Weekly Rollup and Open Thread, 5/21/2010

Very busy weekend for bouts has left us with not too much time to build the link queue, so just four this Friday:

If you're not on Facebook, it's possible you might not have already seen this short but sweet article by noted sports writer Frank DeFord on the modern derby revival -- published both by NPR and Sports Illustrated. The content isn't really anything we haven't seen before ... but it's Frank DeFord! And NPR! And SI!

We have no idea what led up to this situation in last week's Duke vs. Denver bout, but we're glad Elisa Baker caught it on camera.

The very best Ronnie James Dio tribute of the week, courtesy of LADD's Iron Maiven.

Finally, the Denver Roller Dolls prove that roller derby can do Heartwarming Human Interest Story with the best of 'em:

WARNING

Pregnant roller girls - do not watch this video unless you have a minute to cry some heavy happy tears.

Way to go Denver! <3

shed a tear

pregnant has nothing to do with it! you will cry unless you have no heart!

"she's in a wheelchair, so she's a rollergirl"

I am sitting in a Caribou coffee in Chicago crying my eyes out! Thank you so much for posting. Things like this make me so proud to be a derby girl.

Man, I am so proud to be involved in this sport.

Awesome, DRD.

From the scores page:

Magic City 249
Harm City 87

Score flipped? If not, who ARE these Magic City guys?

I'm guessing it's these guys:

Sweet N. Lowdown

(By the way, there seems to be a women's league in Montana that also goes by "Magic City.")

Thanks.

What I meant was... *how has a team with relatively little experience upset one of the most established male teams by such a large margin.*

And, maybe this is my answer:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=i07kHnd-Twc

Jamskaters.

Hope someone got video.

Sorry, I should have been

Sorry, I should have been more specific. The link I sent had an extensive bio, detailing their history and background as jamskaters.

Still really impressive though, even with a background in skating. Maybe they're the man-version of Oly. :)

Sweet N. Lowdown

i was there

and that's exactly what I was thinking when I left. They are, I believe, the man version of the Oly rollers. Relatively obscure on the derby scene but MAD skilled. They can dance and derby!

I was trying to go to this darn it!

I see some of the MCM 2-3 times a week when they come up for practice with the Jacksonville Roller Girls & yes, they are insane. Some of the stuff that they can pull off is just sick... and that is just when they are goofing off. When they get down to scrimmaging they are crazy good. I was hoping to go and take pictures of this game.Too bad they couldn't be the opening to the Charm City championship as was originally thought for since I would have been able to go to the game then. Needing to work really interferes with derby. I have been told there is video of this bout and I am waiting to see it. All I can say is the guys have tons of respect from me and all the JRG players. Hopefully their next game gets on DNN so everyone can see them play. Dallas, St Louis, New York? Who's next?

that

I'm sad it couldn't work out, because of insurance reasons and time constraints. If it did it would have only been a very brief expo and i would have missed it! the hour long bout was great. I have photos and video that I need to go through. But their people were definitely recording. And I want to give a huge shout out to homicide for staying in the game and never giving up. Slim was a jamming machine!

Oly vs Magic Co-ed derby showdown

Let's see it. Please?????

in a venue that supports live streaming??? :)

OLY and Puget Sound Outcast

We scrimmage when we can on Sunday morning at 8am. This Sunday we will do it again.

Magic is invited to come to the PNW and play the champs, PSOD. They have our contact info.

Even though the name Harm City Homicide stands as one of the most established teams out there, the team not so much. More than half of our skating roster joined the team within the past seven months making us a relatively young team. This isn't the same team we were skating with in 2009. Unfortunately that's the reality we face in mens derby where the popularity and pool of skaters isn't as high as womens derby.

But yes, Magic City is some serious stuff. Definitely changing the game for mens derby. And their jam skating background and years they have been together certainly helps them in that regard. If you get a chance to see them skate certainly do it. We learned a lesson or two.

Magic City

They bad. I is very, very sore.

Magic

Harm City Homicide played an amazing game. Magic City Misfits played a ludicrous game.

The premiere bout of the premiere season of men's roller derby was goddamned insane. If anyone got video of the whole thing, it ought to be donated to the Smithsonian immediately.

Old and confused by the Internet

I can figure out how to leave comments from my phone, or I can remember how to leave a comment as a reply to the previous one about the men's bout. But I can't do both at once.

MCM

They are a great bunch of skaters. They come up and practice with us a few times a week. They have even been in a bout with us. I can see what kind of video I can find. Yes they are amazing to watch. Every time they are up here I am like wow I have got to learn that....How do they do that (lol) They are amazing!

