[Montreal Roller Derby] Les Contrabanditas 104, Les Filles Du Roi 103
-- The reigning Montreal intra-league champions Les Filles Du Roi took on Les Contrabanditas Saturday June 19th at Arena St Louis. Les Filles have been on a tear as of late, and after going undefeated in last season they came into the bout confident and expecting to win, while the Contrabanditas had a season of rebuilding in 2009 and were anxious to make their mark. It was Montreal’s first under the new WFTDA rule set, as well, which ended up being a significant factor in terms of the new, stricter fouling-out rules.

The game began with two quick lead changes in the first three jams, with the ‘Ditas scoring first blood 4-0 in the first jam and Les Filles picking up 8 in the third to go ahead 8-4. The ‘Ditas would reclaim the lead, and battle for it for most of the first half, cycling through jammers Mange Moi El Cul, Ewan Wotarmy, Cheese Grater and Georgia W Tush. Les Filles du Roi had Beats Per Minute, Smack Daddy, Romeo and Lil Mama, but were without the services of rookie That’s What She Said (unavailable) and co-captain Beater Pan-Tease (injury). Les Filles also lost the services of blocker Ana Thema for the second half of the bout as a sprained ankle in the first half forced her out of the game.

Les Filles ran into penalty trouble and were forced to skate short-handed early and often, while the Ditas played a comparatively clean game. Midway through the 2nd period, Smack Daddy picked up her seventh penalty and fouled out, leaving Les Filles further short handed. Trips to the box were 23-12 by the end of the bout, Les Filles almost doubling up on the ‘Ditas.

The last jam of the bout began with the score 99-98 in favor of the Contrabanditas, but jammer Mange Moi El Cul was penalized, costing her the lead jammer status and giving Les Filles’ Lil Mama a power jam. Les Filles capitalized, scoring a grand slam, but Lil Mama then was sent to the box for a foul, bouncing Mange Moi back into the fray. With seven seconds left in the jam, she burst through the strong Filles pack, led by Jess Bandit and Lady J, to score 5, and lead the Contrabanditas to a 104-103 victory, their first home league win since mid-2008.

Bout MVPs were Jess Bandit (FDR) and Hustle Rose (‘Ditas). The Contrabanditas next face La Racaille July 3rd. - Single-Malt Scott
