On the eve of the fourth WFTDA tournament cycle kicking off in Green Bay, we thought it'd be fun to take a look back at some of the most thrilling conclusions, biggest upsets and most memorable bouts in the the short history of our sport.
Over the last three years, we here at DNN have been bouncing around the nation from Raleigh, NC to Tucson, AZ to follow the tournament scramble. Going through our archives to check out some of the best moments was both a pretty entertaining trip down memory lane and a pretty exciting primer for what 2010's action has for us, and we think you'll find it the same.
Of course, in any top ten list, there's going to be some disagreement about what was left out. Good thing we have a comment section, huh? Tell us your most memorable moments of WFTDA Regional tournaments over the last three years.

What about Kansas City?!?
What about Kansas City?!? First beating AZRD in what I think was a last jam upset, and then shocking the shit out of everyone, esp Rat City, by sweeping Nationals.
beating Rat City
in a 4-point last jam game for the national championship. The closest most exciting championship game there's been. But, that wasn't regionals so I'm sure it'll have to be number 1 in their top 10 championship moments.
Regional upset
Nah, she's talking about when we beat AZRD (national powerhouse at the time) in the 2007 Western Regional game. Total upset. Won it by 4 points with Denise Lightning going to box in the last jam and flipping us off. (Love you Denise!) Still one of my favorite games ever. We secured our spot in the National tournament with that win. Then we went in as complete underdogs at the 4th seed from the West in the 2007 National tournament, taking down the 1st seed Gotham in our first game and ending by defeating the 1st seed from the West Rat City. We wouldn't have been there if we would have lost that close game to AZRD in the regional tournament.

Fav moment
Rat City v Texas game is still one of my favs, I used to watch it recorded from MavTV over and over again, it made rat city one of my favourite teams..it was a different game back then of course, but at the time it blew my mind.
And Philly v Gotham...everyone loves Gotham but everyone wanted SOMEONE to beat them! And in such a way...thought it might be overtime but then I remember the announcer yelling 'SHES GOT THE GHOST POINT! PHILLY HAVE WON' I can't even explain the feeling I had, it was just so epic. EPIC!
fab game
I was in Tucson drunk on Monkey Shine screaming and banging on the hockey walls...that was an AMAZING game!!! Dust Devil FTW.
Twas
Yep, you were when you were finally let out of the trunk.
I thought the balcony was going to literally come crashing down.
errrr
I vaguely remember this trunk you speak of... ;)
that was so fun. i thought we
that was so fun. i thought we were gonna break that balcony
RMRG v Denver
will always be my favorite moment: their rivalry, their athleticism, that they were the two hosting teams; I was shocked and awed by RMRG's brutalizing performance against my Rose City home girls in the previous round and those two terrifying rosters. THE CROWD RUSHED THE TRACK, we got a new rule, the upset, everything about that game was a blast to watch from start to finish! west is best!
South Central regionals is Oct 8-10?
Why did I think there had to be 30 days between the regional playoffs and the championships? Or is that just convenient in case a team wishes to change their charter?
due to scheduling...
WFTDA Sanctioning Committee has changed up the dates by which teams participating in Westerns and South Central Regionals tournaments that advance to Championships have to submit their charters. We're allowing them to submit by a later date determined by their regionals date so that way they have an opportunity in between regionals and Championships to evaluate injuries, retirements, etc and submit their new charter, if they have not used up all 6 submissions for the year previous to this. Teams participating in NC and Easterns, since they have a full 30 days before the Championships, have regular submission deadlines, ie October 5th is the last day to submit.

