

Agreed!

For MVB or most underrated player: Castro is also a super smart, physical, and very aware player who works really well with her pack.
When you watch Philly play and you yell at the tv screen, computer screen, whatever screen you're watching on and tell them to hit that jammer out or keep her back - they do! It's almost like they're your video game character.

I agree...

I wanted to see Urrk'n in the MVJ category, regardless of rookie status, joined by Frieda Beater, Just Carol and Tannibal. For MVB I'd like to see Amanda Jamitinya, Assaultin' Pepa, Psycho Babble, Tannibal again and especially Dara Licks - she had an AMAZING weekend in Chicago.

I agree with both Hambone and Axle that Bay/Rose at Hometown Throwdown and Team Legit/LADD are necessary additions to Best Bout, after the Champs finals, and the Westerns final.

I would add Bay Area, Madison and London to Most Improved Team.

I would add the fairgrounds in San Diego to Best Venue - what could be a better marriage than derby literally surrounded by beertasting festival + state fair food? There was even a view of the sea! That was FUN!

It's hard to explain, but Bremerton really was my favorite event this year (Wild West Showdown) - maybe because the venue and host league were so extra great to DNN, and the town was so friendly? All I know is I did a dance when it was official that it was happening again...

Sorely overlooked in the announcer category: Dirty Marty, Randy Pan, Bulldog, and Justice Feelgood Marshall.

Edited because I had a hard time with Best Rivalry beyond Oly/Rocky, then I remembered:
1) East vs West
2) Common Sense vs Tourney Structure (or West vs. Tourney Structure)
3) Slow/Stop Game vs Roller Derby Fans
4) Even though things changed in Chicago, a bunch of us spent time arguing about this all year: Oly v Gotham

Hells yeah!

slowderbysucks vs roller derby fans. Personal favourite rivalry.

Also, BAD fans vs anyone who isn't BAD

Most Quadtastic Quad

Most Valuable Blocker: Psycho Babble

Best Venue: Cincinnati Gardens

Best Announcer: Tank

When considering your write-ins for Most Underrated (I'm biased, but you know I'm right) please consider Hannah "Ouchocinco" Barbaric.

nomination Cranky Pants

As much as I like all the nominees under the announcer category, I would like to add ToRD's announcer Sean 'CrankyPants' condon for firing up the fans here. While he probably won't win having him listed would be cool.

My picks

Because I won't vote in the popularity contest, I'll make my picks from my coach's perspective now.

Best player/MVP: Tannibal Lector. When DRD first played against Oly in April of 2009, Tannibal was the power we couldn't deal with at all. The fact that she can jam as well as she does (the juke she put on a two skater RMRG wall at regionals this year was absurd with a capital A) while blocking regularly is scary. Plain old scary. DeRanged is a close 2nd in my book and DeRanged was definitely the best skater I saw in 2009. Not even close.

Best jammer: DeRanged. The percentage of points she scores for her team is probably the most lopsided number in the sport and she does it against high level teams consistently. She also can block well as a jammer and has introduced a different way of playing the position to the sport.

Best blocker: Psycho Babble. She's the key to Rocky's packs and has been for the past year plus. She singlehandedly takes down top jammers, which allows the rest of her pack to focus heavily on offense and speed control. Makes what is really a nearly impossible task look easy.

Most improved player: Frida Beater. Learned how to block well after years of jamming only. I've seen how hard a transition that can be for skaters trained to jam almost exclusively.

I'm not going to ra-ra for my team; we have many strong players, but we didn't make it to the final dance either and I think the tournament season should get way more weight in these votes.

And lastly, for DNN, you got the score in the DRD/BAD bout wrong. 132-128 was the score. Just sayin'.

My picks are...

Most Valuable Jammer - Kelley Young is the original flat track superstar. She's not only still one of the best skaters on the track but she elevates her teammate's level of play by her positive influence and her fierce competitiveness. Second...DeRanged.

Most Valuable Blocker - Bruz-Her is the rock solid foundation of the KC Roller Warrior's "Rollin' Wolf" defense. She's a game changer who uses control and intelligence to defeat opponents. She could also be nominated as a blocker or jammer for Architect Of The Most Amazing Home Team Comeback 2010. Second...Psycho Babble.

Rookie of the Year - A true KC Roller Warrior rookie this season, Evolution went from trying out to valuable All Star blocker in record time. Building from a base of general athleticism and with Bruz-Her and Annie Maul as mentors, how could she not? Playing consistently great all year, she had the 3rd most All Star playing time on KCRW.

Most Underrated Player - Case Closed. She went from being a true rookie to amazing KC Roller Warrior All Star this year. While she may have struggled a bit early on, she finished strong and had a HUGE Regionals and a dominant Championships. For fans who weren't familiar with her, they probably thought her skate name was Case Closed Lead Jammer.

Bout of the Year - Rocky Mountain vs Oly in WFTDA Championships. Any other bout this year was just an opening act for the main show.

Best Rivalry - Rocky Mountain vs Denver. Second...RMRG vs Oly.

