DNN Releases June 2010 Power Rankings

May marked another pretty solid month for the DNN Power Rankings. In 27 bouts involving at least one Power Ranked team, the higher-ranked team won 25 times, giving us a 92% percent accuracy for the month. We have the city of Denver to blame for keeping us from another 100% month -- both our May misses came when May's #3 ranked Texas lost on consecutive days to #4 Denver and previous #5 Rocky Mountain. For those playing along at home, we're now at 62 hits and 6 misses since starting the 2010 rankings in March, for a 91% accuracy rating overall.

Accordingly, there haven't been too many major corrections for the June release. While Gotham keeps their previous (and, ok, somewhat controversial) slot at the top, new #3 Rocky Mountain's 99-point spanking of Texas just before losing to #2 Oly gave us some pause. For the moment, though, we're sticking with our impression from April, which was that Gotham's 201-75 steamrolling of Charm City a week before Oly beat Charm by a much more respectable final of 156-102 suggests that Gotham has the edge right now.

In the rest of the top ten, previous #5 Rocky Mountain leapfrogs #4 Denver and moves to #3 on the strength of the previously mentioned Texas weekend -- RMRG won by a memorable 99 while Texas kept it much closer against Denver, losing 130-112. Texas drops down to #8, their lowest slot ever, allowing the midrange of Rose City, Rat City and Philly to all pick up one slot each. Finally, previous #11 Madison moves up one slot to squeak into the top ten on the strength of a impressive showing against Windy City.

The teens see only one minor change, as previous #16 Steel City goes up one to #15 with the help of a very strong showing against #12 Detroit at early May's Spring Roll tournament; that displaces London to #16.

There's another flip at 21 and 22, as Bay Area gets back over Duke City; Sacred City provided some useful triangulation here as BAD took down Sacred 161-40 in May while Duke City scored a 126-55 win against Sacred back in February (and also got smoked by Denver this month, 262-48.)

Finally, Montreal ticks up one to #24 while Brewcity returns to the top 25 with a good showing at the recent MIdwest Brewhaha. Previous #24 North Star is the only team to drop off this month, having taken two big losses to Windy City and Cincinnati.

On The Bubble

This month, there are considerably more teams than usual that seem like they could be debuting (or re-appearing) in the top 25 before too long:

Jet City. JCRG seems very much an up-and-coming team, which was underlined by their 162-108 defeat of unranked but tough Arch Rival at the Midwest Brewhaha. Their only bout against a top-25 team so far, though, was a narrow, late loss to Duke City at February's Wild West Showdown; we're eagerly awaiting the results of their next one, as on paper they look like a team that could be competitive among the 6-10 slots of this year's Western Regional -- if they can break into that top 10.

Chicago Outfit. Played aforementioned North Star to an 11-point Outfit loss, and acquitted themselves decently against tough #19 Cincinnati this month (141-86) along with a solid win against Tampa (135-92) and a rout of Philly's B-team, 159-52. Currently a WFTDA apprentice league, they're looking like a team that will be seriously competitive in the midrange of the North Central region when they enter the organization fully.

North Star. Barely fell off the rankings this month, but that's more a reflection of an increasingly competitive turmoil right below the #25 spot than a serious stumble on their part. They get Nashville and Carolina at late June's ECE, giving them a chance to shine.

Omaha. Proved their 11 point loss to Kansas City wasn't a fluke by solidly handling Grand Raggidy and Ohio at the Brewhaha -- though they don't have any bouts against top-25 opponents coming up anytime soon.

Naptown. At Spring Roll, the Indianapolis team surprisingly stuck right with #12 Detroit for a full first half before Detroit took it over in the second. If they can repeat that performance for a full game against a similarly ranked team, they would very quickly become a force to be reckoned with.

No Coast. No Coast sits on the outer edge here, tagging along on the strength of a narrow March defeat of the Outfit -- but they'll need a very strong showing in upcoming bouts against Omaha and Pikes Peak if they hope to push their way closer to the top 25.

Got something to say? Sure you do. As always, frank, vigorous and courteous debate is welcomed over in the full Power Rankings thread.