B.A.D. vs Philly by 4 points?
I seem to recall a certain Kitt Turbo racking up a 19 point jam at the very end of Philly vs B.A.D. at Nationals 2008, bringing us within 4 points of the Liberty Belles and making everyone at the Northwest Knockdown nearly poop their pants.
Sure, we traveled all the way to Portland to lose by 4 in the first round, but we wiped our noses on our sequined shorts and consoled ourselves with the traditional half hour of power.
THAT. Was memorable.
:)

I agree that was very memorable
It also was not a "Regionals Moment" :)
derp!
Thanks Justice...sometimes I'm so broke I can't even pay attention.
:)

It wasn't a regional, but certainly a personal highlight
I'm with you Moxxxie. I was never so proud to call a bout for someone. I loved that BADG team and, as you know, had followed and supported them a long time. Thanks for providing me with the highlight call of my career. I've never gone back to hear it, but I've had a few people tell me the final jam was my best moment. I can't even remember, I had lost my mind!
I did...
I actually did poop my pants.
Sounds like
we're all chomping at the bit for your Most Memorable Nationals Moments, J...
philly/gotham 2009
Probably the best game I ever had in my career. Hopefully I'll play again...
DJ Moxy
I thank you for saving our friendship because if you hadn't included Detroit vs Boston in 2007, I would not have spoken to any of you for a year.
However, the best part was missed: Overtime Jam about to begin. Skaters on the track. Breath holding anticipation, aaand... DJ Moxy drops The Final Countdown.
To this day when I think of that moment I get chills.
seriously.
With all due respect to everyone who's ever spun tunes at a derby event, nobody has come close to the magic DJ Moxy worked at 2007 East Regionals. That was just one perfectly nailed moment in a three-day series. She was amazing.
Honorable mention
I unfortunately don't have the name handy, but 2009 North Central regionals had a DJ who was digging DEEP in game-show themes for each and every referee timeout. Sure, any old hack can throw on the Jeopardy! theme, but it takes a pro to whip out Tic Tac Dough.
DJ Noise
That was Minnesota's resident DJ Noise. Savage Animal did some work during The Brawl, but the game show theme songs during timeouts is one of his trademarks.
Best game ever!
Please tell me this got played as well.
He even drops the Scrabble
He even drops the Scrabble theme.

now THAT was a derby moment
That jam and that song are now fused together forever in my mind.
I'd forgotten that Tic Tac Dough even HAD theme music.
Thanks for leading me to a massive time suck of 70's synth-instrumental cheesy goodness. It's great music to fold laundry to.
Detroit and Minnesota?
2007: "#9 seed Detroit went on to stun #2 seed Minnesota in the quarterfinals"
2010: 7NC Minnesota 118, 2NC Detroit 99
Nice little bit of payback there..
MNRG has never overlooked an opponent since that bout.
Good thing, too. Omaha was fantastic this year. Minnesota used the same team on them that they played against Detroit.
Actually, the Houston moment was Dementia
Dementia, who now skates with Kansas City, was actually the one who pulled Houston away from Dallas in the second-last jam in the 2009 SC. A very under-rated jammer who became moreso after missing a span of time nursing injury prior to that playoff season. Yeah, Misty did make it interesting. I think there was four or five seconds left when she called what became the last jam.
Bob
Madison's upset was the greatest event I'll never remember
The ONLY time in hundreds of after-parties I've been loaded off my ass was after Madison dropped that Windy City bout. Couldn't stand up. O-H, R-G still prides itself on hosting the only party Bob dropped at.
Nice job fellas
It would be hard to pull just 10, but all 10 were on my mental list of amazing moments. If you didn't see the Gotham Philly finish, that remains my favorite bout of all-time. And I've seen a few. Donna past the player she needed right where I was sitting, you could hear her yelling out point totals to the jam ref, trying to be sure they were on the same page. She starts yelling "ghost point, ghost point" the extra point is recognized, she calls the jam. Unbelieveable.
Miss Fortune at the 2007 Dust Devil, for my money, put on the best show I've seen a jammer give us. She was unstoppable and not because the blocking was stellar. Moved through daylight that didn't seem to exist. 301 penalties, if memory serves me correctly, in the Western Regional Championship bout, so it wasn't pretty, but Miss Fortune refused to lose. I don't even recall if she put up huge points, but she just always got the job done in miraculous fashion everytime she took the line.