Most Improved Team - My pick is Nashville. They went from "Nash who?" to "Nash-ionals" and played Oly really well in their 1st showing at the top level.

Best Venue - Dorton Arena is really cool; I've heard the Fillmore in Denver is gorgeous and I really like Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City but Pershing Arena in Lincoln, Nebraska is my choice. Skaters have all said the floor is awesome and the layout/parking/location is fantastic. Let's do another Regionals or have Championships there in the near future. Who do I need to date to make that happen? Too soon?

Best Regular-Season Event - Battle on the Bank...not because I've been to it but just because I want to photograph it so badly.

Best Announcer - Hands down, no question...D'Nouncer Duane Cunningham. He's an announcer with a distinctive voice and quick wit who represents roller derby as a legit sport and not a freak show. Second choice, Dumptruck...a guy with "The Voice" and "The Package" who's always entertaining and could be his own show. I'm constantly reminded of him because I'm still finding his golden essence from Championships on my camera equipment.

+1

Bruz-Her

agreed agreed

Both Bruz-Her and D'Nouncer Duane are hands down winners of their categories. Top of the sport!

Rah rah!

Best Utility Player

I wonder if we could have a "Best Utility Player" category for those players like Tannibal Lector, DeRanged, Bonnie Thunders & Juliet Bravo who are not only amazing jammers, but invaluable blockers as well.

Seconded, but...

...we could go on forever. I'd also put in Frida Beater, Suzy Hotrod and Re-AnimatHer.

Bulldog for best announcer

Adding my recommendation for Bulldog. When I watched the games he was calling I almost got the sense that I was watching a real pro doing it. It's a lot like the way I would expect derby announcing should be.

Best Announcer

Bryant Mumble should definitely be on there too!

Best Announcer

I think both Lady O'Shun and Pelvis Costello should get in there for best announcers. I was AT regionals and still tuned in to hear Pelvis announce the Boston v Charm game because he is THAT funny.

Pelvis Costello & Lady Oshun

Out of any announcer I've ever heard, they both have the clearest voices and the crowd totally digs them. Lady O is the ultimate Diva and Pelvis is as suave as they come!

Too many talented people

to get screwed out of the Number 1 positions

MVJ--Heather Juska (highly productive jammer all season, great bout against BAD), Just Carol (just scores a lot), Urrk'n Jerkin, Tannibal, and Freida Beater

MVB--Amanda Jamitinya (probably just MVP period), Assaultin Pepa (yea she hits like a truck), Psychobabble (hip blocker extraordinaire), Tannibal, and Femme Fatale

Rookie of the year--Rambo Sambo (MVP of AWP imo), 5 Scar General, Amanda Sharpless, Luce Bandit, Precious N Metal (ferocious never say die competitor)

Most underrated--Shenita Stretcher, Dara Licks, Holden Grudges, Swede Hurt, and Jackie Daniels

Bout of the year--Rat City vs. Philly at the WWS, Rose City vs. Oly at WWS and the Westerns, Denver vs. BAD at Westerns

Best Rivalry-Rose City vs. Oly, and Cincinnati vs. Brewcity

Most Improved Team-Charm City, KCRW, Brewcity, Jet City

Best Venues-LIU Schwartz Athletic Center, Portland Expo Center, Cincinnati Gardens, Pershing Center

Best Announcer--Bulldog, Draggin Lady, Randy Pan, Margaret Thrasher, Justice Feelgood

Best Photo--The closest is the Amber Waves of Pain Tournament Poster. I know it's not a photo, but it's a hoot and a half.

putting on stats cap

not that i wanna screw either ramb0 or 5 scar out of a nomination, but both have been playing in sanctioned wftda games for several years, so sadly i don't think they can be rookies. showstopper, slayla, luscious loosie, susan, union jack-u-up, dramatic pyrony, and jenny the jet rodriguez all played in wftda sanctioned bouts for the first time this year with nashville. (shameless nashville plug over)

Thinking about the wrong criteria

Oops. I was assuming that 1st tourney experiences were the standards for rookies. Let me think of a few others.

Rookie?

I believe that Luce can not be considered for nomination as a rookie either, being that she played for Tucson Roller Derby in '09.

Amanda Sharpless

Also not a rookie -- she used to skate as "The Swiss Missile" for Pikes Peak.

Holden?

If Holden Grudges is considered a rookie for the qualifications of the poll throw her in-I believe she skated with Harrisburg previously. Other than that, it's a little challenging getting info on skaters past experience or if they've skated under the aliases of Swiss Army Knives.

Holden

Holden definitely skated with Harrisburg prior to coming to Charm City, which makes her just barely ineligible - I believe Harrisburg was on the power rankings in early 2009. I think she could definitely pull out most underrated, though! For that matter, Rosie the Rioter and Holly GoHardly could probably take that title as well.

But seriously, if we're talking rookie of the year, IM Pain has been huge! She was CCRG's highest scoring jammer against both Minnesota (where she scored a whopping 110 points) and Rocky Mountain. If this is how she skated after just a year, I can't WAIT to see her next year.

