Opening Round: #8NC Arch Rival vs #9NC Naptown
10:00 AM, Friday, September 10
The opening game of the tournament pits St. Louis' Arch Rival team against Indianapolis' Naptown. In last year's North Central tournament, Arch Rival came in a few slots higher at #5, but lost their first bout against Cincinnati and got sent to the consolation brackets, where they finished sixth overall. This will be Naptown's first appearance in a WFTDA playoff tournament.
Arch Rival has gone 4-9 in sanctioned play this year. They had a good swing at May's Midwest Brewhaha, where they edged out Tampa Bay 115-110 and easily knocked off Burning River 161-57. Although they went 0-4 in August, most of those losses came against highly regarded teams that made it to last year's WFTDA championship tournament -- Philly, Detroit and Kansas City. They also played a close one against the 6 seed in this tournament, North Star -- North Star pulled it out in a 80-75 final.
Naptown has been intermittently successful this year, with their high point arguably coming at May's Spring Roll tournament where they managed to stick right with very tough Detroit for the first half, though Detroit took control in the second half and won 150-94. Results since then haven't fully reflected that potential, though, as they lost a close one to DC 122-106 at ECE and barely squeaked by Maine, 100-96. Their most recent result was another narrow conclusion, a five-point victory over the Chicago Outfit on August 14.
It's worth noting that both teams are historically known for low-scoring battles. Naptown has played in the first and third lowest-scoring WFTDA bouts ever (a 59-32 loss to Cincinnati in March 2008, and a 63-49 win over Brewcity the next month). The sole previous meeting between Arch Rival and Naptown was also a relatively low-scoring affair -- in March 2009, Arch Rival came out on top 93-61.
Whatever the final score, whichever team gets out of this one is going to have their work cut out for them, as the reward for victory is a matchup with top seed Windy City, who have never lost to an opponent from the region.

Weather in GreenBay!
Pack your jeans and long sleeved t's and warm up jackets. It's looking like upper 60's - low 70's during the day and chilly at night. Beautiful Fall Weather in 'Da Great Up Nort'.
YES!!!
I can't stand hot weather so this is perfect for me. Its flannel weather in the north woods.
I'm stoked!
Tournament season - woooo!
Don't gimme no pop, no pop -
Don't gimme no tea, no tea -
Just gimme that milk, moo moo moo moo -
Wisconsin milk, moo moo moo moo!
The real question...
...what's being sold as seasonal beers right now from New Glarus, Lake Louie, and Capital Brewing?
We're entering the state of a million brewpubs to watch derby. A man's got to plan.
Seventeen hours of roller derby (plus short ref breaks)? In two days? Outstanding.
mmm...beer
Capital: Autmnal Fire Doppelbock, Oktoberfest
New Glarus: Oktoberfest; haven't seen it around yet
Lake Louie: Milk Stout in Nov. That's right. Non-vegan beer.
Great Dane: No regular autumn recipe, but they always have something
Titletown: Local to GB, never tried
Lakefront: Usually have a Pumpkin beer and an Oktoberfest
Tyrnena: Another pumpkin, Oktoberfest, and a good Scotch Ale usually, but haven't seen it
That's all I know of offhand. I'm sure other cheeseheads will be happy to fill in the gaps.
And that is why we love you, Gnosis.
Not for your technical skill in getting the boutcasts and DNN to work; for your ability to go above and beyond the call for beer fans.
I also noticed that NG Enigma is still available in a lot of western Wisconsin. Those who like their beers sour should scoop up every fourpack that they can find. A sour brown/raspberry tart blend. Put it away in a dark corner of the basement and drink it in a year.
I was going to suggest...
I was going to suggest the Autumnal Fire - if you haven't tried it, it's delicious. I might just bring some up to Green Bay... Capital should have just released it... Beats that 3.2 beer in Minnesota, by like 5.5% ;)
GB local brews
Hey Gnosis! Good suggestions, but let me add some more local stuff---
Titletown -- Johnny Blood, Dark Helmet and Canadeo Gold are all really good beers. They also have a good octoberfest brew. Also this place is literally 1 block from Frozen Codebase (that's us, the makers of the Jam City Rollergirls Wii game). So Titletown gets a big thumbs up. Unfortunately it's in another part of town from the tournament
Hinterland -- Pale Ale, and some others. But the Pale Ale is available in bottles at gas stations and liquor stores so thats a plus. It has a big white H on a black label. Hinterland is also 1 block from Frozen Codebase (do you sense a theme, I do!).
