CONTEST: Best Watch Party Photo/Video

  • Must. Keep. Watching. (Entry: PaRappa)

Submissions for this contest are now closed.

UPDATE: Vote now in the Watch Party Tournament!

Starting Friday, we're kicking off the first DNN Watch Party Weekend! Gather 'round the 21st-century hearth with an unprecedented menu of live roller derby bouts and events, including but not limited to the 2010 East Coast Derby Extravaganza and Battle on the Bank III.

We know how much fun you have at watch parties, and we want you to share it with the world! To motivate you, we've collaborated with several sponsors to put together an unprecedented prize package for the winning submission! We want to see the best, funniest, awesomest, derby-est photo or video you can send us from your DNN watch party this weekend.

Q. What should we do in our photo or video?

A. It's really up to you! Costumes? Sure! Skits? Absolutely! Elaborate in-jokes? Excellent. Gratuitous use of DNN branding? Not necessary, but certainly welcome! Gratuitous pandering to DNN sponsors? Now we're talking. You're derby people, which means you're clever, creative, and funny. Show us what you've got!

Contest Prize Package

The winning submission will earn you:

Total retail value of this prize package: Over $2000!

Q. How do we send our entry?

A. Send your submission to watchparty@derbynewsnetwork.com

Q. How will the winner be selected?

A. DNN will determine the winner at our sole discretion. That said, we're definitely going to show off the entries throughout the weekend and beyond, and we'll pay attention to the voices of our audience! UPDATE: We've decided to hold a tournament!

Q. When does the contest end?

A. Contest runs this weekend only! Submissions must be received no later than Monday, 6pm Eastern Time.

Q. Any fine print?

A. We reserve the right to use submissions for future promotional or marketing efforts (basically, we're aiming to demonstrate that you're an engaged audience!). And, of course, to embarrass the guilty parties randomly :)

A winner is me

I will have the best watch party because:

1. It's the weekend after my birthday
2. Drinking games will be in full effect (at least for me)
3. About 4000 people will be showing up
4. I will be watching games in Real-enough™ Def
5. Because I will be in San Diego watching BotB III live and in-person

Please send all the gear to me, gift wrapped would be great, thanks~~~

Can a viewing party be at ECE

That counts right! I like Windy Mans idea!

feature photo...

I nearly did a spit take when I saw the picture you guys decided to use. Just for some background we were watching nationals and knitting... which is why half of us aren't looking at the tv.
Atlanta's so excited to be competing for viewers with BOTBIII and ECE among others this weekend and we really hope that it helps boost the donations in the past week of the DNN Funding-2010 campaign!

Bad Decisions,

I KNOW you can win this!!!!

...and I hope you're watching TXRG v CCRG.

Brilliant

This is a brilliant idea. Nice going. Now if we can just get a trophy for who wins the after party. I am sure WCR peeps would take it. :)

watch party trophy

That is a DAMN fine idea. Putting that on the list, with the other 750 or so damned fine ideas we're working our way toward.

More trophies mean...

more winners.

I was thinking of an after party trophy for the all the big tournaments we could pass along from year to year.

Something one could drink out of. As a matter of fact all of the trophies should be something we can drink out of . Especially the one named Hydra. :)

Maybe we should have a DNN brain trust for all the ideas you get. Sort of like Mensa but less sober.

mother cluckers!!

Now the photos of my hen Ninja watching the Gotham/Windy City bout with us will look contrived! Playing the DNN drinking game on day two meant I left my camera at my teammate's house, so no evidence yet. Curse you Nashville!

PS: how did they get bout footage from the future? Those ladies got skills.

God damn you Nashville

Stop being so awesome. Stop it right now.

Still pictures are considered a video? Are you kidding me, that was more like a boring non emotional slide show...

The contest is called

Best Watch Party Photo/Video. As for non emotional, only a person with freon for blood could not be thrilled by such a close, hard fought bock, I mean bout.

EDIT: now embedded

texas? texas?

cute video! a lot better than the bout you guys had....

(thanks for a great competition!)

-Bettie (CCRG)

Texas is the reason for the season

CCRG put up a great fight - looked like it was all over when they took the lead. Of course the only thing more amazeballs than Bloody Mary's final scoring run to win it for the Texecutioners was the refs "falling" for a flopper.