You guys are awesome!

We are all just very glad to have been able to enjoy the floor with a great group of guys (Harm City). The bout was super fun and we have mad respect for Harm City. We do have video of the bout from two angles. I believe it is being cut and rendered as we speak and should be available via our website in a short period of time for anyone that would like to see it. Thanks so much for the props!

*Quad Almighty* sorry about that soreness boss....my bad! it's all out of love though!

Co-Ed bout against the national champs? sounds like good times to me, someone make that happen!...i have one question though....if we have to travel way out there...who is buyin the beers? cause after a plane ticket imma need some financial help to survive. maybe someone can sponsor us to fly out there and do this...like some mercenaries. lol

McM

Hey guys this is Streak captain of the Magic City Misfits ,Just want to say thank you for all the kind word towards us, Here is a lil bit about us .

Our team it self is just over 1 year old,Our game against harm was our second bout in the teams history with our full roster of 11 skaters ,we are skaters and have been for our whole lives 5 of my guys myself included have 20+ years of skating a piece the rest well over 5 years,More then half of us are National champion Jamskaters, putting that on the back burner we have spent the past year absorbing the game of derby and all of its rules once we got that taken care of we were ready to see where we stood in the derby world.

Our first bout was 2 months prior to Harm City in which our 11 skaters took on the Race city Rebels of Indiana where MCM came out on top 177 to 11, With them being a very new team we were still unsure where we stood in the thick of things.

That being said and after watching the main teams at spring roll we came to Baltimore with something to prove, from the comments im seeing I guess we succeeded in making a name for ourselves .

Please feel free to check out our site there are a couple promo videos there and we will have the HCH vs MCM up as soon as possible.

Oly vs Magic City

This is Powder, ast captain and event coordinator for MCM. I am currently working on setting up a couple more men’s bouts this year. I have a date for a bout in July in North Carolina, I just need a team to play us. Same for October 7th in our home venue in Jacksonville FL. I am considering travel arrangements for us to face St. Louis and PSDO since they seem like the teams to beat at the moment. So far for the year we have been a team we have had to travel to Dallas twice, Biloxi, St Louis, Indiana, Baltimore and drive an hour to Jacksonville just to practice. With all that being said I don’t see us traveling to the opposite side of the country just for a coed-expo type game and I’m not even sure if a handful of our girls would be able to squeeze that into their schedule anyway since this is their WFTDA apprentice year. Our team is young as well. We had 2 skaters in our game against harm that it was their first game ever and 2 that it was their second game ever.

You can check out our videos @ www.magiccitymisfits.com Unfortunately a copyright issue has been brought to my attention on one of our promos so it will temporarily be down until tomorrow. The bout footage from our game in Maryland is currently being worked on. The rink had a great floor but lighting was bad and we didn’t have people monitoring the cameras so the footage isn’t great but I will still get something up on it.

Merch will be up on the site soon as well ;)

MCM vs Puget Sound Outcast

Guys I honestly don't think NYSE will play you...

But WE provide a stipend for travel to the PNW where you can play us (the Champs) and if you want you can be humbled by Oly Rollers as well, but I wouldn't dare..... We practice with them on Sunday mornings to help us and them get better at this game.

Glad everyone is excited about men's derby and thats very cool. SO MCM do something that others are afraid to do, travel to WA to get down.

;)

Must be nice living where things don't get cost prohibitive too quickly for derby.

Sorry, no $ does not equal no guts.

I'm not speaking for any team, that's just in general.

Ugh....The Champs?

G. No-Evil wrote:

So you guys are consistently referring to yourselves as 'The Champs' now? Ugh, thats kind of gross. The champs of what? The champs of an ad hoc tournament of a scattering of men’s teams, wherein you won by one point on a very controversial ref call during a scoring pass where Saint Louis would have taken the win? A little more modesty would be nice.

- solo

so serious.

Yes, yes we are. gross that is. lol

Like I said I'm glad men's derby is getting some serious attention. Plus we love Harm! Even if only 9 of us were there we all love Harm.

MCM vs NYSE

Now that's what I want to see :)

NY is not that far! (Someone make something happen? :P)

ditto

lynx,
i was thinking that very thing on sunday.
i wonder if there is a venue somewhere between the two where they could meet..... anyone?

Powder mentioned above that

Powder mentioned above that they are looking for an opponent to play in North Carolina in July. That's in between Florida and NYC. Hmmmm...

double ditto.

i will definitely be clearing my schedule to view this bout when it happens!

there's been a lot of talk about "that awesome team of jam skaters from florida" among the dudes of the mass maelstrom, and i'm definitely looking forward to more exciting bouts from the misfits and the rest of the great teams representing men's derby.