And while I'm pouring on some CCRG love, I'd definitely move Dolly Rocket to the most valuable blocker category. And if this imaginary "best double-threat" or "best overall" category comes in, that's where I think Joy Collision belongs!

Best Annoucer Nomination

I would like to nominate Vince Hannity of Tampa Bay and Ft. Myers for Best Announcer. He has went above and beyond what any normal annoucer would do. He has traveled all over the U.S. calling at over half a dozen tournaments, and calling 73 individual bouts this year most at his own expense and is always willing to fill in when needed!

GONZO!!!

Best Announcer-Dr. Gonzo

Hands down! He usually house announces, so you wont hear him on DNN. He is one of 8 Certified roller derby announcers (or at least back in June when he was tested) He's been announcing in the south central region for over 4 years and travels with Nashville. He knows the game and calls it amazingly well.

Nod for GONZO!

YES, I totally agree with Rambo, Gonzo is an amazing announcer! And as she also stated he was one of the original WFTDA certified announcers!!

You know, i wanted to say

You know, i wanted to say Gonzo yesterday, but i was guarding against rattling off an ever-expanding list of announcer names that would just wind up getting out of control. I just heard him for the first time this year, i thought he was great. I love his sort of deadpan delivery. He's sort of like if Bud Selig had a cool younger brother or something. Er, maybe i didn't just say that.

In case you're doing the math, i think there are close to 50 AFTDA certified announcers right now, but someone else would know the exact number.

YES PLEASE. I love Gotham like a fat kid loves cake, but how come so few folks acknowledge Philly's amazingness?

DOUBLE RAINBOW!

No, seriously, best intro ever: Montreal at East Regionals. WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

Best name/number combo: Jamburglar (Race City Rebels), R0BL

It's so bright! And so vivid!

Montreal were totally amazing at Easterns.

Refs and other stuff

I would have to say Dr. Vroom for the ref in any capacity as we all love and honor her. She is the bombdiggity.

Yes to the Palmer House! We have all been to many tournaments and have stayed in many packed rooms that by the last day of the weekend were not very inviting. However the classy awesomeness of that hotel brought the game(after parties and all) to a whole new level. We may never travel like the NBA and the NFL or Pearl Jam but that was pretty close. I have photos of drunk people who shall remain nameless(until of course they are tagged on Facebook) singing on a grand piano at the hotel. Can anyone in any year tell that that's happened before in derby?

Also this is a pretty sweet shot. http://www.flickr.com/photos/laderbydolls/4848398652

When it all comes down to it. Its all about the emotion that drives all of us and the love for this sport. There are many photos in our circle and I have to say we are very lucky to have such talented people who are there for the ladies who skate. Its an honor to shoot by the sides of such nice and awesome people.

No "Best All Around" category?

Some wicked awesome ladies play exceptionally well as both blocker and jammer. I think this deserves some recognition if there's a 'best venue' category, personally. Best All Around???

I say move Joy Collision there, throw in a big helping of Teflon Donna, and sprinkle some of those west coast ladies I've never seen except in inches on DNN :)

...and then add Dolly Rocket to the best blocker category. Is she not on there because she can be mean or something? Or because Joy already is? I dunno, she's pretty stellar to watch when she's not in the box.

Clearly I'm an east coast lover. But hey, all of us are inherantly biased; most of us seem to be players, announcers, refs, or affilliated with derby in some way beside being a fan.

I think the KCRW vs DSDG bout was pretty amazing too, while we're at it :)

Lady O & More

I 100th the Lady O'Shun nomination for best announcer. She's incredible.

I would also add:

MV Jammer: Iron Wench (montreal), Julie Adams (denver), Varla Vendetta (windy)

MV Blocker: D Bomb (oly), Shelby Shattered (boston), Amanda Jamitinya (rmrg)

Most Improved: Montreal all the way

Great year!

mvp jammer-Heather Juska or K Lethal

Most underrated player- Demi Gore

Bout of the year-Tampa 96 vs Minnesota 98 @ ECE

Most Improved team- No Coast

Rookie of the year- Luce Bandit

o rite! Tampa/Minnesota

Oh I'd forgotten about that Tampa/Minnesota bout at ECE. Absolutely!!
Minnesota scored 24 unanswered points in the final two jams to win by two.
One of the most clutch comebacks one could possibly imagine.
So, yes, DNN, go back and read the textcast on that one:

http://www.derbynewsnetwork.com/live/bouts/2010/06/ecdx_2010_bout_8_minn...

Hazy Memory Alert

I believe that was the game where Lexi Cuter jammed heavily in the second half with three minors and never went to the box.

Minnesota nice, don'tcha know.

Yes! More fun categories, please!