Going to break this to you gently Ozzy

final score was Charm City 154, Texas 146

Great Video

Glad I experienced the energy in Texas, one of my top derby trips. Thank you to the Texecutioners for making CCRG feel so welcome in your town, and taking great care of us.

@ozzy - the game ended by the jam clock, just so you know. Really a game that close could always go either way, but we play for 60 minutes.

great bout! great video!

that was the most fun I've had at a home bout - win or loose! The crowd was electric and its all because of the show that both teams put on. Obviously we can always Monday morning quaterback ... err powerjam?? uhhh lead jam?? Hurry someone get on a derby equivalent to this!

Anyway - it seemed as though the bout ended on the injury and if so then it was a little shocking to see the game end with an injury and then to see that same girl tearing up the dance floor at the after-party and playing around at the swimming hole the next day. Let's just say it was in poor form to "stay down" and left many Texans with a less than "CHARM"ing impression.

From watching the stream last

From watching the stream last night, and the replay again tonight, both times it appeared the jam ended on time. If it was called early, it couldn't have been more than 2-3 seconds. But speaking of less than charming (other than the seemingly meritless cheating accusations.), what was up with the bizarre announcer song/parody/chant thing going on the first time the emt's were called out for the Charm jammer?

Anyway, congrats to both teams for a very entertaining game.

...

ozzy_zion wrote:

I don't know, somehow I don't consider a skater dragging herself completely off the track and as far out of the way of gameplay as possible displaying poor form and "staying down." But, um, whatever you say.

I am sorry to hear that any Texans left with an unfavorable opinion of CCRG, because otherwise it was an amazing trip and the Texecutioners served as awesome hosts.

Addition to May rules

Just in case you, or anyone, didn't know.....the head referee of any given sanctioned game, now has the ability to call another jam at the end of the game if they believe it is warranted. Johnny Roastbeef, was the head referee for this game, and it looks as if he did not deem this situation warranting any such protocol. I am sure that if the jam didn't end on it's natural conclusion, or there was any sort of controversy, a jam would have been put into action. Personally, I consider him one of the top officials in the country, as do many, and respect his decision making skills no matter which way they go.

Also, just to add, another big fat thank you to the TXRG and everyone for welcoming Charm into the womb of modern roller derby. It was an absolutely awesome time. And anytime we hear those two words....Texas Texas, you better believe we will be shouting with everyone else, KILL KILL KILL!

Just to be clear

The Prosecutor, we all know her, was the jam timer for the Charm/Texas game, reported in another forum, "The final jam was not called due to injury. It was called because 2 minutes had expired on the jam clock and there was no time left on the period clock. The jam had come to its natural conclusion and thus the game."

Ozzie, with all due respect,

have you ever sustained a knee injury?

Lone Star on an empty stomach after sweating your balls off can be a pretty powerful anesthetic.

Would like to sincerely reiterate my leaguemates' thanks to Texas. Wonderful game, wonderful hosts, and Ozzie, thanks for making sure we made it back to the hotel in once piece.

missed the game :(

I think it's pretty clear who deserves to win this contest....Santa Cruz!!!
And, no, I'm totally NOT biased either. lol

SCDG Wins by a MILE!!

And no, I'm not biased either.
I mean come on!! We have over 1200 fans screaming for us once a month at the newly named "Santa Cruz Derby Girls Stadium" and we also had them chanting DNN!!! (they will pretty much do anything we tell them to) And this just after we received a Mayoral Proclamation of our First Annual Derby Girl Day in Santa Cruz!!

This town LOVES its Derby, and its DNN!!

This league is committed to derby and to the network and by the shameless acts seen in their latest video entry, they will obviously go to any length to top anyone elses entry!!

But where is the helmet cam???

We are having a boy... is it wrong that I am just a teensie little bit bummed about that? I should feel much shame, right? Creative beyond belief. Good work!

Chicken Derby!

They painted chickens for derby. Awesome!

i shouldn't even respond

but charm <3 texas, win or lose, we were ecstatic to be in the birthplace of modern roller derby. But them's the breaks, she got hurt and the time on the jam clock ran out at the exact same time, the crowd boo'd her for getting injured. I'm sorry that she didn't play to your ultra observant senses. And to be honest the announcing was less than nice.

