Weekly Rollup and Open Thread, 8/6/2010

Video-heavy linkfest this week:

If you missed it earlier, yours truly and Hurt Reynolds were guests on last week's Derby Deeds podcast from Rollercon. Hurt gets all opinionated about slow play & backwards play, we talk about the Charm City / Denver bout from a couple of weeks ago, and we all attempt to create a roller derby dream team on the spot. Good times.

Sometimes, roller derby is not about skating. Sometimes, it is about cupcakes.

Featured on WFTDA.com this month: ridiculously nimble Gotham jammer Bonnie Thunders, and South Central Regional hosts No Coast Derby Girls.

San Diego releases a batch of pretty slick coaching videos featuring Isabelle Ringer and Bonnie D. Stroir: Obstructive Blocking, Destructive Blocking, Evasive Transitions and Juking 101. Good stuff here.

Fan at Atlanta's recent bout with Providence breaks the douchebag rule, and gets heavily penalized by ARG head of security Gargoyle Loftis. Hat tip: Blackie Braless.

Another candidate for Weirdest Sentence in a Roller Derby Article: "Based on the roller girls I spoke to, flat track is sort of like Kate Gosselin or Kevin Federline or the Eiffel Tower…"

Juliette Lewis is apparently still down with roller derby.

Not specific to roller derby, but this article takes a surprisingly large amount of words to arrive at the conclusion that referees are imperfect.

And finally … as long as Sammy Sarzoza keeps putting together these amazingly high-quality highlight reels, we're gonna keep posting them. Here's Windy City vs. Philly from June's ECE.

The San Diego videos are excellent.

Thx for the links; they really underscored the visible tactics of the sport. I especially liked the evasive blocking segment--a move that occurs so seamlessly that a fan might not realize the amount of practice that goes into it--much like stunting in football. Again, thx:-)