Taking a cue from Quad:

Best mascot: Wooly Bully (Cincinnati), Rocky (Philly)

Best host hotel: Palmer House Hilton (Chicago)

Best commercials: Cincinnati (Plum St. Productions)

Best instructional videos: San Diego

Best new product: Atom Jukes, Gumball toe stops, Bearing Buddy

Best mainstream media coverage: "Game changer," Ling Ma, Chicago Reader; "Roller derby queens run rings around Chicago," ABC 7, Chicago

Best Twitter-er: @ROLLERGIRLHULK

Best DNN avatar: Roxy Rockett

...but seriously, in my completely unbiased opinion:

Rookie of the year: Wheezy (Cincinnati)

Best venue: Cincinnati Gardens, Kansas City's Municipal Auditorium

Best announcer: Tank, Caesar, Gloria Hole

Ooh I Like it...

'Print - you're brilliant.

Now, I know that DNN probably can't do all of these categories as it'll probably shut Survey Monkey down or something.

However, I love the idea of "Best Mainstream Media Coverage." It might be a kind of cool thing to send a certificate to whomever wins to acknowledge that we appreciate it? (Seeing as mainstream media seemingly thrives on awards for this and that?)

East Coast announcers Lady O and Pelvis Costello

Representing the East Coast....for best announcer(s)...I would like to nominate both:

Lady O as she is quite the DIVA on the microphone and in real life
and
Mr. Pelvis Costello for his charm, knowledge and dedication to all things roller derby

....not to mention that both of these announcers can be CLEARLY understood while they are making some of the best calls during bouts. Please add them to the list of nominees. :O)

Bout of the Year: Oly vs. Rocky at Westerns (sure, Champs was awesome and all, but this one set the stage AND broke Oly's streak.)

Announcer!

Hey,

Candy Corn-ary here, announcer for GMDD. I wanted to give props to Pelvis Costello. Not only is he an awesomely-knowledgeable and gifted announcer, but he is also incredibly generous with his time and very encouraging of new announcers! Pelvis has lent his time to GMDD over the past two seasons, and his guidance has been invaluable to us newbies!

He's incredibly entertaining and definitely deserves some recognition!

xo#xo,
Candy

why is no one suggesting this?

why is no one suggesting touching Stupidest Controversy with a 10 foot pole?
I nominate:
- the belated suspension of Sadistic Sadie
- blackface incident
- victory dance after winning games

I also suggest most touching moments that best exemplify the spirit of unity and togetherness of teamwork:
- an entire team donning the name of their suspended sister
- two teammates uniting as the yin and yang of racial harmony
- a team spontaneously rejoicing together in dance after besting a valued rival to qualify for finals

not our beat

Though it does seem like fertile ground for Hellarad :)

beat this!

Hurt, it's like we share a brain...only mine is a little more black and corroded. At any rate, we're working on it!

I love me some announcers.... but really?
Pelvis and Lady O ... have you heard Pan? Pan has trained all of the west coast, including Bulldog(he might not admit it, but it is there); chexx; draggin; phil; Pan doesn't even like me. but he does it...

Now Spydr You know...

That of course the brilliance of the Pan is wonderful. But west coast derby fans only seem to respond when they're kvetching about something.

There...I shortened the pole to 4 ft. Now I'm gonna lengthen it again.

Damned right I won't "admit" it. I straight up tell people! ;]

The three announcers that inspired me to follow in their footsteps are Rockerboy, Professor Jake Stratton... and of course, the ubiquitous, inimitable and indomitable Randy F-ing Pan!

Randy is the best friend and mentor a rookie announcer could ever ask for. Hell, he's even taught Dumptruck a trick or two. And for my money, even after 5 years, he's still got the best off-the-cuff banter in the entire sport.

More Noms...

Best announcer - TANK! & Duane!
Best venue - B.A.D Craneyway pavilion! BEAUTIFUL!!!
Most Improved - B.A.D/KCRW
MVB - BruzHer

I agree, you need a PIVOT category, PLZ!
Best mascot as well PLZ! - Beer & Keg (Brew City) was cracking me up at NC Regional's! Wooly Bully (Cincinnati), Bane-anna (Charm City), or Frank (Tampa Bay).
Also...Best Fans - Nashville.

I also have a few theories on why noone suggested Stupidest Controversy, ha. Nice one Dahmer. Touching/Memorable moments would be a sweet category as well!

Nominations

Here are some nominations:

Announcer - Randy Pan (seriously, I learned a ton listening on DNN from him. And on the Dais of Reverend Al's roast)
Vince Hannity (he's amazing)
Reverend Al Mighty

Jammer

Blocker
Amanda Jamitinya

Rookie
I agree with all of those picks.

Bout of the year
Rose City v. Oly at Westerns (the bout showed how good Rose City was and that first half was intensely entertaining)

Rivalry
BAD vs the World (Mainly because the world is so overrated)

The other categories are all good and right, and I will likely vote for one of the current five in them.

Seconded for Announcer

Announcer - Randy Pan
He'll tell you what's going on during the game, explain the strategies being played and whether they're working or not, and suggested counter strategies. Oh! Yes. He'll tell a joke or two, all at the same time.

Best Announcer team
Randy Pan and Jim "Koolaid" Jones

Worst argument of 2010

My nominee for most played out argument in 2010: the WFTDA regions argument!!!!

