Opening Round: #8E Providence vs #9E Dutchland
10:00 AM, Friday, September 24
If the last meeting between Providence and Dutchland was any indication, the opening bout of Easterns may very well lead to a minor rankings upset right off the bat. The teams played in Dutchland very recently on September 11 and Dutchland hammered the visitors in a 158-85 final.
The result there would seem to suggest that the two teams have been on different trajectories since just a few months ago. They had a shared opponent this year in Carolina -- in March, Providence came within just one point of Carolina in a controversial 111-110 final, while Carolina had considerably less trouble with Dutchland in June, beating them 160-85.
Dutchland hasn't lost since then, though, currently riding a 3-game winning streak that also saw them solidly defeat Hammer City (132-79) and dominate Harrisburg (260-78). Altogether, Dutchland is 6-4 on the 2010 campaign, but their only wins over tournament-level competition have come against Providence and bottom seed DC.
Providence has shown sparks of great potential during an up-and-down 4-6 season, but haven't been able to significantly increase their standing. Along with the near-win against Carolina, they also went down to the wire with Championships-bound Minnesota at ECE, losing 131-127. They had a one-month residency on the unofficial DNN Top 25 after delivering a surprisingly solid defeat of South Central team Nashville 171-82 in July, but dropped back off again the following month when they barely squeaked by DC 114-103.
For Dutchland, it's their first-ever appearance in the WFTDA regionals. Providence has made it to all three, but their postseason record is not very good at 2-6.
The reward for winning here is a date with the Gotham juggernaut later in Friday action; Providence had to face them in the quarterfinals of last year's Eastern Regional, where they were pounded 181-25. Dutchland has never played Gotham.

I'm so excited...
i feel like jessie spano. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bflYjF90t7c
can easterns be more exciting than NCs? i don't know, but i can hope.
too funny
that was hilarious.
Yesss...
Best Saved by the Bell episode EVER.
chinese cheker
chinese cheker transfered from nashville to dc. she is a standout blocker who once used the pseudonym peking truck. that one fits her hitting style more closely.
A little less thong in the room
You forgot to mention Princess America, Justice. I don't see her on the Carolina roster. If she isn't playing, wouldn't this be the first WFTDA tournament she hasn't participated in? Regional or National? or even pre-WFTDA any sort of skating event? Am I mistaken? Am I nerd? Don't answer that.
It's true - Princess America
It's true - Princess America is not rostered for 2010 Eastern Regionals. I can't remember if she was at the 2006 Dust Devil, but I'm guessing she was. She did play in every WFTDA tournament from 2007 Easterns through 2009 Easterns, when Carolina failed to advance to the championship tournament.
NOOO!!!!!
:(
She absolutely was
Princess America absolutely was at the 2006 Dust Devil (the first WFTDA Championship Tournament, and first modern roller derby tournament of any kind, held in Tucson in February of that year). I'm pretty sure she skated out with a giant US flag. It was a very, very derby moment.
Carolina finished 8th that year, and made a lasting impression with their big accents, big smiles, and big skating despite generally small stature -- what they lacked in physical size they made up in heart.
It is just about impossible to imagine a WFTDA tournament season without Princess America. We'll miss you!
No one's thinging a thong
Yes, PA is taking a sabbatical...
and Eva Lye will be participating in this regionals...her first since 2007, too...I think.
Gotham v Philly
I know there's a lot of derby to be played between now and Sunday, but I'm already thinking about the potential and inevitible Gotham/Philly (read: unstoppable force/immovable object) final. I honestly think they are the two best derby teams in the country. Flat track derby is at its best when they go at it.
Carolina's not lacking...
Even though we'll all miss Princess' giant smile on the track, CRG is not lacking in the talent department going into easterns. With the return of vet skaters Celia Fate and Eva Lye and having a solid core of vet skaters that have competed on the highest level with undeniable rookie talent (omg can't wait to see Thrashley on the track again) I'm really excited to see them wow us this weekend. I'm not expecting to see a #7 to #2 jump like in NCs, but then again, was anyone expecting that?!
... having another Jessie Spano moment ...
truth be told...
Celia Fate's a rookie. This is her first season with Carolina's All-stars. She was kinda preoccupied having surgeries during her league's first 4 years & was injured before her league's first home game. When the announcers say she's "a vet", they're referring to how she's beat everyone of those big talkers in a carbomb, kegstand or danceoff contest. She also has a fabulous cape.
I'm Celia Fate and I wholeheartedly misrepresent this message.