Magic City

the spin in the video is seriously the most awesome thing I have ever seen

Away Bouts...

my pocket and bank account both tell me they are about done traveling over 10hrs to play opposing teams in a matter of a month back to back. that and my butt is sore from sitting in car seats that, no matter what automotive experts may say, were not meant for 16+ hour car rides. lol. i'll kindly take donations for some plane tickets though! XD

i'm down to play anyone. meeting new people and sharing experiences with other leagues is what it's all about and helps this sport grow. It's just a matter of the billion dollars it would cost to get out there from Florida and then manage to coincide schedules between myself and the other 3 MCM boys who coach local womans leagues in our areas to make a trip like that. I would love to take on some champs. that sounds like a spectacular idea! who wants to start the donation pool for McM plane tickets to WA? :0)

Congrats to Magic City!

Congrats to Magic City! Consider saving your travel money and build your home league and home audience too. Home-grown is a great place to build your foundation, and I"m sure you could train some great skaters given the skills I've recently heard about. I'm sure an organized (and actually official) men's derby "championship" will come about in no-time and it would be fun!

@ G-no: Other than baseless speculation, you really have no business speaking for NYSE on when/what/why they play. Last time I checked you weren't on the team or in any official communication with our league.

I assume the fine and intelligent readers of DNN must know the difference, but I just wanted to make it clear.

Bluebonnet Plague
mgr. NYSE

baseless speculation

...it was. All in good fun. And I apologize if you took offense that, I am truly sorry.

So maybe the MDC or someone else will put together something that we can all play in. But until another tournament like 2010 Spring Roll (like Dust Devil 2006) it is the closest to thing to a championship the men have had. (THANK YOU SO MUCH FWDG!) So until then YES we are self-proclaiming we are #1.

*so smile* its not like DNN is ranking Men's teams yet. lol

G. No-Evil #13
PSOD

nyse

Just to clarify our bout in NC was originally offered to nyse due to its close proximity to them but due to a scheduling conflict we were not able to move forwards with that , and if I remember correctly I believe nyse contacted us looking for a game so them being scared to play is not the issue

Just wanted to clear that up , I do appreciate the compliment though

Not to end the lovefest for sweaty men on wheels but....

are we getting a Weekend in Review this week or should we just consider this thread it and look forward to a Weekly Rollup on Friday?

It's coming

Sorry for the delay. This was BY FAR the busiest weekend of the year so far for us, with a lot of huge games (Rocky's 3-game PNW swing, the Midwest tournament, Boston / Montreal, Atlanta / KCRW, and also I had to actually get my own ass kicked by Magic City on Sunday.) Most of this week has been dedicated to trying to pull the whole thing together and reconstruct bout recaps from video and textcasts. At the rate I'm going right now, it should probably post around, oh, 4am or so :)

No problem

I know everyone at DNN does their best to keep us up to date on all of the derby happenings. Plus I just wanted to make sure you were still with us after Sunday.

77 bouts!

That was Busta's count, I believe... for Saturday alone! We're gonna have a 100-bout weekend soon.

And I got the tournament crud. Bleh.

better get our next weekend listed..

...Tush said yes to the mic, with PBR of course

Dr.J

Interwebz speed for optimal bout stream?

I currently have 15 mbps interweb speed and this withstands the streaming video real nice on my Macbook pro. If I downgrade to 1.5 mbps interwebz, will I majorly compromise my viewing experience? Opinions, GO!

that'll work

You'll be totally fine. We're typically pushing between 400 and 800 kbps up, sometimes as much as 1 meg or a little more but that's pretty rare.

Now, if you're trying to simultaneously watch more than one stream, that could become a problem... but really, who does that? :)

Multi Monitor FTW!

Hurt Reynolds wrote:

*Raises hand up VERY high*
Because of the quantity of good derby available lately, I have had as many as three games going at once.

Me too

Sometimes it's just too hard to choose!

Dear G. No Evil...

i love your attitude and spunk. your cockiness is enjoyed kind sir! you barely beat Harm City and had they not been missing a few key players i'm willing to bet that score would have looked quite a bit different. Harm City is a strong and fast team that should never be underestimated. then nearly losing to the Gatekeepers based on a controversial call?...self proclaiming a spot at the head of the table given the stats of the previous sentences id say is a bit premature and taking advantage of a bit of luck. However, there is this thing called freedom of speech and i think your a funny dude so please continue for my amusement. I'd like to see some rematch action between you guys and Harm after Sin is all healed up and certainly can't count out the Gatekeepers who deserve a rematch after that call. if you take them both a second time and walk away with clean wins...you'll have my respect and i'll help you trash talk....maybe. lol

Oh my Goodness..