You heard tons of people this past year up in arms about the WFTDA regions and how some teams get to go to nationals while more deserving teams in tougher regions do not etc. etc. blah blah blah cry cry cry. Folks the WFTDA is not alone in this type of situation, I give you the NFL NFC West!!!

One of these teams will be going to the playoffs with what will most likely be a losing sub .500 record at the end of the year. Currently; Rams 6-7. Seahawks 6-7, 49ers 5-8, Cardinals 4-9. If a team with a losing record makes the playoffs while other teams with up to 10 wins in a 16 game season are going to be left out, is the NFL going to change all it's divisions so it better aligns talent in all of its regions?(no) Will owners, coaches, players, and fans of the teams left out be up in arms angry about it?(of course) WFTDA is not alone in sports when it comes to some regions being better than others. Power changes. The NFC was top dog, now the AFC is. Over time it will most likely flip again and then back and forth again and again. That's sports for you folks always changing. I'm looking forward to 2011 and the continued growth of this sport we all love so much, and seeing the amazingly talented skaters in all the regions kickin' ass!!!!!!
Oh and for best venue of 2011, your godmothers the Texas Rollergirls are moving into the Austin Convention Center in kick ass downtown Austin, Texas! (If you were at Nationals in 2007, that place) Hello killer new pre-parties and after-parties downtown!!! It's going to be a hell of a year!!! Y'all come down see us sometime!

And for the record I am at work right now killing the clock before go time, bored, reading DNN, goofing off and not working and typing to look like I'm doing something of importance! Every few minutes mumble out a curse word or two and people just think it business as usual. Love ya DNN and thank you so much for helping me continue my slacker office ways all year! There was a whole lot of nothin' getting done during regional Friday games!!!! Derby Love to all my skater friends, and a Happy Holidaze to all!!!!! ;^p

Show NAPTOWN some love!

Most improved team: (obviously) Naptown Roller Girls.
...and here's why.
1. Awesome showing at ECE
2. Spectacular debut at NC Regionals
3. Made the DNN Power Rankings for the first (and 2nd) time EVAR!!!

hahahha super awesome.

September 10th...

Loser hands over exclusive use of NRG?

Up the ante you say? Loser hands over all eNeRGy to the winner to take to their respective regionals. It'll be like when Giles borrowed the power of a nearby coven to take on an extremely powerful and lost-her-marbles Willow in Buffy's 6th season. Except we'll rewrite Willow's part to be be played by Chicago or Kansas City or perhaps Texas. And instead of being on a mission to flay her enemies alive... actually that part probably doesn't have to be rewritten.

i LOVE you for using a Buffy reference!!

Naptown Roller Girls

Most Improved Team: Naptown Roller Girls
1. Great showing at ECE.
2. Great showing at NC Regionals (beat two teams ranked higher to finish 6th).
3. Made the DNN Power Rankings for the first time ever and maintained it!
4. Undefeated home season.
Best Merch: Naptown Roller Girls

NRG DOES HAVE THE BEST FANS!

Naptown and other thoughts

You know, I have to chime in as a fan.

Rookie of the Year, Amooze Bouche (Naptown)
Most Improved: Naptown Roller Girls (From off the radar to top-25 team, with a very respectable performance at North Central regionals, and having beaten the Chicago Outfit...twice.)
Best Venue: Pepsi Coliseum--Indianapolis (While I haven't been to the other venues, it seems like a pretty big deal to have a higher-capacity venue that is shared with a Championship-caliber minor-league hockey team and many other major events in its city.)

Admittedly, I'm fanboy-ing a bit. However, my point is that I think that the view of these awards is getting a bit cloudy from only looking at teams that are contending for the national championship. There is GREAT derby out there with a metric crap-ton of spirit that should be recognized for what they do.

Also, I know that we can only look at so much derby, even with the reach of DNN, but shouldn't we be trying to look deeper? Can we have categories for "best community service project", "best outreach", or reward behind the scenes skills like "best merch" or "best website"?

Mission creep

At the risk of sounding like a big jerk, our goal here is not really to recognize teams and players for their level of spirit, it's to recognize the ones who were the best at playing roller derby in 2010.

Well ... again, that's not what we're trying to do here. Sure, we theoretically could come up with a 200-category poll that covered every possible aspect of derby, but the focus of this poll is about excellence in the game itself.

OK, so what does Best Venue, Best Announcer, and Best Photo have to do with it? Those are all things totally out of the control of the players that probably don't have anything to do with who's the most improved player or the best blocker, etc.

Incorrect.

It's still about the best in any given category.

And really, they're not "totally out of control of the players" at all. At least in my league, the players chose the venue and negotiated the contract, they chose the announcers, and they chose the league photographers.

Sorry

If you don't think that venues, announcers and photos are integral parts of how an audience experiences excellence in a sport, we're not going to come to much common ground on this topic. Without these production values, we might as well all be playing in beer leagues. Not, of course, to suggest there is the slightest thing wrong with beer.

