YONKERS, NY -- Three weeks after Harm City defeated Connecticut 216-78 in their first meeting of 2010 in Maryland, Harm City and Connecticut went at it again up in Yonkers, NY. Once again, Harm City was able to build a large first-half lead on the backs of powerjams, but this time Connecticut played a much more effective second half, leaving the final score a more respectable 141-71.
See the box score for this bout here.
In the first four jams of the night, Harm City found themselves with a lot of trouble getting on the board, but were able to keep Connecticut from putting up any big jams. The opening sequence went 4-0, 0-0, 2-0 and 1-1, leaving Connecticut up 7-1 early.
However, once Connecticut jammers started going to the box, Harm City was able to solidly lock down with powerjam traps that brought the pack to a near-standstill. Justice Feelgood Marshall scored a 15-0 over a penalized Zakk Sabbath, but Connecticut's Cirkle Jerk got the lead back for the Death Quads with a 12-0 powerjam of his own.
At that point it was 19-16 Connecticut, but the following 20-0 powerjam from Harm City's Virginia Slim gave the Homicide a 36-19 lead they would not relinquish. On a slippery surface, quite a few jams ended at 0-0 (six out of the first half's 21), but on the scoring jams, Homicide usually went big.
Jam 10 saw Homicide's Carnage Asada drop a 15-0 unopposed jam to push the score to 51-23. Late in the half, Connecticut was just a few big jams out of it at 60-25, but it was Homicide getting a huge run -- 4-0 to Justice, 15-0 to Slim and 15-0 to Justice -- that had them up by a comfortable 94-28 at the break.
The second half saw Connecticut put together an impressive first 12 minutes, completely blanking Homicide for the first 8 jams of the half while doubling their own score. It was 94-56 before Harm City got their first points of the half with a 9-4 to Abe Froman over Pastor of Muppets, but from there it was Homicide's turn to start blanking the Death Quads, and CTDQ couldn't get closer than 38 points. Connecticut only scored on 3 of the remaining 12 jams of the half, and Homicide finished with a 70 point victory.
Harm City's victory leaves them 2-2 on the six-game Men's Derby Coalition season and still alive for a potential berth in the October 17 MDC Championship bout; Connecticut was mathematically consigned to the third-place bout with this loss. Homicide faces 2-1 Pioneer Valley at home this Saturday, August 14 in a do-or-die game -- a win will keep them alive for the championship with one game left in the season, while a loss would almost certainly eliminate them from championship contention.

Even almost three hours worth of traffic jams can't stop a good bout from going on. CTDQ, you guys rock! Always one of my favorite teams to play. We're glad we finally got the chance to come up and play on your home turf!
