#22 Bay Area 151, #14 San Diego 148 -- The final of the unofficial California State Tournament saw the 2009 champs San Diego going up against a Bay Area team that hadn't appeared at last year's edition. Though this one was a lot closer than the last San Diego / Bay Area meeting in August 2009 (where Bay Area won 140-67), it was again the San Francisco girls on top, this time in a last-jam nailbiter that featured no fewer than 8 lead changes, 6 of them in the second half.

Neither team had had much trouble with their previous opponents in the tournament. In the shortened qualifying matches, SDDD defeated Silicon Valley 43-31, Santa Cruz 62-12 and Bakersfield 117-1, and defeated Humboldt 199-63 in a full-length semifinal. Meanwhile, BAD won 84-12 over Angel City, 82-16 over Central Coast, and 126-7 over Humboldt in qualifiers before routing Silicon Valley 259-40 in the semifinal.

When the tourney faves met in the final, it was back-and-forth from the start. A 11-0 San Diego lead to start the game got erased with a quickness as BAD's Astronaughty put up a 24-0 powerjam on jam 4. Soon after the score had moved to 37-27, at which point San Diego caught a particularly unexpected bad break when Trish the Dish was expelled from the bout on a gross misconduct tackling major. That left San Diego without one of their key players for about three-fourths of the bout.

For the remainder of the half San Diego crept right up to Bay Area on the board but Bay Area kept jumping away just in time. A 56-31 BAD lead narrowed to 56-49 after a Steely Jan 15-0, and San Diego got to within just 4 points at 67-63 with about five minutes to play in the half, but Bay Area pulled out ahead again to a 81-67 lead soon afterwards. On the last jam of the half, though, San Diego finally got the huge jam they were looking for, a Bonnie D. Strior 17-0 that put SDDD in the lead at the break 84-81.

The lead changes were nowhere near done -- on the second jam of the second half, Bay Area was right back to take the lead back with a 19-0 for BurlyBot, making it 100-85 Bay Area, but two jams later a 14-0 followed by 5-0 had SDDD ahead 104-100. Two jams after that, Bay Area managed to escape a dangerous situation by killing a powerjam at 0-0 and then pulling a 7-0 for Jane Hammer over Kiki Diazz to take back the lead 107-104 with about 15 minutes left to play.

With the score 111-104, a chaotic, penalty-filled BAD powerjam saw both boxes fill up nearly entirely, leaving hardly anybody for BAD jammer Burlybot to avoid on her way to a 23-0 jam that gave BAD their largest lead of the game at 134-104.

But that wasn't safe either. Three jams later, San Diego's Kiki Diazz tied the game at 134-134 with a 15-0 featuring a slick apex jump, and two more lead changes later, San Diego was clinging to a 9 point lead at 148-139 with just 1:52 left to play. BAD's Burlybot was able to shave three points off that lead and call with enough time for one more jam, putting the score at 148-142 with 41 seconds to play.

Fittingly enough, the game ended on a lead change. San Diego lost their jammer Kiki Diazz to the box on a track cut, and Astronaughty picked up the two laps Bay Area needed for a 9-0 and a heart-stopping 151-148 victory. -- Justice Feelgood Marshall

Chicago Outfit 172, Ohio 34 -- Saturday June 5th fans crowded the Windy City Fieldhouse to watch over two hours of derby, as the Chicago Outfit Shade Brigade took on the Ohio Roller Girls Gang Green, the Chicago Outfit Syndicate played the Ohio Roller Girls All-Stars, and during the halves the Chicago Riots junior league played their first bout against the Skee Town Mini Skirtz. Following losses for the Shade Brigade and the Riots the Syndicate went on to take a decisive win against the Ohio Roller Girls All-Stars.

After the first jam the teams were tied with one point each, but that's as close as the score got the entire bout. By the 15-minute mark the Outfit was up 40 points to Ohio's 7. At half-time the score stood at 67 for the Outfit and 19 for Ohio. There was still a chance for Ohio to come back in the second half, but it would be a challenge as the Outfit tends to score more in the second half than in the first. This bout was not an exception, as the Outfit managed to put the score at 102-29 with 15 minutes left. In the 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th jams of the half the Outfit managed to rack up 63 more points while the Ohio jammers sat in the box or got trapped by the Outfit's strong defense. In the end, the Outfit had 172 points over Ohio's 34.

The Outfit's jammers Lola Blow, Queefer Sutherland, and Sweet Mary Pain individually scored well over Ohio's total points, and managed to take lead jammer status in 23 out of 35 jams. Sweet Mary Pain only allowed one point to be scored by Ohio while she was a jammer, and only lost the lead twice in the entire bout. It wasn't just the jammers that won them the game. Pivots Smashley "The Spaniard" Destructo and Helsa Wayton kept the front of the pack well guarded while Maul E. Hatchet, Gaygan, and Suzie Crotchrot kept the jammers occupied in the back of the pack.