To come at it from the other angle, you'll never see a couple of sports fans at a bar arguing over whether the Baltimore Ravens' Hispanic Worldwide Day of Play is a better community outreach program than the Pittsburgh Steelers' 9th Grade Nation Kick-Off, know what I mean?

Re your subject line: good luck on getting a significant group of derby people to agree on what "the mission" is. Right here, we do it the way we want it done; you will certainly find other places on the Internet that do it differently.

Those links don't work

Those links don't work correctly. They did not take me to Lambeau Field, Bob Uecker, or Bart Starr's QB sneak during the Ice Bowl.

Hockey and other events don't matter.

What I think about when voting for the best venue is: how is it to see a derby bout there? Just because other things happen there doesn't add to its quality as a derby venue. The Roy Wilkins Auditorium was the home of the AWA for many years, but just because it was the starting point for some of the greatest professional wrestlers of the 70s and 80s doesn't mean it's a great place to watch roller derby. It's great because of the sightlines, the giant video screens, the lighting making it easy to see what's going on, etc.

And a high-capacity venue is nothing without people to fill it. 16,000 seats at Key Arena would be awesome, but 7,000 attendees doesn't make it look or feel as full as it actually is.

A venue should be the right size for the crowd, with great sightlines, good sound and lighting, and be conducive to watching roller derby. The top three in my mind are The Doll Factory, the Fargo Civic Center, and (my home and vote) the Roy Wilkins Auditorium.

Now, I've never been to "Pepsi Coliseum" (which loses points in my mind for probably not serving Coke), but I'm looking forward to NC Regionals there this October!

meh...

key arena feels pretty full when you actually skate there. just sayin'.

Don't knock it until you've tried it. ;)

John_Maddening wrote:

Well, having been down on the floor running around getting those 7,000 people to cheer, it certainly looked & felt full.

The lower bowl of the arena was sold out, and it was CRAZY.

That's entirely possible.

Having only seen photos and never been there, there were a shit-ton of people, but a lot of empty seats in between them. Closing off the upstairs is probably a good idea. I hope to get there myself someday!

If you go back to the first time

those pix of Key arena crowds were posted on DNN, I am pretty sure Axle or someone explained that they were taken at halftime, when people were leaving their seats to get beer.

Hopefully

Rat City will be one of those leagues making the bid to use the Key for a regionals or a WFTDA championship.

Best Announcer Nomination

Entering a nomination for Vince Hannity of Tampa Bay and Ft. Myers

I would like to nominate

I would like to nominate Vince Hannity of Tampa Bay and Ft. Myers for Best Announcer. He has went above and beyond what any normal annoucer would do. He has traveled all over the U.S. calling at over half a dozen tournaments, and calling 73 individual bouts this year most at his own expense and is always willing to fill in when needed!

Best Venue, Best Bout

Okay.

Best Venue Nom: LA Derby Dolls' Doll Factory. F'Reals. Have you been to our home?

Best Bout Nom: Either of the LA-Git bouts would work. Both came down to the final jam. If you'll count a half hour qualifying bout, let's go BotBIII, Team Legit beats the LA Derby Dolls 67 - 66 in the final jam. If not, let's go with LADD over Team Legit 133 - 127, March 27.

Also, get with "Best Ref," yo. F'Reals.

I'm shocked that the Doll Factory isn't being mentioned more here. I mean, come ON, it's freakin' AMAZING. Part of the appeal of the game isn't just how many people you can shove into a venue, but how that venue sets the mood for the game. The Doll Factory knows how to do this very, VERY well.

Best game? Criminey, that's a tough one, and full of the usual suspects: BAD vs. Rose, RMRG vs. Oly. But LADD vs. Legit at Battle on the Bank holds a special place in my dark little heart. Team Awesome vs. Team SeXY at Rollercon was an interesting show of brains vs. brutality.

I also nominate Gotham vs. Philly at Championals as the best example for the folks who hate stopper/stroller derby as to why they hate it. I hated it, and I usually don't mind that show of strategy. But GOOD LOURD when the whistle blows at the start of the jam, START THE JAM ALREADY. I wasn't bored with any other game during Nationalships except that one because no one moved half the time. YAWWWWWWN.

Total agreement

BOTB III, LADD vs Team Legit fo sho. The raw emotion of that bout... I mean look at Skatum's face: http://www.flickr.com/photos/laderbydolls/4848398652

And if that match doesn't count, there was a tense series of nailbiters in the LADD home season this year, but LADD vs Legit in March was one of the toughest. Amazing gameplay from both sides, and yeah, it came down to the last jam.

The Doll Factory for best venue, no questions. Banked AND full sized flat tracks. Did you see the videos DNN posted from March Radness? "The Temple of Roller Derby." -- you don't need to take our word for it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jt_jKVT1jGo#t=04m59s

But I know if we don't win this year, we will next. With Rat City, Gotham, and Rocky Mountain coming to visit, not to mention March Radness, everyone will get to see the pure awesome that is the Doll Factory. We can't wait to host you. :)

P.S. seconding the Best Ref idea. It so happens my nomination is the Enforcer who just suggested the category...