Legends -- I'm not a fan of this place, but it's a chain of brewpubs around town...
We can get real beer in Minnesota
3.2% is the stuff they sell in grocery and convenience stores. Regular liquor stores have the real stuff.
Okay, Carson, you do know
Okay, Carson, you do know that Lake Louie isn't even available in LaCrosse or Waukesha, right? Just for that, I'm going to have to hit Woodmans today.
Fantasy Derby Pool?
Has anyone ever set up a Fantasy Derby pool for regionals before? We (Atlanta) are looking at doing one, but was wondering if anyone had any tips. =) Right now the idea is choose 5 players, 1 jammer and 4 blockers. You get points for the amount the team wins by: 1x points per jammer and 1/4x points per blocker. Hmm... maybe choose 10 players so you have to have one from each team. 0 points if your player is on a losing team. Any other ideas?

Publish. Publish. Publish.
Yeah, come on, WFTDA. Things that don't need to be secret should be published. Player stats are just one example. Open up your archives!
In full agreement
In my attempts to get people interested in derby, I have had some tell me that if they could follow stats and make fantasy teams, then they would definitely get in on it more. Releasing stats would be a huge step to making derby even more popular.
And if you want to hire someone to manage those stats, let me know :D
...
We actually have access to those stats, one of the many perks of being a proud member of the WFTDA. We want to keep it simple, though. Something that anyone could do, with relatively little prep time. If we come up with something do able and fun, we will share for sure.
Just wanted to see if anyone had done this, something similar or had ideas on how to make it work.
We have WFTDA stats of all bouts available to members?
We actually have access to those stats, one of the many perks of being a proud member of the WFTDA.
I've been trying to figure out where they're posted, I've only seen stats of our own games... are they on the WFTDA site?
STATS!
STATS!!! YAY!
D Train has been collecting stats for the Eastern Regionals program.
I want to emphasize what a GREAT thing stats are to skaters AND to fans.
In most sports this is how fans geek out on the sport. They compare stats.
As a skater I'm able to use that information to find threats on another team, who are up and coming skaters, etc.
It is NOT that difficult to crunch the numbers. Especially if someone has taken 10 minutes to explain to to you.
Maybe I'm just a numbers nerd like that, accountant by trade, but I think that derby is FULL OF NERDS!
WFTDA has a standard form for stats...so the public should be easily trained in what each column means.
Please! Bring on the STATS!
Thanks! :D
Holly
swan song?
“Legal troubles mean this tournament will likely be the swan song for original
Cincinnati all-star Sadistic Sadie”
Does that mean Sadie will or will not be playing? She’s a force, I’d like to see
the Sadie Show one last time. Coulda been worse, at least she didn’t set off
pipe bombs. Sadie will definitely be missed.
Totally unofficial and biased guide to Green Bay for non-locals
(yes I said biased!) Because... this isn't really an official or censored list but I wanted to throw some thoughts out there for the huge influx of derby people, the likes of which most of Green Bay has never seen (save myself, Rev Norb and maybe a handful of Fox Cityz Foxz-- which is actually in Appleton not green bay, but hey- it's not far away). ANYWAY here we go:
FROZEN CODEBASE GUIDE TO SURVIVING GREEN BAY
PRINT ME FOR FUN IN THE FROZEN TUNDRA!
(I don't know addresses for any of these but google is your friend)
AMUSEMENT:
1. Bay Beach. This amusement park has totally cheap rides, like 20 cents or something. And there is a miniature train. I'd imagine you could fit alot of rollergirls on the miniature train.
2. Wildlife sanctuary. This is near bay beach. It has some ducks and stuff.
3. Tundra Lodge: this is our indoor waterpark. you can get wristbands for the day, it's good for kids.
4. Lambeau Field : some sort of sports team plays in this place, I don't really know if you would have heard of them cuz they aren't a big deal outside of Green Bay or anything. ;)
5. City Deck: in the downtown area-- our mayor built some kind of weird deck with permanent lawn chairs on it and large ceramic turtles. We're not really sure what to do with it so maybe you can figure it out.
