Weekly Rollup and Open Thread, 7/23/2010
With the impending release of the WFTDA second-quarter rankings that'll determine which teams are invited to the regional tournaments, the tournament sites are starting to pop up: check out Thunda on the Tundra (North Central regionals in Green Bay, WI) and Derby In the Burbs (Eastern regionals in White Plains, NY).
More totally sweet video production work from the Gotham Girls home season -- most recent episode is Queens of Pain vs. Brooklyn Bombshells.
The DC Rollergirls are featured in this Washington Convention and Sports Authority ad just like roller derby was like an actual sport or something!
You know, I'm from Baltimore, and I have to say this was not my experience.
Upcoming WFTDA referee training clinics. By the way, that's Tootie Tinwhistle's soft sell. You don't want to see his hard sell.
Men's derby continues international growth as Australia's Brisbane City Rollers opens up to male players.
Oh, and speaking of taking over the world…
Finally, here's another high-quality and well-edited Sammy Sarzoza highlight reel from one of ECE 2010's better games, North Star's 99-70 win over Carolina -- I'm particularly a fan of the unconventional music choice. (Also, see here for a highlight reel of Rose City's 83-67 win over Boston.)

I hope that Gotham got permission from Hammer City to use the intro to Derbyin their video. I didn't see any reference to the authors in there.
Otherwise, what a sweet video!
Thanks for the concern Izzy!

Gotham did contact Furious P about using his vid for this production, all is cool. I am just so happy to see it being used so wide spread throughout our derby community!! xoxo Perky Set Hammer City Roller Girls

Awesome! It was definitely a great addition. :)
yup
yes indeed on the intro - there is a shout-out in the credits at 1:27:55.
Thanks for watching -- getting all the pieces together - audio, video, replays (!!), announcers, analysis, stats, graphics - continues to be a massive challenge and I daresay it's actually starting to look and feel like a living, breathing sportscast.
Sammy Sarzoza for President!
He delivers.
A Ref is Born
So I've recently started learning the ropes on my way to becoming a ref. Any advice anyone can give? Despite an ice skating background, it's all I can do to stay upright when I strap on skates. Any good resources out there for this?
Are you affiliated to a
Are you affiliated to a league yet? The absolute A1 best way to learn how to skate is to be taught by people who know what they're doing in an environment wherein you're learning alongside a lot of other people. If you aren't skating with a league, I'd say drop everything and join up with your local team ASAP.
If you're in need of web-based tutorials, I recommend the Expert Village videos on youtube for a breakdown for beginners of some basic derby-specific skating skills (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=%22how+to+play+roller+derby%...) which are just as useful for refs as they are players. There should be a ton of other skating how-to videos all over youtube as well, if you need things even more basic than that.
Otherwise, just keep practicing! The "barely able to stand up" stage passes relatively quickly, and then you can really start to get to grips with the fun stuff!