Bay Area vs Rose City

Bay Area has knocked Rose City out from going to Nationals, twice, 2008 and 2010. And Rose has come back and put some serious beatdowns on BAD, 157-27, comes to mind. For some reason these two teams really don't like each other. Think about Hellarad's attitude about boot covers; need I say more.

Best Announcer

Ida Feltersnatch! all over the Northeast (pun intended) She announces for 3 local leagues and guests with almost every other team in the region. She is all derby all the time and deserves a nod.

pelvis, lady o, and the reverend al mighty

definitely belong at the top of the list of anyone's favorite announcers. they are certainly at the top of mine.

rookie of the year

Rookie of the Year- Willa Hoeflinch (Naptown Roller Girls)
She has been extremely reliable and plays well under pressure. She only skated one all-star bout against The Outfit before NC regionals. She doesn't get scored on very often. She is lightning fast and is able to run down any opposing jammer.

Poll Update

One of these days we'll learn not to post deadlines for ourselves, because it just makes it more stressful when we run up against them. Since we got approximately ten trillion nominees for Best Photo, it took us a little longer than we expected to go through them, but with any luck the poll will be live sometime during the latter half of today.

Take your time and select the best shots.

It's really good to see

It's really good to see Minnesota up there for Most Improved! As Justice mentioned somewhere sometime, it was more of an increase of skill in the skaters we already had than a huge influx of new talent (though Juke Boxx helped of course :) As an MNRG league member, it was great to watch our All-Stars start to reap the benefits of their hard work and really start to gel as a team.

It's also nice to see that MNRG / NSRG weren't listed under Best Rivalry this year. We seem to get along well. No really.

For best venue, I've still never seen anything like the Roy Wilkins. Cushy seats! Mini doughnuts!

For MV Blocker, I was really impressed with Bruz-Her at Championships. And Dolly Rockit + Joy Collision on the track at the same time is beeeautiful to watch.

Thanks for compiling this DNN!

Ginger Vitis

...for most underrated. I think she was the biggest threat to Philly's opponents all four bouts at Championships, but if you don't think so I'm happy to keep her as our little secret!

Oliva Shooting John

I believe that her name at least needs to be on the list of best jammers.

NO JOE ROLLERFAN FOR BEST PIX?!?!?!?

Frankly I am shocked and amazed that not a single photograph of Joe Schwartz (Joe Rollerfan) from Seattle was nominated for Best Derby Photo. Joe is such a valuable asset to the entire derby community but most especially the Pacific Northwest. We've let you down Joe, and for that I'm sorry. In my humble opinion YOU are thee best photographer shooting derby today!

Thinking is hard

Granted ... I am blonde, drink heavily quite often, love me some Joe and am lazy when I have to do stuff ... it's kosher for us to complain that someone wasn't nominated? This is a readers poll? That means if someone has that big of a boner for something or someone, take responsibility to make it happen - yea? I could be confused.

Heh

To quote our alternate-universe slogan: "Derby News Network: Giving You Something To Complain About Since 2007!"

In all seriousness, as we said in the opening, we had MANY, MANY submissions and nominations for Best Photo. We think Joe is unquestionably one of the best shooting derby today (and I think we've probably used his images on our front page more than anybody but Axle's), but of the specific nominations we received, the 12 in the poll were the ones that stuck out to us the most.

Yes, It's Yet Another Outrage!

Thanks for the compliment, Justice -- no hard feelings here. The photos you chose are excellent, and I'm happy to see you included three of the ones I nominated.

And B-Train, it's always kosher to complain about stuff here, especially about things that aren't kosher. I can't speak for the original poster, but I'm making a new year's resolution to always take responsibility for my boner.

There's just no love for us

There's just no love for us European snappers. Or boners, fortunately. :D

You're never going to please everybody with poll nominations, but I'm just glad that Assaultin' Pepa made the list.

And risk getting snubbed by DNN in next year's Funniest Joke category? I don't know if I could take that kind of rejection.

I'm shocked...SHOCKED, I tell ya!

Joe's work should definitely have been included in Best Derby Photo! He's not only an excellent photographer but he's a great guy as well. To help make up for being left off the list, go look at his work http://www.flickr.com/photos/rollerfan/ and make some nice comments on his photos. When you see him at a bout, buy him drinks, tell him how much you love his photography and hug him if he's not sporting a "long lens".

Most Underrated

Well, the fact that she wasn't mentioned during the nomination process shows that Athena (Steel City) is definitely underrated. Just ask anyone who's played against the Steel 'Hurtin.

wow...

I just wanted to say how honored I am to have a photo nominated... It truly is inspiring for me, as a rookie shooter (this is my first season,) to have photo along side some of the great names in photography. Congratulations to everyone who was nominated, and best of luck!

-Sir Clicks-A-Lot (Jason Ziemlak)

Video?

What, no video category? I see how it is. LoL

Maybe next year...

I've been truly honored by the derby luv I get through YouTube directly. There are many great competitors out there for "best derby video" and hopefully next year DNN will include the category - and not just in YouTube or Justin.tv or...