EATS:
1.Jake's Pizza on East Main (they serve it to you ON the table but it's oh so good)
2.Los Banditos on East Main (and also on W. Mason)-- good mexican, not really authentic but good
3.Various mexican places on East main -- more authentic mexican food
4.Victoria's on Bay Settlement -- this is way out on the east side by University of Wisconsin Green Bay. Great italian food
5.Blackstone -- this is a diner, truckstop food. BUT it's open 24hrs and has some interesting local characters at 3AM. Go in there in full derby garb at 3 in the morning and you're bound to have some tales to tell. I took an executive producer in here once from one of our video game publishers and some male prostitute tried to pick him up. Yup that kind of place. Good times. That said, I love their mash potatoes and gravy.
6.Farr's Grove -- supposedly the best fish fry in town, but its out in Howard (but don't worry- everything in green bay is within 15min of each other even if its a "suburb").
7.Kroll's East and West -- I think they are sponsoring this or something. Anyway the food there is good but I don't remember the street name. I think one is near the stadium.
8.ROCKABILLY PIZZA --- This has recently become my new favorite restaraunt in green bay. They have a THAI restaraunt on one side and a pizza joint on the other complete with punk/rockabilly stuff everywhere. Go in here and mention Rev Norb and they will probably think you are a local.
9.Al's Hamburger -- on N. Washington. Best burgers in town and its just a goofy place
10. Our Family Restaraunt -- on S. Broadway-- this is the part of town that looks like detroit. But don't let it fool you, this place rocks. 'specially for breakfast Order the Jack and Daniels Steak and Eggs. It's the best.
11. Cafe Espresso-- or as some call it Cafe Depresso. This is where goths used to hang out and drink coffee but now I think it's emo kids or painters or something. But all teasing asside, the food here is DAMN good especially the nachos.
Vegetarian type food:
1. Kavarna on Broadway
2. Vita - also on Broadway
3. There is some other place but I am a carnivore so I don't know what it's called.
BARS
1. Crunchy Frog on broadway-- This is where the aftermath of punk hangs out. This used to be the town which Fugazi would play in but SKIP madison and milwaukee. (yeah, that doesn't happen anymore). But anyway they do get some good bands here occasionaly-- and on nights they don't the jukebox is always good. only place in town you are going to find the Didjits on the juke box. Also cheap beer, really cheap
2. Titletown -- The upstairs bar of this place is pretty cool
3. St Brendan's Inn -- This is an irish bar, a bit too posh of an irish bar for my tastes usually HOWEVER-- this is where you will get the best guiness in town.
4. Brewbakers-- of the frat type bars on Washington, this is the only one which really stands out to me, but I am an elitist. It's kinda misnamed though because they don't brew anything. Monday nights used to be ambient techno night or something, I dont know if it still is because I am always working until 3AM.
5. XS -- this place is on east main. A LGBT dance club, open 7days a week... and also a cool bar upstairs. sundays are "straight night" but not really.
6. IQ's -- this place has bands sometimes and a decent vibe. It's on University Ave, and sometimes gets a college type crowd... which you don't get much in GB unless you go to DePere.
SHOPPING:
1. There is a mall on Oneida street-- baypark square, it has some stores.
2. We have some other shopping districts: broadway is one of them. Others are Military Ave and Mason St. Almost everything you need however, you can find on Oneida. But that's assuming you don't mind chain stores...
COFFEE
Kavarna on Broadway
Urban Frog on Broadway
MICROBREWS
Titletown -- near the corner of Main and Broadway
Hinterland -- near the corner of Main and Broadway
Legends -- near the malls or something
I like Our Family restaurant
I like Our Family restaurant because they have something called "Uncle Norb's Pancake" on the menu. Contrast this with the Blackstone's "Who Died?" Omelet if you will.
But, that said, Rock-A-Billy
But, that said, Rock-A-Billy Pizza is the official unofficial place to go these days. That General Tso's pizza is pretty boss. I have yet to try the deep-fried hot dogs, but you have GOT to respect any jernt that names its all-meat pizza after Tesco Vee.
But, THAT said, they'd better
But, THAT said, they'd better fix that Pizz-A-Cone machine, because AMERICA NEEDS PIZZ-A-CONES, GOL DANGIT!!!
We're the Pizza and You Suck
you have GOT to respect any jernt that names its all-meat pizza after Tesco Vee.
Please tell me it's called the "dumping ground."
Ka-BING!
Ka-BING!
General Tso's Pizza?!?
I may not go back to Minnesota. Norb, you need a co-announcer?
also roller rinks and music stores
ROLA-RENA ROLLER SKATE CENTER, 731 Morris Avenue
This place is kinda close to the arena. It's owned by a ex-figure skater or something. We went here before making Jam City to get the feeling of motion on skates down.