Best candidate advertisement EVAR!
Apple Smacks
Sort of a similar story compared to NSRG's Apple Smacks. I think she's had four rookie seasons now.
Might as well throw my predictions out there...
Providence vs Dutchland = Toss-up. Why? Even though Dutchland just beat Providence on 9/11 this gave Providence a chance to see what & how Dutchland was playing right now. Give any team that close in the rankings an up-close look and a few weeks practice and we might see a different result. Or not. Honestly, I haven't seen enough of either team to go on a limb here.
Carolina vs DC = Carolina win. Although DC looked good in a win over Charm City's Speed Regime that was a win over a home team and not anything you can really bank on. Other than that Dc's season hasn't exactly been stellar. Carolina has beaten 3 teams in the tournament (DC is one of them) & looked good in thier loss to Atlanta.
Charm City vs Steel City = Charm win. Yes, Charm has more losing games than most people would have liked this season, those were "quality losses" (if there is such a thing) to top 10 teams. A few were even blow-outs however I think Charm has gotten thier footing back after wins over Texas, Boston & non-WFTDA San Diego. Steel City's record has gotten fat on lower ranked squads, so unless Steel decides to prove me wrong I see Charm winning.
Boston vs Montreal = Boston win. I am just picking Boston because I have seen them play more and wouldn't we rather have Montreal providing the halftime entertainment at the Championships rather than being in them (although I will give New Skids a tip of the hat for beating Tampa).
Gotham vs winner of Dutchland/Providence = Gotham win. Unless the whole Gotham team comes down with food poisoning AND Suzy Hotrod & Bonnie Thunders are in an elevator accident this should be an easy win for Gotham. Sorry Dutch or Prov... you can still play for 5th place though.
Philly vs DC/Carolina winner = Philly win. Basically just a tune-out game for Philly (much like Gotham's first bout) I don't see this going any other way except for Philly winning. Maybe a pro underdog alien invasion might change things but I doubt it. Libery Belles over the aliens by 30.
Gotham vs Charm/Steel City winner = Gotham wins. Ok, since I already picked Charm to win over Steel City I am going to assume (I know, I know) that they will be playing & losing to Gotham. Not that I don't think Charm has a chance but it's pretty slim so I see Gotham going to the Regional Championships and Charm bouting for the 3rd place spot.
Philly vs Boston/Montreal winner = Philly win...but they are going to have to work for it. Going with the premise Boston beats Montreal, I see them giving Philly a good bout here. I won't say it will go down to the last jam but I think Boston is going to put up more of a fight than you would think. Still, Philly will go on to play Gotham on Sunday and Boston is going to face Charm for the 3rd entry into the Championships.
Boston vs Charm = Charm wins. This is a really hard one to pick. Both have losing records on the season (remember those "quality loses") and Charm did recently defeat Boston. I think this is going to be a back and forth bout and really come down to the last 2 jams (maybe the last 2 seconds). However, I think Charm will still pull it out but I wouldn't be upset to hear "I'm Shipping Up To Boston" playing after this one is over.
Gotham vs Philly = Gotham wins. This is the one everyone all weekend has been waiting for. So unless some huge upset happens earlier I can't help be see these two meeting for 1st place in the East Region. Now, while I think this will be a great bout I don't see Philly taking out the Gotham juggernaut short of a key injury or two happening to the Gotham side. Even then I think Gotham has enough weapons to pull out a win. No matter what happens we will still be seeing both of these teams at Uproar on the Lake Shore in November.
OK, that's it. I am not going to do the losers brackets because while there will be some great bouts on that side, you are out the running and playing for respect. So unless respect comes with airfare and a weekend pass we won't be seeing any of these teams in Chicago. Except if they have a bunch of great dance numbers and provide more giggles than a box of puppies. I didn't use Flat Track Stats, Derbymatic, DNN's list of scores from old games or that homeless guy in New Orleans that uses tarot cards to tell your fortune. I just relied on my gut feelings and having watched more derby than the FDA recommended yearly allowance. I think we all are in for a great weekend of tournament play flavored with some Derby Doll & MDC action.
/Go Magic City Misfits!!!!
//Don't forget Texas & Windy City are also playing this weekend. That should be good!
buuuuuut