**this is a response to ozzy zion**

See for yourself

For anyone wondering what's being discussed, I posted links to the video in the boutcast.

From here we can see that the final jam begins at 47:40 and ends at 49:40. Now, if it had been the case that the jam was called off early due to injury, and the head ref deemed the skater to be "flopping" to end the jam, they could have added an extra jam as per 9.2.6.3.

It's also worth pointing out...

It's also worth pointing out that she removed herself from play, so it could hardly be considered "flopping." That and the fact that she scored six points of her own before hurting her knee, meaning Bloody Mary (who played an absolutely incredible game) would have had to score 26 points that jam to win the game - doable, absolutely, but a pretty tall order as CCRG was back up to full strength in the pack by then.

Seriously, though, amazing game! Playing Texas in Texas can be intimidating, but they were awesome hosts. And I am super proud of CCRG, who played tight and tough from jam one against one of the top teams in the nation.

other things worth pointing out

look kids I didn't mean to cause the inevitable $%!T storm that has since developed.

As my post says "IT SEEMED" to be this way. For so many people perception is reality and I was simply relaying what some people in Texas had perceived had told me. I was too busy watching Bloody and trying to count how many points she and the CCRG jammer were scoring to pay attention to things like the clock. I haven't gone back and watched the replay yet.

I do know how much of an anesthetic LONE STAR can be regardless of how much you've eaten in a day.

Someone else on this thread from CCRG wrote inflammatory comments implying that the bout wasn't all that great just because TXRG lost. Well I can testify that the bout was amazeballs. I hate to see my girls loose but damnit I love me some well fought action versus the alternative, a derby blow out = yawn, win or loose.

Finally, one last thing that I'd also like to point out was that the crowd started booing at the end and it was I who lashed out saying, "no, no no. This is not how we act in Texas. We do not do this, we are hospitable hosts..." or something to that effect. I strongly believe this to be true and wanted everyone to know that this aggression will not stand.

I love watching CCRG skate since the first bout I saw y'all in at ECE last year against RAT. I remember there was some controversy in that one too (besides the blackout) which is probably why I love y'all so damn much. Now, I'm going to load up the video of the game and go and possibly eat some crow.

Twas only a joke. Can you blame her for having such pride in her leaguemates?! ;) That was most definitely an amazing bout. We were all on the edge of our seats at the watch party.

Total love fest

is how I remember the bout and the whole trip, for the record. No worries. The blogoverse can't reflect that accurately enough.
ETA supposed to be a reply to Ozzie.

TXRG v. Charm!!!!!!!!!

People will bitch and moan after any sporting event if they feel their team was wronged etc. Be it Football, B-Ball, or World Cup! All I can say is...Charm that was a hell of a game! I'm happy you got to experience a really great TXRG crowd. Here in Austin, and I don't get it, but we have phenomenal crowds for home games and always sell out when the home teams are playing each other but when the travel team is playing we just don't draw that well. Maybe it's because we live in a town with soooo much going on all the time, but the crowd Sunday night was fantastic! Never have we had so many people screaming KILL KILL KILL!!!!!!! At the top of their lungs like that! I have even heard from TXRG skaters that say fans came up to them after the bout and said "You know I have been here before and seen derby and everything but never before have I felt so emotionally connected to the team!"
I almost cried happy tears when I heard that :..^.)....
I've been to every home Texecutioners game since the team was founded and this past Sunday was just one of the best ever, win or lose!(of course as I always love to say "Winning, sure beats losing!!!!")
Deep in the heart of Derby we are always winners!
Originators, Creators, Mothers of the Sport
TEXAS TEXAS KILL KILL KILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Derby Love to all, and Charm I hope to see Y'all again at Nationals!

that's so crazy considering

that's so crazy considering what a bad ass travel team TXRG is and has been, since the beginning.

Texas fans

were so into that bout and inspirational to play for. Everything about our trip to Austin was a lesson in why we adore roller derby. Not the least of which is the joy of great competition and thrill of bringing an audience to it's screaming, rocking, hopeful feet for a last jam like that one.

Come back, Charm

We're a little depressed with you gone.
Amazing team, amazing game, the way derby is supposed to be. Thanks for treating our fans right. :)