90-53 in a 30 minute bout and Sin was playing and Harm had a full roster but I could be wrong. :/ (47point differential)

110-29 in a 30 minute bout vs Race City (81point differential) Your score? 177-11 was that in a 60 minute bout? Reaching for Triangulation here, lol.

So granted our game vs Gatekeepers was a 1 pt game, but it was a win. And we could all say something about the refs decisions or discredit our victory because of a controversial call, but here is my feeling on that. Refs and the floor conditions are the element of the game, so just play to win, and in the end when the game is called the "W" goes to one team.

And by the way the Gatekeepers are amazing! And Harm is smart and fast, and don't forget DALLAS is dangerous, and NYSE well I can't say anything about them because as it was said before, I don't know anything about them. And from what I seen so far Magic City is a team WE WANT TO PLAY. So until then, we will have to just BS about who is better. And when the stars align maybe NYSE, Magic City, Dallas, Harm, Gatekeepers, TC Terrors, Dirty Dozen, Death Quads, and the many others will get together with US and we will just have to knock it out and see 'who bad'.

And as far as respect you already have mine. You are dominating at a sport that is fucking cool. As many of the skaters (united) on here already do.

SO bring it.... PSOD is waiting. Oh and by the way we had 9 at Spring Roll. Maybe one day we will need our full roster, but we doing pretty good as we are now. #1

;)

#1?

I love that you try to align yourself by association with the #1 womens team in the country and then you take credit for being the #1 mens team in the county after a 1 day 30 min expo round robin, where only 6 mens of the mens teams in the country came out and competed.

This whole thing gives me a new T-Shirt idea

based on the fact of the how many/how few games the genders are playing right now.

The difference between Men's & Women's Derby:
Men talk smack, Women lay smack down.

/gonna get crap from some MCM players this weekend for this

RE: Oh my goodness

" 90-53 in a 30 minute bout and Sin was playing and Harm had a full roster but I could be wrong. :/ (47point differential) " thats a 37 pnt difference brotha. good effort though! which in derby terms is a 2 - 5 jam difference or anywhere between 2 and 10 minutes of game play. due to the nature of how quickly you can get points...thats not much at all. according to our stat sheets from the Harm City bout the majority of our Jams were between 15 and 20 pnts.....wich would be about 2 minutes of game play based on the stats an frankly i take longer pisses than that, and no they didn't not have a few of their key players..so again...not much of a slide there...again...good effort!

" 110-29 in a 30 minute bout vs Race City (81point differential) Your score? 177-11 was that in a 60 minute bout? Reaching for Triangulation here, lol " at least your math is right this time. yes, it was a 60 minute bout, however, we were up 77 - 6 going into the 2nd half. If you watch the bout footage we were securing lead jam and then hanging out at the front of the pack for no reason other than not dueschbagging them at home. no offense to Race City, i love all those guys and had a great time with them during the bout as well as at the after party. they are some of the best personalities i've had the pleasure of meeting. we were trying to show them some courtesy by not being show boats and running up a ridiculously nasty score. i guess some mens leagues are just good people like that? 110-29 in a 30mn period against them...was that trying your best with all 9? ;0)

We keep saying we have 2 dates open...feel free to occupy them at aaaaannnny time. we'll be right here...waiting. :0)

that cocky attitude is awesome on this thread and good fun to read. i keep coming back here to see what else you've posted. lol unfortunately, it will do you no good on the track when you underestimate powerhouse teams like the gatekeepers, harm city, and NYSE taking only 9 players in expecting to dominate. might want to try the Humble approach. You maintain more happy faces and friends that way....just sayin

seriously

would you guys just get a room?

And bring a camera so the

And bring a camera so the fine folks at DNN can sell the video and make money on the Internet!

Awesome!

Ya! My job is done here. Pot-stirred with some baseless speculation, pointless stats, misinterpetations, some buttons pushed, and created some drama. All in good fun.

And best of all I even got the "get a room" from Hurt!

Actually when we meet, you will understand better. I just love having fun wasting my work day here. DNN Rocks. AND YES WOMEN in Roller Derby do lay the smack down. Hardest hits I have ever received were from badass women, and I'm 6'2 265. So yes they continue to rule this sport. And Sunday morning I have to take some more beating from Sassy/Tannah/Deadly Aim.

ok back to my humble place serving our country in the US Navy (1 more year until retirement!) and building skates on my off-time. ;)
