Preview: #8 Texas @ #2 Oly & #6 Rat City

OLYMPIA, WA / SEATTLE, WA -- This weekend sees the potential for a few different kinds of derby history being made as the originators of the modern flat-track game, Texas, head into the Pacific Northwest as the latest to take on on a multi-game challenge against tough area teams. Texas will take on Oly on Saturday night and then go up against Rat City on Sunday afternoon.

178-100 Oly @ 2009 WFTDA Nationals

#8 Texas @ #6 Rat City (4-2)
Previous meetings

105-93 Rat City @ 2007 WFTDA Western Regionals
74-69 Texas @ 2006 Bumberbout

When Texas clashes with Oly on Saturday night, it'll be memorable for at least two reasons. Not only is it a rematch of the 2009 WFTDA championship bout, where Oly took the crown by putting Texas down by a final of 178-100, it's also an opportunity for Oly to tie one of the young sports' major records. They're 17-0 in WFTDA sanctioned action since their first organization bout in January 2009, and a win here would tie the 18-wins-in-a-row record set by Gotham from 2007 to 2009.

Texas is likely in no mood to hand it to them, though. In addition to revenge for being denied the title in 2009, they're looking to bounce back after recently suffering the largest defeat of their six-year interleague history when they went down 163-64 to Rocky Mountain last month. Though they're still officially #1 in their South Central region, that loss dropped them to #8 in DNN's unofficial national Power Rankings, while Oly officially holds #1 in the West via WFTDA and #2 nationally via DNN.

Major factors Desi Cration, Bullet Tooth Tracy and Vicious Van Go-Go have all left Texas since the 2009 campaign, though they have picked up a very effective young transfer from Tucson in Luce Bandit. On the opposing bench, Oly has recently added a vet from Minnesota in Harmony Killerbruise, who is being worked into an already very strong Oly jammer rotation that includes the 2009 DNN reader's choice Jammer of the Year in Atomatrix, alongside Tannibal Lector, Femme Fatale and Heffer.

Sunday afternoon's clash between Rat City and Texas is notable for being the fifth installment in one of derby's classic rivalries. Narrowly matched and occasionally controversial meetings late in the 2006 Bumberbout, 2007 Western Regionals and Nationals, and 2008 Western Regionals all ended in bouts decided by no more than 12 points. Though much of the personnel has changed over the years, there's still a unique sports feud here, and the teams remain closely ranked on DNN's new unofficial Top 25, with Rat City at #6 and Texas at #8.

WHO DO YOU SKATE FOR???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So many crazy good games between these teams!!!!! That TXRG/Rat semi @ nationals here in Austin 07 was insane and one of the greatest games I have ever seen! (yes DNN history at a glance kicks ass thanks for the reminder of the loss! ha! but was still a killer game) These ladies love to play each other, the sport at its best and highest level. A lot of love between the Rat/Oly women and the Texas Rollergirls (can not remember the name of the doc. about the Rat city team but seeing D-bomb giving her interview sitting with the family and wearing her Texas Rollergirls t-shirt made me all fuzzy feeling inside) This weekend = Hard fought, hard hitting, intense derby with a wealth of knowledge and experience on the track at all times. Newer skaters take notes cause these games will be good(understatement of the year) TEXAS TEXAS KILL KILL KILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Blood on the Flat Track: The Rise of the Rat City Roller Girls

is probably the doc you're talking about. Buy it, rent it, you can even stream it via netflix. Great movie about a great team. I don't know if you came up to Oly last year with the Hotrod Honeys, but that was a great bout, with a lot of joking and laughing back and forth between two great teams. Best part for me was when Oly's announcers led the crowd with the Texas Texas Kill Kill Kill cheer (Oly fans know a thing or two about call and response cheers).

bumberbout

The Rat City doc contained the footage from the bumberbout bout w/ TX not the 2007 nationals. But yeah, the 2007 nationals bout between the two was very intense on many levels.

@cynicalguy true and true. I

@cynicalguy true and true. I was there working security it was crazy intense! And just by crazy coincidence I happen to be wearing the T-shirt right now!!!! Damn I need to get some new cloths!

Dear Oly

Pleaz to put your far away from me gamez on the interwebs... Thank you.

Seatlle loves Sunday Bouts!

Don't they? Especially when Oly plays them the night before...and maybe Portland plays them the night before that (Rocky). Struh-T-Ger E. Respect.

If you look at the history

All the teams that have come up to take the 2 or 3 game sweep have all played better in each consecutive game.

Madison played better vs Oly; Charm played better vs Oly and again vs Rat; and Rocky did the same.

If I were a team, I'd rather face the traveling visitors first, not last.
