2009 was the first year that 7 seed Carolina failed to advance to the WFTDA championship tournament; they'll try again but will have to defeat both DC and Philly to have a chance. Photo: A Boy Named Tsunami.

The final bout of Day 1 ends with Philly starting a quest for a repeat of the Eastern title they took from Gotham in 2009.
Like Gotham, Philly looks like a good bet to reach the final this year. Over the last two years, Philly has only one loss against an Eastern Region team other than Gotham -- that one coming in a August 2009 game against Charm City in which Philly sat most of their first-string players and lost 149-74. When Philly and Charm met again three weeks later at the 2009 regionals, Philly solidly beat them by a somewhat eerie final score of 149-74. This year, Philly has been playing mostly out-of-region, with their only sanctioned Eastern action coming against Boston (a 137-52 win for Philly) and Dutchland (a 172-38 win for Philly).
If Philly gets out of the quarterfinals as expected, they'll meet either Boston or Montreal in the semifinals. History suggests that Charm City would be Philly's most dangerous non-Gotham opponent in the tournament, but they're unlikely to meet this weekend unless Philly suffers an early upset or Charm manages to shock Gotham in the other semifinal.
Philly has a new weapon on the jam line for the 2010 tournament -- like Gotham, they picked up an A-list Rat City jammer transfer in Miss Fortune. Added to a crew that includes Shenita Stretcher, Mo Pain, Persephone, Elle Viento and Teflon Donna, the acquisition of Fortune gives Philly one of the deepest jammer lines in the sport today. And like Gotham, they have a very smart and strong blocker loadout that works exceptionally well together, with Heavy Flo, Ivana Rock and Olivia Face particularly hard-hitters.