Even though Philly won last year and I don't remember (though absolutely could be wrong) an injury taking out any of the Gotham roster?
Just saying! Either way, if this is the end game, I expect it to be every bit as exciting and 'holy eff I'm about to explode from the suspense' as last year!
Dutchland is so ready! Start
Dutchland is so ready! Start watching us!
I would have but
ECDX seemed to be having troubles with the video (and Battle on the Bank was at the same time and their video was butter smooth). Same with any bout broadcast from Montreal: slow, choppy, painful to watch. Basically like trying to watch streaming video on an ISDN connection. Other than that I wasn't aware of any other bouts Dutchland had that might have been available on the internet.
Good luck!
Good luck Dutchland! I wish I could be there to see that bout.
And good luck Charm City. I'd really love to see you all make it to nationals.
SKIDS!

While that halftime show was superawesomesauce. I'd much rather be in Chicago screaming my fool head off for my fellow Canucks as they compete as the FIRST EVAR Canadian team participating in the WFTDA Championships. One thing Montreal has shown us is that they keep coming out stronger and stronger.
And if they don't make it to Chicago there sure as hell better be another Skids halftime show.
GO SKIDS! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdxY4HiZDao&feature=player_embedded

I like when we are underestimated, it makes it even more fun when we win, especially surprisingly.

Can't wait to call this bout on DNN

If there is a chance of a major upset this weekend, this is the matchup.
Si vous n'aimez pas roller derby de Montréal .... Vous n'aimez pas la vie.
Mesdames Bonne chance
Like I said
it was based just on the fact I have seen Boston play more. Now if someone wants to bribe me with some Tim Horton's and one of Grapes's sport coats I might change this pick.
I think Beyonslay was out all
I think Beyonslay was out all of last year. ???
beyonslay out
True, it's hard to play derby while pregnant. She was out for the year. I, despite rumors, am not pregnant, and look forward to skating with PRG when I am healed, (hopefully Nov/Dec*keep your fingers crossed for me*). So, I'll be at this tournament cheering on my Belles, hoping they go all the way again. I miss this game so much it hurts, inside and out.
See you all this weekend!
Drugs, PRG for life (can't keep an old lady down for long)

Kat Von D'stroya?
Where's she at? formerly of Detroit, currently of Steel City (I think), I don't see her on the roster.
Ohio Valley Roller Girls
She created a league :)
You can find them on Facebook so far.
Skids Skiddles and the rest of the Rainbow
You know, I've realised that maybe because we are such good entertainers off the track, I would understand people wanting us to stay off it because of their fear of facing off such sexy, fun, and kick-ass canadian derby players WHO CAN actually play some serious derby. The best of both worlds! Go Skiddles!

I rather suspect that's part of the appeal.
jesus cristo
What the hell's gonna happen to me this tourney? Gang bang under the bleachers? Should I be afraid?
nah
I've seen you skate. A trap the goat, even under the bleachers, isn't going to work on you. They should be afraid.
:P
Boston. Montreal. Fantastic. Amazing.
1. Boston is currently playing Montreal.
2. Montreal's team is named the New Skids On The Block, which is a pun on "New Kids On The Block," a Boston-based band.
3. Boston's team features a skater named "Maura Buse." "More Abuse" was a song off of the first album released by the Spaceshits, a Montreal band.
This is fantastic AND amazing. Believe it!
Five. (Three, sir.) Three.
4. There was a jammer matchup of Killary Clinton against Georgia W. Tush.
Actual 5
There was a matchup of Lil' Paine vs Lil Mama. If Boston plays Charm City later there is the possible matchup of Lil' Paine vs I.M. Pain
......DERDS!!!!
aaaaargh........DERDS (derby nerds, lol)

Go OLY!
srs question: who was that kid in the ironman costume?
I think this was Sunday. He tried playing along while I did my plyo jumping warm up and his dad (?) might have taken a photo. I want this photo! That kid was precious.
I blame the Tournament World haze
I know of the kid you're talking about, but for the life of me I can't connect the dots on why because the father figure (not his dad) wanted his picture taken really early in the morning that day and I was relatively hung over.
Somewhere in the archives of the weekend is a picture of the kid and the father figure. Once I find it and post it, that may lead to some answers.