Despite the score, Ohio put up a strong defense thanks to blockers Bratislava Bruiser, Phoenix Bunz, Pippi Ripyourstockings, Amy Spears, and Hell Camino. Jammers Drrty Grrl and Kitty Liquorbottom were able to break through the Outfit's defense with impressive footwork and score 12 points each.

The Chicago Outfit Syndicate's 2010 record now stands at 4-3, and their next bout is against Naptown on August 14th in Chicago. The Ohio Rollers Girls are now 1-4 for the 2010 season, and will be bouting against the Rollergirls of Southern Indiana on June 12th in Evansville. -- Jessica Barselow

DCRD Dynamite Dolls 134, ARRG St Lunachix 78 -- Demolition City visited the All-American Sports Mall in St. Louis Saturday to give the Arch Rival’s St. Lunachix an opportunity to avenge their February loss to the Dynamite Dolls, but the Chix couldn’t get it done. DCRD opened with a 5-0 jam by Godjilla and never gave up the lead. Five jams later, the Dolls began a 36-1 tear that gave them a 51-10 lead with six minutes remaining in the half. Mighty, Mighty Boston followed with an 11-4 jam to close the lead slightly, but Shelby N Pain reopened it with a 14-0 jam to move the score to 69-21. To close out the half, the Dolls took the lead jammer status in seven straight jams and nine of the final eleven. Hard take-outs of Chix jammer, Mighty, Mighty Boston, by DCRD’s Megan M Hurt and Steel Stitches, left the remaining  two without a lead jammer.

Three jams into the second half, Chix jammer, Joanie Rollmoan, put together a 15-0 jam when the Dolls’ Lillith of the Valley started out in the box. The surge shortened the Dolls’ lead, but two jams later, the elusive Godjilla answered with her own 15-0 jam. Over the last quarter of the bout, 9-point jams by Hazardous Dooks and Lillith of the Valley coupled with a 15-4 jam by Shelby N Pain gave the Dolls their largest lead at 134-64. The Siege closed the night with a 14-0 jam for the Chix making the final score 134-78. The Dolls remain undefeated at 6-0 while the Chix fall to 2-2.

Leading scorer for the Dynamite Dolls was Godjilla with 48 points, followed by MVP Shelby N Pain and Lillith of the Valley with 41 and 36 points respectively. The St Lunachix were led by MVP The Siege with 30 points, followed closely by Joanie Rollman with 26. -- Barry Heathcotte

"tackling" - no.

Actually, it was a legal hit that was just late (right at 20 feet) and continued out of bounds. Both skaters tripped and ended up on the floor, but Trish did not tackle anyone. My feeling is that she was ejected because the refs needed to make a point in a very very physical match between two tough teams - and because both teams had asked the head ref to call the game as hard as possible because earlier bouts had reffing that I would definitely call loose. I think its super important to make that distinction because 1. trish didn't throw a fit - she just left, and that might make someone think that means that SDDD agreed with the call. I was the "A" and I completely 100% did not agree with the call. However, I knew they wouldn't take it back - so there wasn't much we could do. And B. People want to think hard hitters are also the kind of assholes that would tackle, and that's just not true of Trish. She plays a very clean game and rarely sits in the box. In the last couple years I've been ejected twice but she hasn't at all.

That said, what an amazing bout. BADG is storming back into the rankings and in spite of the end results, I'm insanely proud of my team and how great they played. Congratulations to both team and congrats to BADG for taking home the trophy. We're ready to earn it back next year!!!!

Rule version

Was this game being played under the new May 2010 ruleset? If so, this might be the first example of the new expulsion language actually getting somebody expelled:

The following egregious acts will be automatic game expulsion, and can be punished as a multi- game suspension (see Section 7.5.2.2). Expulsions will be issued for a conscious, forceful attempt to block an out-of-bounds opponent in an egregious manner while executing an illegal block.

6.8.22 Intentional, negligent, or reckless contact with an out-of-bounds opponent while executing a block in an illegal manner.

nope, old ruleset

And for what it's worth, I wouldn't have ejected Trish from that bout. From the announcer's table about 5 feet away, it looked like Trish was going in for a hit, but both she and Hammer lost control and they happened to collide out of bounds and into a precariously close wall. It certainly didn't look like Trish tried to "tackle" her, but we all know refs don't call intent (and I'm not a ref).

Wrong on a couple of counts.

She wasn't ejected (ejections happen based on penalty minute counts, not on single penalties). She was expelled. Under the new rules, the whole word "ejection" gets tossed out (and good riddance, it was confusing).

Referees DO call intent in certain circumstances, particularly with regard to low blocks (AKA "Tripping" under past rule sets). A low block that is deemed to have been delivered intentionally merits an expulsion under rule 6.3.11. Intentional low blocks are more easy to spot intent on, particularly if it's a foot-first sliding trip.

Ref Cam ARRG v DCRD

Please enjoy this awesome ref cam footage of the Arch Rival All Star vs Duke City / Arch Rival St Lunachix vs Demolition City bout. Both these bouts were exciting to watch and ARRG are fun and classy hosts....I love those girls! I would also like to put in my vote for Ana Warpath as winner of the after party despite the fact that she didn't even play in either of these bouts :)
