Weekly Rollup and Open Thread, 8/27/2010
Over the past couple of years, Fort Wayne video guy Porch Moon has been critical in DNN's coverage of area events, including May's two-track Spring Roll tournament and last weekend's Windy City vs. Rocky Mountain bout. At the afterparty for that bout, some Really Bad Person broke Rule 0 and stole approximately $2,500 of computers and video equipment out of Porch's car. We very rarely use profanity on this site, but seriously, fuck that guy. You can help Porch raise money to replace his stuff by going to Wicked Skatewear and buying this shirt.
The derby community lost Kitten Vicious of the Rocktown Rollers (Harrisonburg, VA) in a car accident on Wednesday. Rebecca Martinez remembers her here.
The marketing push for the derby video game (previously "WFTDA Rollergirls," now re-branded as "Jam City Rollergirls") starts to pick up with a promotion at this weekend's Fox Cityz Foxz game.
WFTDA releases a white-knuckle thriller that'll have you turning pages well into the night.
Finally, Uma Plata sends along a fun little highlight reel from Demolition City (Evansville, IN) vs. Nashville Brawl Stars, additionally notable for the fact that Demolition City totally has its own theme song and it ain't half bad.

Ooooooo, time travel!
Looks like we're getting a month ahead of ourselves here.
Penalty couches?
Now that's one of the best ideas I've seen in quite a while.
DCRD! WHOOOO!
Damn that song is catchy. Might be the best derby related song I errr heard.
Seriously...
FUCK THAT GUY.
Also, I <3 DCRD!

Thanks G. No-Evil.. much appreciated.
Demolition City is rad and
Demolition City is rad and always have great videos!
Less rap in derby.
More punk in derby.
The end.
Punk is dead
'nough said
Can't spell "crap" without "rap."
Also, disco sucks.
The Unbearable Suckness of Journey
Yes, disco sucks, cRAP sucks but Journey ubersucks most of all.
Wheels go round and round in my mind...
You're just saying that because Steve Perry uses bacon grease to make his hair look that way.
One out of three ain't bad
Trying not to roll my eyes 360 at the cliched rap comments, but at least this one seems to be accurate:
Journey was never good.
NEVER.
PLEASE STOP BELIEVEING
YES
YES
and also
YES
Thank you to Bottle of Smoke for quite possibly my favorite subject heading of all time.

PLEASE STOP BELIEVING, JOURNEY WAS NEVER GOOD!!!
COUNTERPOINT
BONUS CONTENT!!!
But the atari game ...
Journey's Journey Escape atari 2600 video game ... it nullifies every point one can make about their pop cultural significance. Even Chuck Norris fans try to brush off or ignore his involvement in Chuck Norris Superkicks/Spike's Peak flip game because they know how much of a buzzkill being associated with Yar's Revenge can be.
-Wheel Smith, who peaked early in his gaming career, beating both Raiders of the Lost Ark and E.T. on the 2600, but currently can't even run fast with a knife or get a boom headshot.
Yikes, E.T.
You mean THIS E.T.?
"The end result is often cited as one of the worst video games released, and was one of the biggest commercial failures in video gaming history. E.T. is frequently cited as a contributing factor to Atari's massive financial losses during 1983 and 1984. As a result of overproduction and returns, unsold cartridges were also buried in a New Mexico landfill. The game's commercial failure and resulting effects on Atari are frequently cited as a contributing factor to the video game industry crash of 1983."
I can confirm
I owned it. It was astonishingly bad. I spent a fairly ridiculous amount of time playing it, I think just trying to figure out what the hell was the point of the game. Never did.
You kids today, with your physics engines and your motion control...
Yes!
That's the one! And Hurt's analysis is spot on!
Yeah, but Pitfall made
Yeah, but Pitfall made everything better.
I had the Journey Escape game, and you have to admit that the game's version of "don't stop believing" anticipated the whole 8-bit indie rock thing by a good 25 years. So, kudos there.
atari
When I watch my son play video games I often think to myself, "yeah, but I'd destroy him on Yar's Revenge..." haha
**this** close...
I was ***this*** close to deleting my account here because of this last post. Thankfully I remembered that in order to hear that wretched noise I'd have to hit play.
NEVER WILL I DO THAT!
Now shut up and go listen to KISS or something...

Journey is the anti viagra
Thank you to Bottle of Smoke for quite possibly my favorite subject heading of all time.
PLEASE STOP BELIEVING, JOURNEY WAS NEVER GOOD!!!
You're welcome Val. It's my mission in life to stir up shitstorms. Derby folks can be divided into 2 camps. No, not those who love/hate the "slow" game but those who love/hate Journey.
And Thanks a lot Justice for dredging up memories of all my pathetic attempts at picking up girls in local rock clubs where it was "mandatory" to slow dance when the band played anything by Journey. Talk about coitus interruptus.
Not our fault
You couldn't close the deal. I mean really, if you couldn't get lucky after "Separate Ways"?????
I liked how "Any Way You Want
I liked how "Any Way You Want It" worked in the context of Caddyshack, which was the first R-rated movie into which i ever snuck.
How about this?
The only problem is that it's seventeen seconds too short for a full jam.

