#25 Brewcity vs #19 Cincinnati & Ohio

CINCINNATI, OH -- The Cincinnati Gardens has become one of the best roller derby venues in the country this season, with an average attendance of 3,000 fans. For the last home game of the season on Saturday, that crowd will witness a match between the Brewcity Bruisers of Milwaukee (DNN #25, WFTDA NC #5) and the hometown Black Sheep (DNN #19, WFTDA NC#4). This will be the first meeting between these teams, and it could be a preview of an early-round North Central tournament pairing later this year.

DNN will bring you both video and text coverage of this game, including an undercard between the Cincinnati Silent Lambs and the Demolition City Dynamite Dolls, starting at 7 PM Eastern.

Both teams are undefeated in WFTDA play for 2010; Cincinnati holds a 7-1 overall record (with a loss to San Diego and a win over the at-the-time WFTDA apprentice Chicago Outfit), while Brewcity has beaten all four of its opponents this year. In recent action, the Bruisers smashed Tampa Bay and Burning River (Cleveland) in May, and also dominated Arch Rival (St. Louis) by 102 points back in February (a team that Cincinnati beat by 66 points in April.) Both rosters have enjoyed considerable stability for the past two years, and that usually translates to excellent teamwork, communication, and execution of strategy.

Milwaukee’s weapons include speedy jammers Skittle and Carrie A. Hacksaw. Hacksaw in particular is a veteran player (formerly of Madison’s Dairyland Dolls) who is quite capable of putting up 20- point jams on packs that are caught off-guard. The Black Sheep will have to be very wary of the penalty box situation at all times, lest they end up getting cut like a rusty old pipe by the great Hacksaw. As for blockers, Milwaukee’s Servin’ Justice and Anna Krajcik are heavy hitters and smart players.

Many people expect Brewcity to pull a few upsets this year and possibly challenge for a spot in the National tournament, but they have yet to prove themselves against an opponent ranked higher than them this season. Their Saturday match against the Black Sheep will be their toughest test of the year so far. On the other hand, the Black Sheep have consistently played beyond expectations this season; close games have been predicted, and they failed to deliver, dominating most of their opponents handily. However, this game promises to be one of the closest matchups season. The Black Sheep offense appears to be good to go with the high-scoring K Lethal and Hannah Ouchocinco, but their defense is missing some key players and will have to step it up in this game to contain the strong Brewcity jammers.

Both teams can withstand a loss in this game and still be in strong contention for an invite to the WFTDA North Central regional tournament. Regardless of the outcome, it is very likely to be a preview of regional tournament action to happen later this year. This is really a battle for the higher seed. In fact, Brewcity is hosting the 2010 WFTDA North Central regional tournament, and if current rankings reflect future tournament seeds, Cincinnati may have to face Milwaukee in the early round of that tournament in front of a hostile crowd.

Brewcity will play the Ohio Roller Girls of Columbus on Sunday morning in the Gardens, in a game that will be closed to the public. Ohio is 2-4 for the season, with wins over Derby City and Hammer City and a pair of losses to Naptown, as well as losses to Nashville and Omaha. This is the first meeting between these two teams. DNN will provide a textcast of this game with coverage beginning at 10:45 AM EST.

ohio ---

don't forget their loss to the chicago outfit! 172 - 34

cincinnati has won their past few bouts by about 60 points each. that's pretty impressive, and i think it shows how close many teams in the north central region are (especially now that the outfit is part of that!)

Brew City

I was fortunate to be there for the Saturday game where CRG won another great game, and also to see Brew City play OHRG (Ohio roller girls) in a Sunday morning bout.

Brew City Jammer "Rejected Seoul" is AMAZING !!! She is a fast skater and she maneuvers really well through the pack. Other than my team winning the night before, she was the best thing rolling on concrete this weekend (in my eyes).

What was the score of the Ohio v. Brew City bout?

The top four teams in the North Central region seem permanently etched in granite. Madison and Detroit fight over the 2 and the 3 spots, but Windy City and Cincinnati are, like, tattooed at the 1 and the 4. Huh.

Ohio vs. Brew City

I heard through the grapevine that it was 117-55 in favor of BCB.