There was another place in town but it closed and was an exercise equipment place for a while but now it's some kind of church.
Also there is a skate shop on Broadway called Surf N Bird, but I think they only sell skateboard stuff.
And finally, if you need to buy music while in town go to Exclusive Co, on dousman (and roughly broadway). They are supporters of derby and sell tix for foxz events.
Roller Derby Saved My Soul
Now let me get this straight, for entertainment in Green Bay there's a miniature train, a duck pond, an indoor pool, a football field, and clay turtles. Small wonder that the main activity seems to be to get totally wasted on beer.
yup, that's green bay
Southbay--- yup, you got it!
But don't forget about the big city deck thing the mayor built. It's pretty damn fancy. There's alot of wood planks and some wooden lawn chairs. I think you can get wasted on the city deck, but I'm not sure what else it's good for.

Sadies Swan Song...
Actually you guys have it wrong. Sadie was suspended by WFTDA so she cannot play at the regionals. Kind of a bummer for this to come out right before regionals. Would have liked to see her skate one more time.
http://cincinnatirollergirls.com/blog/caesar/2010-playoffs-preview
when did that happen?
Sadie skated against the B.A.D. Girls two weeks ago...the suspension must have been a relatively recent (and quiet) development.
When did that happen
I am not sure. I am not a skater just a fan but I saw it on the site today. It must have just been this week which really sucks and seems like weird timing to be right before finals. Seems like a rather harsh punishment for a white collar crime. I know Cincinnati suspended her from the last home game but I guess WFTDA decided that wasn't enough for them.
Yes, very recent
Sadie was listed on the roster DNN received from the tournament hosts earlier this week. I've updated the preview to reflect her absence.
Timing
Well I guess that answers that question. Sadie was suspended some time this week by WFTDA. Once again really strange timing for something broke in the news 4 months ago. I think someone's afraid og Sadie. :-) I would be.
Afraid og Sadie!
King og discredits the rest og the Cinci team if people think everything lies within one player. If the team is good enough, they should be able to handle all og the North Central teams :-)
I don't know though, I'm just a fan not a skater.
Bigger Rollerfan
I didn't say Cincinnati couldn't still win, just the timing seemed odd which is not something I pointed out but rather another poster. I didn't know Saide was skating just two weeks ago. I really have no idea of how the decision was made or why there was delay of 3 months. Other than the breif mention on the Cincinnati web site there has been nothing mentioned on the suspension so I am left a little confused.
Cincy beat Brew City pretty easily during the last home game without Sadie so I sure they can do it again with ease. I am afraid I have to agree with Tank that while I love to watch Cincy, I think they are going to get beat by Windy City. I do think there is a decent chance to win against Madison although once again, if I had to bet, I would put my money on Madison.
DNN fucked up again
Sadie was listed on the roster DNN received from the tournament hosts earlier this week. I've updated the preview to reflect her absence.
DNN, can't you get anything right? My sources indicated yesterday's Cincy roster was very different from what you posted. It should have read:
4 Sadistic Sadie // 5 Sadistic Sadie // 6 Sadistic Sadie // 11 Sadistic Sadie // 13 Sadistic Sadie // 15 Sadistic Sadie // 18 Sadistic Sadie // 21 Sadistic Sadie // 29 Sadistic Sadie // 32 Sadistic Sadie // 33 Sadistic Sadie // 43 Sadistic Sadie // 44 Sadistic Sadie // 66 Sadistic Sadie // 69 Sadistic Sadie // 83 Sadistic Sadie // 85 Sadistic Sadie // 86 Sadistic Sadie
all Sadie all the time
Yeah that was pretty funny. DNN said to check the statement on the Cincinnati website but it doesn't say much.
Tournament Time = A whole new game!!!!!
Forget everything you think you know about the teams heading into tournament play. Forget everything you have seen. Forget what you think might happen. It is time. It is time for real. I can guarantee you that the teams that are going to be making a real run at the national championship, to put it in a Texan twang, y'all ain't seen shit yet. Everything up to this point has just been practice. Now you will see what everyone REALLY has. No more hiding it, time to get it on!!!!! Why I'm more excited than a trust fund baby on their 18th birthday!!!!! To all the skaters: good luck, kick ass, skate hard and skate fast! To all support staff: love ya! To all ref's: call it down the middle kids. The time has come. To the best sport in the world and everyone involved I raise an icy cold Lonestar to you all!!!!!
See y'all in Chicago this November...
<3 Big Tom