Punk Rock Chix
Thanks, John. +1 for the Soviettes link.
Where were all the punk rock girl bands when I was young and grinding the girl next door to the putrid sounds of Journey?
Here's one, featuring a certain jammer from Gotham.
I'll see your Soviettes and raise you Kissy Kamikaze.

C'mon Punks. Pile on now before the pro Journey crowd shouts us down.
That's more like it.
'Nuff said.
R.I.P. Kitten Vicious
My Deepest Condolences to The Family, Friends and Teammates of Kitten Vicious. This is a senseless tragedy that shows how precious life is. You are in my prayers tonight.
so sorry
Sorry to hear about that. Thats is truly sad.
sad indeed
my sympathies to all who knew her
RIP Kitten...
That article was very touching and I am SO sorry for the awful loss.

Tallahassee vs. Huntsville
Not sure why it hasn't made it to the score updates yet, but Tallahassee's Capital Punishment came out on top over Huntsville on Saturday.
Tallahassee had, by far, one of the most fun weekends up there. The Huntsville girls know how to play a great game and host an amazing after party. We can't wait to play again in two weeks!
The perils of data entry
Thought I'd plugged this in last night, but apparently I neglected to click "save," or something. All better now!
I probably wouldn'tve taken
I probably wouldn'tve taken to derby so ardently had they not been playing Stiff Little Fingers, the Undertones and the Heartbreakers at one of the earliest bouts i attended. I still remember doing a double-take the first time Bonnie Thunders skated past me and i noticed her name. Like...OH MY GOD I HAVE JUST BEEN PASSED BY A JOHNNY THUNDERS PUN! Now they pretty much just play crap at bouts, and the afterparties are worse. Oh well, i suffer for my art. Well, someone else's art, really.
Steve Perry is the Antichrist
I remember back in '08 at my first bout hearing Bad Brains "Pay to Cum" and thinking any sport that uses punk for it's soundtrack is cool. Even if it's only 1 out of every 10 songs. Punk will always be fringe. That's why the bean counters changed it's name to new wave in the early 80's to make $ off it.
Punk is not dead, it's resting.
And Journey still sucks.
I'll tell you something even
I'll tell you something even more heartbreaking, i used to have that original "Pay to Cum" 45, and i GAVE IT AWAY to someone. I had a Finnish pen-pal in 1982, and we would occasionally send each other packages of records from our countries so we could stay hipper than everyone else. I put together a package of records he wanted, and i thought it was a little skimpy, because he sent me a ton of cool Finnnish punk stuff, so i tossed in "Pay to Cum" because i already had the a-side on the "Let Them Eat Jellybeans" LP, and the b-side was kinda blah. The financial repercussions of THAT particular bold stroke of genius are being felt to this day.
Immutable law of karma
Think of the great joy or confusion that Bad Brains 45 brought to your Finnish friend. 4 black Rastafarians from D.C. deconstructing punk, spinning it around inside their bad brains and spitting out something totally unique. Hardcore Punk.
A poor financial decision, perhaps. But my spiritual adviser, Baba Rum Raisin, would say it was a very wise decision. Giving away something that valuable, even though you didn't know it at that time will pay dividends in the future.
Look at The Stooges. Considered failures in the 70's, they are now considered punk icons. They're playing at the House of Blues tomorrow here in Boston with a ticket price of $65.
I predict great things for Boris The Sprinkler. It's the Immutable Law of Karma.
Oh and Journey still sucks.
This ain't your momma's punk rock...
Oh wait...it is :)
Resting?
Is it pining for the chords?
Speaking of good theme songs...
I'm pretty fond of ours (Silicon Valley Roller Girls) by the Whiskey Avengers. A little rockabilly, a little punk, a little pep rally:

Yahoo
I agreed Retox, SVRG has the best theme song and I was at most of those games in the video in 2009 too.
When I was a kid
7-8yrs ago at the re-start of roller derby, we played loud music & catered to a wild crowd of punks. The audience was 400-500 tops Now, we cater to thousands, play Britney & have junior leagues. My ladies of Providence Roller Derby were voted the "best role model for young ladies". This is a new direction that is not going to change. In the words of Bob Dylan. " You'd better learn how to swim or get soaked to the bone cause the times they are a changin'"
((i'm not waving, i'm
((i'm not waving, i'm drowning))
I think the only Dylan
I think the only Dylan lyrical quote this site will ever really need is "I NEED A DUMPTRUCK BABY TO UNLOAD MY HEAD!!!"
-- B. Dylan, "From a Buick 6," 1965
Rule 0
I don't know where you guys are from, but where I hang Rule 0 is don't fuck with cats.
ughhhhhhh, I LOVE GODJILLA &
ughhhhhhh, I LOVE GODJILLA & DCRD!
& SO does VCRD (BG, KY)!
Gotta tell ya Claranoia, it's like a fevah here. We bouted with SO Ill not long ago and were fortunate to have Godjilla and Bittercup in attendance. I mentioned this to a SO Ill skater that they'd come in to see the bout and the SOIll skater confessed her derby crush. Just unavoidable isn't it?