It hadn't even occurred to me this ought to be a category until you mentioned it. Now I want it in 2011 so I can see what video rocks people's derby socks out of their boots.

Thank you!

I've been off the site for a whie. I didn't know I was nominated for announcer of the Year...Honored & Humbled by the amazing people in this community.

Most improved Team

It makes me so happy to see The Chicago Outfit up for Most Improved! The league has come such a long way since they started and they have my heart and my vote!

My input

Heck yeah!

Underrated: Ginger Vitis for underrated!
Going out of my league though I have to say Athena, or Velveteen Savage

Best Blocker: Fisti Cuffs (gives me the hardest time in all derby)

Best Jammer: Shenita Stretcher (haha), Jackie Daniels, and Snot Rocket science.

Oh yeah, Ginger and Shenita look hot naked on skates..... jus saying....

Announcer Nominee

How about adding Bulldog to the announcer category? He's announced in Europe and Canada as well as USA. A fan and viewer favorite. Always focused and has an uncanny memory for skaters names.

Wrong.

A little too late b/c it's already nominated but wanted to mention...Cincinnati and Brewcity are not rivals. I only saw one nom on here and we still made it on the list? ;)

Oh well. I voted! :) Good luck to everyone nominated!!!

Anyone. Anytime. Anywhere.

"Rivals"

Rivalry: "Competition for the same objective or for superiority in the same field."

This same thing happened with different teams last year, which I think is due to a lot of people incorrectly believing that "rivals" is a synonym for "enemies." A rivalry can be friendly or it can be bitter. For example, my team, Harm City Homicide, has a friendly rivalry with the Pioneer Valley Dirty Dozen, but the New York Shock Exchange can go jump off a cliff.

JUST KIDDING

Yep

Yep, know the definition. Love it! lol

We are definitely competitors in our region that's for sure, and that rivalry does and will always exist on some level, I hope. I agree most people choose teams for this category thinking it's more of an "enemy" type of rivalry which is what I was pointing as as far as my comment. It's not. Either way it's funny. ;)

Oh, and I forgot...It's an honor to be nominated. :D yah!!!

Best Tourney of 2010

Fort Wayne Derby Girls have worked hard to bring the derby world Spring Roll for 3 years (formerly Fall Brawl). Last year, Spring Roll morphed into the first men's derby tourney ever!

That's why I voted for Spring Roll for Best Regular Season Event. Fort Wayne Derby Girls have done A LOT for roller derby in general and for men's derby in particular. It's thanks largely to Ref Jam at the first Fall Brawl that I get to play this wonderful game. Whether Spring Roll wins or not, THANK YOU a million times to FWDG for everything you've done for me. XOX.

well....

The first men's tourny was Throwdown in the Sound '08, played in Tacoma WA.

Rookie of the Year

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR HAS TO GO TO ::::

I.M. Pain (Charm City)

sorry, but someone has to say it

No Gotham Blockers for Best Blocker?
That's dumb!
There, I said it!

They've got fine blockers

however, I believe the Gotham blockers are really at their most effective working as an ensemble; then again a lot of teams tend to work well that way, but they better than most. Maybe that's why it's harder to identify individuals in Gotham's case.

Most Improved Team

Most Improved Team has to be the Chicago Outfit. I've watched this team develope over the past three years form a scrappy band of sassy women to a focused, dedicated, highly skilled organization of committed derby women. This year they earned their membership into WFTDA, made another memorable splash at Rollercon, evolved the organization, expanded recruiting, and refined practices. These ladies give everything they have to every practice and bout, and conduct themselves with class and dignity win or lose! This team is what derby is all about, including their stated goal of global domination! Outfit!

MVP

craisy dukes. 2010 champion sakonett river roller rats. providence roller derby. ive watched her "RUN" by other sk8ers that were sk8ing at full speed. has to be seen to be believed. oly has some really fast sk8ers i saw them this year. DUKES is faster!

You can't, but we can. I

You can't, but we can. I have deleted your submission -- the system should allow you to see & submit the form again. Hurry up, though; this poll was supposed to close yesterday and we'll probably close it any time now...

Rookie of the Year

I know nominations are over, but according to the prerequisites of "Rookie of the Year" wouldn't Jackie Daniels be eligible? Isn't this her first year playing on a power ranked team?

I believe not

Jackie Daniels was on Grand Raggidy in 2009 and Grand Raggidy was power ranked in 2009.

More derby music.

Not sure if anyone outside of the WCR circle has seen this but I am in love with this song. Its our skaters, refs and announcers song.

Where's Burly Bot?

While I respect the list of nominations (vote for Demanda!), where's Burly Bot on this list? Most valuable Jammer? Best Blocker? She took on so many roles this season - let's get Burly Bot on the list!

Where's Burly Bot?

Ummm, the polls closed 2 months ago. Perhaps you should have made this post then instead of 4 days ago?

In my opinion the nominations were spot on and I can't think of any better skaters to take the titles that they did! Well done Derby Network News!
